1 AppleWorks 6.1: What s New AppleWorks still has word processing, database, and spreadsheet, but there are some changes in each one. A new presentation module takes the place of the old slide show feature and there is a whole new library of clip art. The use of the web for graphics and templates is built into this new AppleWorks. Starting Points When AppleWorks starts up you will see the Starting Points palette. Select the part of AppleWorks you wish to use. The Basic Tab lists the components of AppleWorks for you to choose. Use the Assistants tab to find step by step assistants to help you create calendars, certificates, envelopes, and more. Use the Templates Tab to find many templates for common projects like presentations, letterheads, and posters. Simply modify the already created documents. The Web tab links you directly to the AppleWorks Web page for Extras, AppleWorks Newsletter, and many more Templates. Select templates for school projects, or for kids. You can go back to the starting Points from the button bar any time. or from the File Menu at Button Bar Use the button bar for frequently used tasks. Starting points Bold Italics Underline Spell Show/Hide Check Invisibles Spreadsheet Drawing Presentation Justification buttons Text color Promote tab Demote tab Word Processing Database Painting Speak Text To add buttons, go to the Edit Menu and select Preferences> button bar. Double click on items to add them to the button bar. To delete buttons, drag the unwanted ones to the trash. You can return them later if you wish from the Preferences Menu. 2 Toolbar The toolbar has all the same items, but they look a bit different than in AppleWorks 5. Text tool Spreadsheet Note that the polygon tool is set for triangles, but can be changed to draw all regular polygons. If you want to change the number of sides, go to the Edit Menu > Polygon sides. The paint tools are available for use only when you are in paint mode. If they are grayed out, then they are not available. To use the paint tools, click on the Painting button. Your cursor will turn into a paintbrush. Drag the paintbrush to draw a canvas on which to paint. You can paint only in the canvas area. The paint tools will then be available. Unlike our old Macs, the imacs have enough memory to use the paint tools. To fill an object with color: First click on the Fill Formatting button. Click once on the Color Palette button and the palette will appear. You do not need to continue to hold down the mouse. Click on a color to select it. To go back to no fill or color, click on the Fill Formatting button and select white from the Color Palette. Click once on the color palette button to select a pen color. Click once on the Line Weight button to make thicker lines. Click once on the Arrow Style button to make arrows using the line tool. 3 Graphics/Images The clip art in AppleWorks 6 is in the Clippings, not the Library. From the File Menu, select Show Clippings. Use the tabs at the bottom of the Clippings window to select a specific group of clip art pictures. To Insert the image: Once you have found an appropriate image, drag it into your document. If you click on the Text tool prior to inserting the image, the image will insert as text and move with the text. If you click on the Pointer tool prior to inserting the image, you will be able to drag it around the page as an independent image. Click on the Wrap tool to make the text wrap around the image. You can use the handles on the image to resize it. To locate a specific image: Type the subject in the search line and click on search. AppleWorks will automatically open your Internet browser and search the AppleWorks web site for the image. If you want to save the image on your hard drive for future use, first drag the image to a document, then drag it into one of the tabs in the clippings window. Speak Text Highlight the text you want read aloud. Click on the Speak Text button. Appleworks 6 Changes by J. Kilcourse 3/02 page 3

4 Templates AppleWorks comes with a variety of standard templates contained in the Starting Points. When using templates, you are actually opening a copy of the original template so that whatever changes you make do not change the original template. You can also access hundreds of templates with preset content and formatting from the AppleWorks web site. Click on the Templates to go directly to the AppleWorks templates web page. You may wish to go the the School Templates or the Just for Kids templates at the bottom of the page. Open the template, make whatever text changes you wish, and save the template with an appropriate file name. Appleworks 6 Changes by J. Kilcourse 3/02 page 4 Column

5 Tables Tables allow you to organize information in rows and columns, which can be useful to display data in an easy-to-read format. Row Fred Student Shahana Score 1 Column Score To Create a Table - as in-line text This method will make the table the full width of the page and becomes part of the text on the page, moving as text is added above it. Open a new Word Processing Document From the Table Menu, select Insert Table Enter the number of rows and columns you want for your table. To Create a Table - as a drawing. This method will make the table whatever width you choose to draw. It can be moved around the page by dragging it like an image. Open a new Word Processing Document From the Toolbar, select the Table Creation tool Enter the number of rows and columns you want for your table. The table will appear as a graphic that can be moved or resized. Change the column width Place your cursor over the vertical line dividing the columns and wait for the cursor to change to a double line with an arrow. Drag the line to the right or left. Change the row height Place your cursor over the horizontal line dividing the rows and wait for the cursor to change to a double line with an arrow. Drag the line up or down. To type in the table Double click inside the cell in which you wish to type. You should see a I beam for your cursor. As you type, the text will automatically wrap to the next line and the cell will grow. Table Menu - Use the Table Menu to add or delete columns and rows and to distribute them evenly. Divide Cells - Highlight the cell to be divided and use the cutter tool toolbar to cut the cell. from the Vertical Alignment - Highlight the cell, from the Table Menu select Vertical Alignment and choose top, middle, or bottom. 6 Styles The new Styles window contains a variety of formatting features. You will need the Styles window open to use bullets, numbers, and check boxes. From the Format Menu, select Show Styles. Bullets Highlight the text or list to be bulleted. Double-Click on bullet in the Styles window. Each time you press return, a bullet will be added to the list. To remove bullets, highlight the text and doubleclick bullet again. Checkboxes Highlight the text or list to contain the checkboxes. Double-Click on checkbox in the Styles window. Each time you press return, another checkbox will be added to the list. To remove check boxes, highlight the text and double-click checkbox again. When used in a document, you can click on the checkbox in your text to actually make a check in the box. Numbers 1. The use of the number style can make the creation of worksheets and tests very easy. 2. You can turn on the numbering before you type the text, or by highlighting the text after it is typed. 3. Each time you press return, another number will appear. 4. If you want to have some sentences not numbered in one of your numbered lists, use a soft return. Hold Down the Shift Key when pressing return. Each of these two sentences were created with a soft return. 5. To remove numbering, highlight the text and double-click number in the Styles window again. Promote and Demote Text To tab an entire paragraph or line, highlight the text and click on Demote (to the right) or Promote (to the left). This paragraph is demoted to the right. 7 Presentations (Slide Show) This part of AppleWorks 6 has the most changes of all. To create a slide show presentation, you now click on the Presentation Button in the Button Bar. Slides require a lot of memory. If you have any problems, you may wish to allocate more memory to the AppleWorks program. See your media specialist for help. Add a Slide Delete a Slide Step 1: Create a Master Slide Transitions Whatever you put on the master slide will appear on every slide. It s a good place to set a background color or fonts, for example. *You do not have to use the master slide! Young children tend to want different colors, etc. on each page. 1. Click on the Master Tab in the Controls Window. 2. Add to this slide anything you want on every slide in the presentation. Use the drawing tools to add a colored background (draw a colored square over the entire slide) or to add clip art. Set the font size and style from the Format Menu Master Slide Slide Groups Show 3. Give the master slide a name. Just click on the untitled part of the slide and type Master. 4. SAVE. Step 2: Create your slides. 1. Click on the Slide Tab and a new blank slide will appear. You will not see your master slide. 2. Click on the + to add a new slide. This one should appear with the elements you selected on your master slide. Give the slide a name so you can easily identify it later. Slide 1, title, or subject name would be appropriate titles. 3. To delete the first slide (that doesn t have the master slide elements), click on the first slide so that it turns blue. Then click on the - button to delete it. If you didn t use a master slide, skip this step. 4. Design your slide using text boxes and draw tools. You can insert clippings, photographs, or draw images. Appleworks 6 Changes by J. 8 5. Click on the + to add another slide. Title each one, so that later you can put them in order. 6. SAVE the slide show often! Change sequence of slides - Simply drag the slides in the controls panel to a new location. Transitions Transitions are the visual effects that appear between one slide and the next. It is a new feature in AppleWorks. 1. Select a slide. 2. Select a transition from the pull down menu in the Controls window. 3. Select each slide in the presentation and select a transition for each one. View the Show 1. Click on the play tab. 2. If you want the show to play continuously, click on Auto- Advance, and set the number of seconds. 3. If you want to control the slide advance. Don t select Auto- Advance. During the slide show, you will have to click the mouse each time you want to advance a slide. 4. Click Show Cursor to hide the mouse cursor during the slide show. 5. Click the Play button. 6. When the slide show is completed, press the ESC key to end the show. Sounds and Movies 1. If you want to put sounds and movies into a slide show, you must first create a folder to contain all your parts -- the slide show, the sounds, the movies. 2.
