A ROADMAP TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF DATA The right combination of data, data solutions, and infrastructure can maximize the value of business data today and in the future.
As recently as a few years ago, companies didn t see data as a valuable part of business strategy. Companies were ignoring the monetary value of data. But 30 percent of Fortune 500 companies are predicted to no longer exist in 30 years. Why? Because they won t have successfully transformed for the digital economy or have even tried. 1 As a result, more and more companies are beginning to recognize the value of data. 2 Today, the majority of British businesses believe that the data their companies hold is more valuable than the people they employ. 3 In 2006, oil and energy companies topped the list of the six most valuable firms in the world. In 2016, that list was dominated by data firms such as Alphabet (the parent company of Google), Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft. 4 THE VALUE OF CUSTOMER DATA In 2016, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn and recognized the value of LinkedIn s customer data. With 100 million active LinkedIn users each month at the time, Microsoft paid $26.2 billion for the company essentially $260 for each active customer s monthly data. 5 When Caesars Entertainment Corporation filed for bankruptcy, creditors valued its customer loyalty program data at $1 billion. 6 The US banking industry is mining customer data as a revenue source. Banks allow retailers to advertise targeted discounts to customers through online bank statements and opt-in text messages and s. 7 THE VALUE OF MAKING DECISIONS WITH DATA Companies such as Google, Amazon, and Netflix don t just value data, they use it to drive and improve their businesses. In other words, they ve already digitally transformed. The recommendations made to shoppers on Amazon and subscribers on Netflix are based on data-driven decisions. Google uses data mined from internal employee surveys to assess management and create programs that enable managers to be better assets to their teams. In a BARC Business Application Research Center survey, two-thirds of respondents planned to use information to identify new business opportunities in the future. 7 The survey also found that more best-in-class companies are already basing most of their businesses decisions on information and not intuition. If your company is ready to increase the value of data and the value of your company a systematic, three-pronged approach can make the journey smoother and more effective. The approach can start with the data you already have and add technologies and additional data to move your journey forward. A ROADMAP TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF DATA 1
THE JOURNEY TO INCREASE DATA S VALUE Leg One The journey to increase data s value starts with traditional operational data, often stored in relational Oracle databases. Operational data is structured data about the workforce, direct competitors, creditors, suppliers, and customers. It can be used to uncover information or to process transactions. Operational Modern Data Warehousing Advanced Analytics ` An example of the value of structured operational data is the poster-child for digital transformation, Uber. Uber s success results from the small, right data [structured operational data] it needed to do something very simple dispatch cars. 9 Data Pipelines All organizations have operational data, and most are using it today. The key to increasing the value of operational data is to augment it with added data for deeper analysis and more effective, transformative use. Leg Two Next in the journey is adding modern data warehousing to integrate current and historical data from multiple other sources. Modern data warehousing uses object storage, table storage, computation and processing, and programming languages in a process that consolidates large volumes of data from multiple sources, including operational data, for analysis. Traditional data warehousing involved a data repository where data was consolidated from multiple sources and usually stored on hard-disk drives. IT staff typically queried that data in batches. In a modern data warehouse, there are more data types, more data sources, and higher data volumes. Data is queried in-memory in real time by business users, and it is used to create business intelligence (BI) that managers and executives can analyze, create reports on, and use to improve results. Query results are applied to the decision-making process to improve the customer experience, create disruptive applications or services, and more. An example of adding BI with a modern data warehouse would be a ride-share provider not just dispatching cars, but discovering that 60 percent of riders in a given geography pay with cash between 10 p.m. and midnight. Decision makers could then advise drivers to keep larger cash pools on-hand from 10 to midnight to accommodate making change for passengers who pay with cash. Leg Three The next and final step in the journey to increase data value is performing advanced analytics on the data in your modern data warehouse and potentially from other sources as well. Advanced analytics runs predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning algorithms on the data in your modern data warehouse to forecast future trends and patterns. An example might be a ride-share provider using predictive analytics to analyze customer payment patterns across all drivers, routes, times, and local events in a given geography to forecast the amount of change drivers might want to have on hand for any given shift at any time. Journey-Wide Data pipelines support every leg of the journey. Pipelines clean, transform, merge, and model the data that runs through the data ecosystem. The right infrastructure, tools, and technologies also support and fuel the journey. They support data and users and enable a business to maximize the value of data, efficiently modernize the data warehouse, implement advanced analytics, and optimize the flow of data in data pipelines. A ROADMAP TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF DATA 2
SUPPORT FOR THE OPERATIONAL-DATA LEG OF THE DATA JOURNEY The applications that cull and store operational data have to perform quickly and reliably. Ideally, they need to support data being consolidated in a single data store and to keep data secure regardless of where it resides. In a survey on application performance management, Gleanster found that 88 percent of respondents say the database is their most common challenge or issue with application performance. 10 Slow performance can equal lost time, money, and opportunity. Databases consolidated into a single data store and on less infrastructure result in data that is faster to query and easier and less costly to manage and protect. The Pure Data-Centric Architecture for Operational Data The Pure Data-Centric Architecture uses all-flash technology. For data including operational data in Oracle solutions, the architecture supports high performance, consolidation, and protection. The Pure Data-Centric Architecture offers fast performance with little or no tuning, sub-millisecond latency, and high bandwidth. A 512-byte variable internal block size enables Pure Storage flash arrays to process input/outputs (I/Os) from 4 K to 32 K as one I/O. Comparatively, fixed-block architectures divide and process blocks separately into multiple 4 K or 8 K units. Because of variable block sizes, the time to complete physical I/O for online transaction processing (OLTP) workloads in databases running on the Pure Storage architecture THE PURE DATA-CENTRIC ARCHITECTURE The Pure Data-Centric Architecture can consolidate databases, virtual machines, analytics, or web-scale applications. It includes: The FlashArray//X solution for block and virtual volumes The Pure Storage FlashBlade array for files and objects The Pure Storage FlashStack solution with Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS ) and FlashArray solutions in a single, converged infrastructure for computing, networking, and storage Purity with a full complement of software-defined data services Support for the Pure1 platform with cloud-based monitoring and predictive analytics The Evergreen Storage model to enable deploying once and upgrading and expanding as needed for a decade or more is consistently in the 100s of microseconds. 11 The Pure Data-Centric Architecture makes it easy and efficient to consolidate Oracle databases, different workloads, and hardware, which helps improve resource utilization and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO). Five data reduction technologies and multiple compression algorithms can reduce data up to 5:1. 11 And up to 3 PBs of effective capacity in 6 RU in the Pure Storage FlashArray solution results in a smaller footprint. That smaller footprint contributes to lower power, cooling, management, and space costs. To help ensure data is protected without impacting performance, the architecture uses dual parity and supports always-on encryption, including for data at rest. Rapid Data Locking (RDL) enables the array to be locked immediately via array-wide encryption and a hardware smart card. Multiple account types, directory-based authentication, and secure management connectivity also help ensure more secure administration. A ROADMAP TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF DATA 3
The architecture ensures data is not only protected, but available. The Pure Storage FlashArray//X solution delivers percent six-nines availability, so data is available and protected, and with no loss in performance. 12 When a database needs backing up, doing so using the Pure Data-Centric Architecture is 5 to 10 times faster than with other all-flash solutions. 13 And the architecture uses a clustered controller design, mirrored NV-RAM, hotswappable components, and a stateless controller architecture to ensure that capacity can be expanded, controllers upgraded, software upgraded, and hardware replaced without impacting availability or performance. The Pure Storage FlashArray family and the Pure Storage FlashStack solution enable you to run: Oracle Database Enterprise or Standard Edition Oracle MySQL Database Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) Oracle E-Business Suite Oracle PeopleSoft Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne The Oracle Enterprise Manager plug-in provides a single-pane dashboard for the Pure Storage FlashArray solution to make it easy to manage Oracle solutions % AVAILABILITY FOR FLASHARRAY PRODUCTS 12 The Pure Storage FlashArray//X solution offers the highest performance for enterprise applications, provides all-flash for any need, and is part of the Pure Storage FlashStack solution. The Pure Data-Centric Architecture also provides RAID-HA protection against failures. RAID-HA is an adaptive form of RAID developed for flash. It provides a minimum of dual parity protection and it self-heals when a solid-state drive (SSD) has failed or is removed. RAID-HA automatically increases the parity protection on highly reduced data sets. Added benefits of using the Pure Data-Centric Architecture for your data journey include: The ability to use Pure Storage compression instead of Oracle compression to achieve the same results without Oracle licensing costs or the time needed for configuration The Evergreen Storage model, which lets you deploy your Pure Storage solution once and upgrade when you need to for a decade or more while having continuous access to the latest storage infrastructure without added costs A ROADMAP TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF DATA 4
SUPPORT FOR THE MODERN-DATA-WAREHOUSE LEG OF THE DATA JOURNEY A modern-data-warehouse solution needs to be flexible and offer real-time responsiveness. It has to be able to handle large volumes of data in-memory. It also needs to run on an architecture that can scale to handle increasing demands and data volumes, to be upgraded without significant overhead, and to evolve to meet new requirements. In its 2017 State of Data Insights Report, Interana found that almost one-third of respondents reported slow query speeds as their top pain point with their existing analytics solution. 14 Almost two-thirds of respondents said it took at least a full day, and sometimes as many at 30 days, to get results from a query. Lost days equal lost time, money, and opportunity. The Pure Data-Centric Architecture for the Modern Data Warehouse The Pure Data-Centric Architecture is an optimal solution for modern Oracle data warehousing needs. It enables managing all types of data structured, semi-structured, and unstructured. It also ingests data faster than traditional disk storage, so data is accessible to users more quickly. It supports running large numbers of complex queries across large data sets, including sets composed of block, file, and object data. It enables data accessibility in real-time even during upgrades and backups. And with native 100-percent NVM Express (NVMe ) all-flash performance, there s no need for data to be cached or tiered. The architecture, fully outfitted with the Pure Storage FlashArray//X solution, the FlashBlade solution, the FlashStack solution, Purity, and the Pure1 platform, offers PBs of capacity and ingests terabytes of data per hour. The Pure Storage architecture enables managing, allocating, and scaling compute and storage (with added shelves, controllers, or blades) independently. Create a shared attached storage (SAS) architecture when you combine petabytes of storage in a 5 x 4U FlashBlade multichassis configuration with up to 3 PBs in 6 RU with a FlashArray//X solution. The resulting SAS provides ample capacity for large data volumes and to consolidate data staging, a modern data warehouse, and data marts. And FlashArray//X solutions provide optimal support for the enterprise applications that interact with your modern data warehouse. The same availability, always-on performance, sub-millisecond latency, backup and recovery capabilities, and data reduction and protection that benefit the operational-data leg of your journey also benefit the modern-data-warehouse leg of your journey. The Pure Storage FlashArray family, the Pure Storage FlashStack solution, and the Pure Storage FlashBlade solution support running: Oracle Database Enterprise or Standard Edition Oracle RAC Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition Up to 3 PB in one 6U FlashArray//X solution with an external DirectFlash Shelf Oracle Business Intelligence Applications Pure Storage FlashArray//X and FlashBlade solutions combine to offer a high performance performance shared attached storage (SAS) architecture for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. A ROADMAP TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF DATA 5
SUPPORT FOR THE ADVANCED-ANALYTICS LEG OF THE DATA JOURNEY Advanced analytics encompasses the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning against the data in your modern data warehouse to automate forecasting future trends and behavior patterns. Of the businesses estimated to be digitally disrupted, an increasing amount of that disruption will come from the use of advanced analytics and machine learning. Like a modern data warehouse, advanced analytics and machine learning require the ability to efficiently manage large volumes of data and different types of data not just the large volumes that might already be in your modern data warehouse, but even higher volumes if you add additional sources of data, such as from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors or public web sites. That data requires delivery to parallel processors with multi-core CPUs and GPUs at high speeds to enable the fast, accurate machine learning and analytic algorithms required for advanced analytics. With all that data, advanced analytics also requires minimizing the time needed for data discovery and data modeling, so business users can continue to access data in real time. PBs of data and billions of objects and files The Pure Data-Centric Architecture offers a powerful, large-scale data processing environment. It provides high bandwidth to meet the massively parallel architecture needs of multi-core CPUs. It also meets the intense I/O demands of analytical processing with: Fast performance 75 GB/s read, 25 GB/s write Huge capacity PBs in a single namespace Billions of files and objects Native Server Message Block (SMB) and HTTP support The FlashBlade solution further accelerates large-block and small-block I/O and makes both user I/O and metadata operations fast. The same ability to manage all types of data, always-on performance, sub-millisecond latency, backup and recovery capabilities, and data reduction and protection that benefit the operational-data and modern-data-warehouse legs of your journey also benefit the advanced-analytics leg of your journey. 12 With the high density and capacity of the Pure Data-Centric Architecture, your data ecosystem can rapidly ingest new data and model it, so advanced analytics can happen at the speed your business needs to out-disrupt your competitors. Up to 17 GB/s of bandwidth per chassis 15 The Pure Storage FlashArray family, the Pure Storage FlashStack solution, and the Pure Storage FlashBlade solution can handle the extreme data volumes needed for advanced analytics using: Oracle Database Enterprise Edition Oracle RAC The Pure Data-Centric Architecture for Advanced Analytics The Pure Data-Centric Architecture offers the support needed for Oracle advanced analytics solutions. The FlashBlade component offers a highly parallel architecture that includes software and flash technology. It also offers elastic scalability for data growth and up to 17 GB/s performance per chassis. 15 Elastic concurrency supports up to tens of thousands of clients regardless of the size of data or the number of concurrent workloads. 15 And a built-in 40 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) fabric delivers network bandwidth of 320 gigabits per chassis. It independently scales out storage, performance, and capacity petabytes in a 5 x 4U FlashBlade multichassis configuration to support billions of files and objects for current and future data volumes and advanced analytics needs. Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition Oracle Advanced Analytics Oracle Data Miner Oracle Complex Event Processing (CEP) Oracle NoSQL Database The Pure Storage FlashBlade solution was engineered for modern data-analytics workloads. A ROADMAP TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF DATA 6
SUPPORT FOR DATA PIPELINES Data pipelines are the data processing engines that clean, transform, merge, and model the data that runs under every step of your data journey and throughout your data ecosystem. To be effective, data pipelines require reproducible workflows, a design that maintains high data quality, and the ability to automate or reduce the time required for data scientists to complete mundane data-preparation processes. Data pipelines require the same high performance and low latency needed for all the legs of your data journey along with the ability to scale as your data ecosystem scales. The Pure Data-Centric Architecture for Data Pipelines The Pure Data-Centric Architecture FlashArray//X implementation provides optimal support for real-time data pipelines. It enables running batch (historical) or real-time (stream) data pipelines, or both concurrently. The FlashBlade solution is built for modern analytics and provides a data pipeline for file, object, structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data that fuels your online analytical processing (OLAP) and modern analytics initiatives. Just one 4U FlashBlade solution can replace 20 racks of hard-disk drives and handle PBs of data and billions of objects and files. And compression that s always on optimizes space usage without sacrificing performance. 19 The Pure Storage FlashArray family, the Pure Storage FlashStack solution, and the Pure Storage FlashBlade solution empower data pipelines using: Oracle GoldenGate Oracle Data Integrator Enterprise Edition Oracle Database Enterprise Edition Oracle Data Integrator for Big Data Oracle RAC Oracle Enterprise Data Quality Oracle Stream Analytics Oracle Big Data Connectors The Pure Storage FlashArray//X family provides optimal support for real-time data pipelines. Operational Data Modern Data Warehousing Advanced Analytics FlashStack The Pure Data-Centric Architecture offers the same data services across all components to ensure data content and access is coherent and reliable even across mixed data types. With all data types on a single architecture, data movement and its high cost are reduced. A single architecture for data wrangling and exploratory data analysis (EDA) reduces complexity. And the ability to scale compute and capacity separately helps accommodate larger data sets and speed up the data wrangling process. FlashArray//X FlashBlade The same parallel architecture, the Pure Storage DirectFlash technology, six-nines availability for FlashArray solutions, always-on performance, sub-millisecond latency, backup and recovery capabilities, and data reduction and protection that benefit every leg of your journey also benefit data pipelines. 12 FlashArray//X Data Pipelines FIGURE 1.
