Executive Summary The intended audience for this document are those who have Oracle database experience as a DBA, EnterpriseOne CNC administrators, and performance specialists. Oracle In-Memory column store was introduced with the Oracle Database version The In-Memory feature allows dual-format architectures of row and column store. The column store allows analytical processes and OLTP transactional processes to benefit when the Oracle optimizer determines that one or the other can provide better performance. For complete details about Oracle Database In-Memory, see: Oracle Database In-Memory White Paper For a description of the use of the Oracle column store with its application in EnterpriseOne, see: Oracle Database In-Memory with Oracle s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne The intent of this document is to discuss the Oracle Database In-Memory Advisor. This advisor removes the manual steps involved in the approach followed by the Oracle Database In-Memory White Paper referenced above with EnterpriseOne and provides a tool that analyzes the Oracle database workload and makes specific recommendations regarding tables that might benefit in performance gains if placed in the Oracle column store. 1 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE

Installing the IM Advisor The Oracle Database In-Memory (IM) Advisor will need to be installed and then configured. The steps for installing the IM Advisor are: 1) Create a directory for the IM Advisor (i.e. IM_Advisor) 2) Copy the imadvisor.zip file that can be downloaded from here. 3) Unzip the imadvisor.zip file as shown below: 4) Run the appropriate setup by initiating the SQL script instimadv.sql and other steps specified in the IM Advisor documentation available here. 5) You will have to set an Oracle directory name IMADVISOR_DIRECTORY. The command to set the directory name is: SQL> create or replace directory IMADVISOR_DIRECTORY as /home/oracle/imadvisor_results ; The directory /home/oracle/imadvisor_results should already exist. Otherwise, the IM Advisor query will fail. The directory name is where the results of the report will reside and is used in the IM Advisor script below that will be used to generate the recommended SQL to place selected tables in the In-Memory column store. 2 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE

Configuring/Running the IM Advisor for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne There are a number of steps involved in the configuration of the IM Advisor, namely: 1. Turning ON the In-Memory feature to use the column store. 2. Making sure that there are NO tables in the column store that would fit the criteria of the IM Advisor. The IM Advisor will ignore any recommendations if the table currently resides in the column store. Removing all tables in the current column store validates that the table in the recommended list is still required in the processes tested. 3. Initiating an AWR report event, generating an initial starting SNAP_ID. 4. Generating the load to the EnterpriseOne application. 5. Initiating a final AWR report event, generating an ending SNAP_ID. 6. Executing the run_advisor script as the Oracle IMDB user (see user setup in documentation) provided, possibly modifying any of the seven IM Advisor parameters. The IM Advisor configured parameters are discussed in the documentation below and each parameter is included in the script. STEP 1: Turning ON the In-Memory column store. Enabling the column store is a combination of the configuration and a select number of simple SQL commands. Below is a listing of the configuration of the necessary In-Memory Oracle parameters that were used in the testing and creation of this document. Refer to In- Memory documentation on Oracle Support for more information. SQL> show parameter inmemory NAME TYPE VALUE - inmemory_clause_default string inmemory_force string DEFAULT inmemory_max_populate_servers integer 16 inmemory_query string ENABLE inmemory_size big integer 64G inmemory_trickle_repopulate_servers_ integer 1 percent optimizer_inmemory_aware boolean TRUE The commands to ensure that the In-Memory feature is on are inmemory_query and optimizer_inmemory_aware as shown above. The commands used to set these values are illustrated below. To avoid having to insert and delete tables used by the Oracle optimizer for the column store, tables can simply remain in the column store, and these two Oracle configuration parameters set to DISABLE and FALSE respectively tells the Oracle optimizer to ignore the column store. set echo on; set timing on; alter system set inmemory_query=enable scope=both; alter system set optimizer_inmemory_aware=true scope=both; exit; / 3 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE

As we will see, to be sure the IM Advisor does not consider the column store, removing all tables in the column store is advised. STEP 2: Make sure there are NO tables in the In-Memory column store. As a precaution for using the IM Advisor, it is recommended that NO tables exist in the column store. Below is a simple command used to look at the In-Memory column store tables and their compression ratio value. It can also be used to validate that NO tables exist in the column store. View memory usage in database by in memory table with compression ratio: Script to determine the Oracle 12c In-Memory Compression Ratio column owner format a10 trunc; column segment_name format a30 trunc; set linesize 125; set pagesize 999; SELECT owner, segment_name,inst_id, populate_status, round(inmemory_size/1024/1024/1024,4) as im_gb, round(bytes/1024/1024/1024,4) as disk_gb, round(bytes_not_populated/1024/1024/1024,4) as gb_not_populated, round(bytes/inmemory_size, 4) as compression_ratio FROM gv$im_segments order by inst_id, owner, segment_name, populate_status; The result of the above query when using the IM Advisor should be no rows selected. STEP 3: Initiate an AWR capture event, create a START SNAP_ID. An AWR capture event can be initiated through the command line, Oracle Enterprise Manager, or through the use of the LFRAME Oracle utility. This is a common Oracle database administration task. How to initiate this task will not be discussed in this document. The START SNAP_ID will be used in the IM Advisor script later in the document as an input parameter. STEP 4: Generate EnterpriseOne application Traffic. At this point, the AWR snapshot has been taken and the In-Memory database setup steps have been completed. This current step is important because it is the type of EnterpriseOne traffic that is needed for the IM Advisor to make recommendations. There does not need to be a large amount of work. Testing has shown that the IM Advisor has reported recommendations on as little as a few repeated SQL commands. There are two approaches here that were considered: 1. Unit testing - Single EnterpriseOne applications such as P42101 (Sales Order Entry) were tested. Ten iterations of the same application were used in the testing. 2. Load Testing and Period Testing - Normal user load testing and normal day in the life (DIL) testing were not performed with the IM Advisor in this testing but would be recommended to see if the IM Advisor was useful in performance improvements with its recommendations. This testing was beyond the scope of this document, but is suggested as a further work project. 4 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE

STEP 5: Initiate another AWR capture event, create an END SNAP_ID. An AWR capture event can be initiated through the command line, Oracle Enterprise Manager, or through the use of the LFRAME Oracle utility. This is a common Oracle database administration task and will not be discussed in this document. The END SNAP_ID along with the START SNAP_ID will be used in the IM Advisor script later in this document as an input parameter. STEP 6: Initiate the below run_advisor.sql script. The script listed below, which I call run_advisor.sql, can be edited or modified to change the IM Advisor configuration settings AND to configure the start_snap_id and end_snap_id parameters that were set by running the AWR capture events. The line in the script below has been bolded to show where the substitution of start and end snap_id should be made. The bolded IMADVISOR_DIRECTORY part of the script was defined during the IM Advisor installation section of this document. The run_advisor script is here: set echo on; set timing on; DECLARE v_task_name VARCHAR2(4000) := 'IMADVISOR'; v_directory_name VARCHAR2(4000) := 'IMADVISOR_DIRECTORY'; return_code VARCHAR2(4000); BEGIN DBMS_OUTPUT.ENABLE (buffer_size => NULL); BEGIN Remove task if it exists, else do nothing during test DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.DROP_TASK( task_name => 'IMADVISOR', force=>true); COMMIT; Alternative forced drop the corresponding row in table IMADVISOR_TASKS EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL; END; DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.CREATE_TASK( task_name => v_task_name); DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line('IMADVISOR: Task ' v_task_name ' created'); 5 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE

DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.ADD_STATISTICS( v_task_name ); DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.ADD_STATISTICS( v_task_name, capture_window_start => SYSTIMESTAMP-7200, capture_window_end => SYSTIMESTAMP); Default for READ_BENEFIT_FACTOR is 10.0 DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.SET_PARAMETER ('READ_BENEFIT_FACTOR', 1.0, v_task_name); Default for WRITE_DISADVANTAGE_FACTOR is 0.9 DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.SET_PARAMETER ('WRITE_DISADVANTAGE_FACTOR', 0.9, v_task_name); Default for CPU_BENEFIT_FACTOR is 2.0 DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.SET_PARAMETER ('CPU_BENEFIT_FACTOR', 2.0, v_task_name); Default for MIN_OVERALL_BENEFIT_FACTOR is 1.05 DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.SET_PARAMETER ('MIN_OVERALL_BENEFIT_FACTOR', 1.05, v_task_name); Default for MIN_INMEMORY_OBJECT_SIZE is DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.SET_PARAMETER ('MIN_INMEMORY_OBJECT_SIZE', 1024, v_task_name); Default for FAVOR_HIGH_COMPRESSION is 0 DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.SET_PARAMETER ('FAVOR_HIGH_COMPRESSION', 0, v_task_name); Default for LOB_BENEFIT_REDUCTION is 1 DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.SET_PARAMETER ('LOB_BENEFIT_REDUCTION', 1, v_task_name); DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.ADD_STATISTICS( v_task_name); DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.ADD_HIST_STATISTICS( v_task_name, start_snap_id => 7240, end_snap_id => 7259); DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line('IMADVISOR: Finished Adding Statistics for task ' v_task_name); DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.EXECUTE_TASK(v_task_name); DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line('IMADVISOR: Finished Executing task ' v_task_name); DBMS_INMEMORY_ADVISOR.GENERATE_RECOMMENDATIONS (task_name => v_task_name, directory_name => v_directory_name, inmemory_size => NULL); DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line('IMADVISOR: Finished Generating Recommendations for task ' v_task_name); EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN return_code := ABS(SQLCODE); dbms_output.put_line(sqlerrm); dbms_output.put_line(dbms_utility.format_error_backtrace); RAISE; END; 6 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE

Evaluating the Results of IM Advisor The script run_advisor will produce a file imadvisor_imadvisor. Below is the result when P42101 (Sales Order Entry) was run and a query was made to the Unit Price. This was a use case in the original IMDB characterization in which manual steps had to be taken to determine the tables that were most likely needed by the Oracle optimizer for better performance. In the above example, the SQL query for P42101 accessed tables F4211 (Sales Detail) and F42119 (Sales History) and the total runtime of the process was 325 seconds. Once the In-Memory tables recommended were placed in the column store, the same process using P42101 achieved the same result in of a second. In the manual testing, the identified tables for the column store and the ones identified by the IM Advisor were identical. IM Advisor is a low overhead tool that has been shown to accurately predict the tables that could be placed in the In-Memory column store to improve performance of the EnterpriseOne application. 7 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE

Further Discussion of the IM Advisor The default parameters for configuring the IM Advisor are listed in the run_advisor.sql script. They are covered at length in the IM Advisor documentation. Only the 'MIN_OVERALL_BENEFIT_FACTOR' was changed for the purpose of this testing to always yield a positive result and avoid any immediate failures of the script. The positive entries in the file imadvisor_imadvisor file was achieved by having the IM Advisor report on and evaluate almost the entire SQL in the AWR report set. Without this change, the script failed and the error message did not give a clear indication as to what the problem was, only that the resulting set was not large enough to be evaluated by the IM Advisor. This document is not intended for troubleshooting issues that you might encounter with the IM Advisor, but instead show that a positive result set was achieved that matched a manual use case used during testing to achieve the same results. 8 USING ORACLE IN-MEMORY ADVISOR WITH JD EDWARDS ENTERPRISEONE
