2 Page 4 Page 5 By Michael Parson Banja typeface The story for the Banja typeface started through a contest call for script style typeface. With a specific set of constraints, the goal was to design a non connecting script that could be used for branding or editorial design. However, the initial sketches of the typeface were rejected and left me with the question of what to do next? 3 Page 6 Page 7 Page 7 As I was quite excited by the first sketches and still felt felt that the overall design had potential, I decided to continue the work and finalise the forms as a complete typeface. My inspiration had been a mix of a few previous designs but the Banco typeface, by Phil Grimshaw, was a strong source as I was quite intrigued by the vitality of the style that seemed to mix script influences with a more formal shape. With my own design, I had equally tried to create a vibrant design and wanted to hint to the original source through the name Banja. With a very heavy and pronounced vertical stroke, the letterforms convey a laid back, surfer type attitude and that became a focus for the extension of my work. Creating a lively and bouncy script that would be legible and original. 5 Page 10 Page 11 Est & Co. The original brief required a non connecting script, as such, I had focused on creating letterforms that would not require ligatures or other features. But as I worked on the letters. I kept exploring other solutions that I felt could be added to the base glyphs. These other shapes became the basis for my secondary push on this typeface, the Opentype features. So I started to implement a series of variant letters that could be used as swash forms, these new additions where focused on adding a bit more variety and randomness to the overall design. But as I added the new letters, I also started to have more issues with colliding letters and situation where ligatures would help. The natural evolution was therefore to add a wide range of ligatures and discretionary ligatures that can be activated to solve certain clashes in word strings. Banja equally features two ampersand forms, the first is the more common looped shape that most people have come to associate with the ampersand, and in the second, I decided to add a more eccentrc form inspired by the historical et ligature. 7 Page 14 Page 15 Banja features 2 set of numerals, the base lining forms that are the standard set and will be used in most situations, and the secondary forms, the scientific numerals in superscript and inferior positions. My thinking was not so much that a designer would use Banja for a scientific formula, but rather that the superscript numbers can also be used for setting prices when the decimal numbers are used in smaller sizes. This option seemed a very practical choice for menus, flyers and layouts. However, Jiya reveals his understanding that it is in the presence of danger that one learns to be brave, and to appreciate how wonderful life can be.
