9 Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) What is SPARC? MSU is a founding member of this international alliance of academic and research libraries Promotes changes to infrastructure and culture to make "open" the default mode in scholarly communication Research Data Sharing Policy Initiative The aim of the project is to contribute productively to the process of shaping emerging funder policies and practices for sharing research data that are academy-friendly and promote the fullest possible accessibility and utility of research data.

10 Open Data for Publications Joint Data Archiving Policy (JDAP) Sample text: [Journal] requires, as a condition for publication, that data supporting the results in the paper should be archived in an appropriate public archive, such as [list of approved archives here]. Data are important products of the scientific enterprise, and they should be preserved and usable for decades in the future. 14 Data Management Plans (DMPs) A formal document that outlines a researcher s practices for collecting, organizing, archiving and sharing the data produced as part of a research project. Different funding agencies have different specifications for what information must be included in a DMP.

15 Main Components of a DMP 1. Description of data 2. Metadata standards 3. Discussion of security and ethics 4. Plans for access, sharing, and reuse 5. Long-term management and preservation 6. Budget considerations

16 1. Description of Data What type of data will be produced? How will data be collected? In what formats? Will you use pre-existing data? From where? What is your storage and backup strategy?

17 2. Metadata standards Metadata is language that describes your data What standards will be used for documentation and metadata? What project and data identifiers will be assigned? Is there a community standard for metadata integration?

18 3. Discussion of security and ethics What steps will be taken to protect privacy? Who will have access to the data, and at what stage of the project? Who owns the rights to the data created?

19 4. Plans for access, sharing, and re-use At what stage will the data be shared? Are there obligations from funders, institutions, or journal publishers to share all or part of the data? Who will be able to access the data? Where will the data be shared?

20 5. Long-term management and preservation How will the data be archived for preservation and longterm access? How long should it be retained? Where will it be retained? Who will maintain my data for the long-term?

21 6. Budget Considerations What hardware is needed? What software is needed? How will data management be funded?
