4 What is Metadata? Definition: - Data about data or Information about information Metadata is structured information that describes, explains, locates or makes it easier to retrieve, use or manage an information resource...a better definition: - Structured information about any kind of resource, which is used to identify, describe, manage or give access to that resource. 3 main types of Metadata: descriptive, structural and administrative (rights and preservation). Metadata can describe resources at any level of aggregation: a collection, a single resource, a component of a larger resource Metadata is key to ensuring that resources will survive and continue to be accessible into the future

5 What does Metadata do? Metadata help to: -Facilitate discovery of relevant information -Organize resources -Facilitate interoperability and integration -Provide digital identification -Support archiving and preservation Metadata describe: -WHO -WHAT -WHERE -WHY -HOW A medium for the communication of knowledge and for data interpretation

6 Structuring the data Importance of metadata to structure information for: - Access -Retrieval -Long term preservation Necessity of : -Ontologies (represent knowledge as a set of concepts within a domain and the relationships between those concepts) -Metadata schemas (sets of metadata elements designed for a specific purpose, such as describing a particular type of information resource)

9 A knowledge communication framework Necessity of a framework: - to overcome any problems of data inconsistency; - to trace the information about the pipeline for creation of the digital resource from the acquisition to publication; - to provide a detailed description of all the intermediate passages; - importance of the meta-messages

24 Creating the CARARE Schema Rich schema for archaeology & architecture Reviewed standards and schemas already in use MIDAS Heritage, the Core Data Index, LIDO, POLIS DTD and CIDOC CRM. 29 CARARE content in Europeana February first data items appeared >800,000 records from the SwNHB The complete dataset has been uploaded and covers objects such as rune stones, tombs, dwellings to archaeological sites. The records that appear in Europeana are in text format and contain information about each monument with a link to the original content held in the SwNHB databases

34 Linked Heritage The project: months (April September 2013) - 20 Countries and hundreds of collections Aims: - To contribute with new content to Europeana (both public and private sector); - To enhance the quality content in terms of metadata richness, re-use and uniqueness; - To enable improved search, retrieval and use of Europeana content; Facing issues: - Non standard descriptive terminologies - Lack of private sector and 20th century content - Preservation of complex metadata models within Europeana metadata schema 11 May, Nicosia
