About IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases provides the following: v Eliminates the need for multiple disparate products from multiple vendors to manage your database environment. v Monitors critical components of your database environment using pre-configured resource models with built-in intelligence for problem identification, notification and correction and allows custom resource model creation and modification to support your changing business needs v Allows custom resource model creation and modification to pre-configured resource models to support your changing business needs. v Integrates with other IBM products for real-time and historical reporting, event correlation, and business impact analysis. Eliminates the need for multiple disparate monitoring products With the increase in enterprise-strategic applications and e-business systems, database resources have also spread geographically across many locations. The task of managing multiple database server types has become increasingly complex. The IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product addresses this concern by providing monitoring features for multiple types of database servers in one product. The value to you is the need for only one product that provides consistent, routine monitoring and that frees up your database administrators to focus on more complex, less repetitive types of tasks. The value to your business is cost-effective IT management, through the use of smart tools. 1

8 Monitors critical components of the database environment using intelligent resource models When monitoring database resources, there are many areas to consider, such as storage, performance, health checks and tuning, and status and availability. Any one, or any combination of these metrics can affect database system performance. For this reason, you need a systems management tool that puts you in control of what is monitored, when that monitoring occurs, and what should be done with the monitoring results. The IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product includes resource models that are made up of multiple metrics that monitor and report system health based on pre-defined settings (thresholds and monitoring intervals). The pre-configuration of the resource model metric settings provide quick time to value. The ability to change these metrics or to create custom resource models provides flexibility to support changing business needs and conditions. Integration with other IBM products The IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product allows you to leverage your investments, both old and new, to build an end-to-end management solution. Through the use of the IBM Tivoli Monitoring product as its monitoring engine, the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product integrates with a common graphical user interface for real-time status reporting, a centralized data warehouse for historical reporting, and a common event management system for multi-resource problem correlation and reporting. Additionally, the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product integrates with business analysis products that allow you to assess your compliance with service level agreements and the impact of down or compromised resources across your entire enterprise. The primary objective of the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product is to provide routine, consistent monitoring and to anticipate and correct problems before database performance and customer confidence is degraded. Through the implementation of the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases, database administrators can expect to be alerted when key performance and resource allocation problems are detected and customers can expect to maximize their return on investment through increased efficiency of their information technology staff, improved compliance to service-level objectives, and reduced cost of database system administration and deployment. The IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product provides smart tools that put you in control of your environment. Allows co-existence with classic monitoring products The monitoring collections for IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: DB2 and IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Oracle can co-exist with the monitoring collections for the Tivoli Manager for DB2 and the Tivoli Manager for Oracle products. This allows dual support of both old and new database versions until your environment is completely upgraded to the latest version of the database software. Allows automated monitoring of business application software The IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Oracle allows you to customize certain resource models to monitor SAP and PeopleSoft application tables or specific tables or users that you define. 9 System requirements represent tables or users) to search for the appropriate PeopleSoft and SAP tables. The IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: DB2 provides similar monitoring of SAP application tables. Allows automation of repetitive tasks IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: DB2 and IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Oracle allow you to automate repetitive database administration tasks. All you have to do is define the simple tasks once, then perform them on multiple databases and instances in a single action. Some of the tasks you can automate are: v Ensure space availability on log and data devices. v Run standard maintenance commands and check for corruption. v Check database and configuration settings. v Start and stop the IBM Replication Capture and Apply programs. v Provide general statistics about database objects. v Keep up-to-date recovery information. v Back up databases and log files. Provides out-of-box reports for rapid time to value With just 24 hours of data, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: DB2, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Informix, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Oracle provide out-of-box reports (from the Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse) for key metrics to get you up and running and to demonstrate immediate value: v v v IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: DB2 Percent Buffer Pool Hit Ratio, Number of Applications Currently Connected, Percent Connections Used, Percent Used in Primary Log, and Deadlocks Delta IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Informix Informix Health Check, Informix Thread Activity, Informix Disk Utilization, and Informix Logical Log IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Microsoft SQL Server Database Space Used (FileGroup level), Database Average Percentage Used, Microsoft SQL Server Availability, Replication Agent Delivery latency, Microsoft SQL Server CPU Percentage Used, and Microsoft SQL Server Error Message Count. v IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Oracle BufferCache Hit Ratio, Tablespace Usage, Deadlocks, Oracle RDBMS Availability, and Dispatcher Contention Allows selective logging to Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: DB2 and IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases: Oracle allow you to select the key metrics of interest within a given resource model and to control which of these metrics are logged to the common data warehouse.
