1 Adobe InDesign CC 2017 InDesign is used for print and layout design. It is one of the best programs to work with text and make publications, fliers, and printed designs. New Document Toolbar Exporting as a PDF File>New>Document When starting in InDesign determine what type of project you will be creating. Most often you will be working with either Document or Book. A book is is made up of multiple documents, or Pages. Choose page size, number of pages, orientation, number of columns, and margin sizes. Selection Direct Selection Page Gap Content Collector Window>Tools Select, move, or resize entire objects Select points on a path or content in a frame Create multiple page sizes within a document Adjust Spacing between objects Collect and place multiple objects File>Export Exporting allows you to view your document or book as a PDF. In the dialogue boxes that follow click Save and Export. Type Create text frames and select text Line Draw straight line segments Pen Pencil Create straight and curved paths Draw open and closed free form paths Rectangle Frame Create square or rectangle placeholder Rectangle Create square or rectangle shape Scissors Split paths in at specified points in a frame Free Transform Rotate, scale, or shear an object Pages Window>Pages Gradient Swatch Gradient Feather Note Eyedropper Insert and adjust different gradients Fade and object into the background Add comments on a selection Sample color from images, text, or objects In the second dialogue box choose which pages to export, whether spread or pages, and what to include then click Export. Packaging Change page size, add and delete pages Use the Pages window to move and add pages. Hand Zoom Fill and Stroke Formatting Effects Apply Color View Moves the page view Magnify in and out Choose and change color of an element Whether formatting effects object or text Apply gradient, color, or nothing Choose between view options File>Package... Package gathers copies of all images and fonts used in the document along with a copy of the InDesign document itself into a single folder that you can easily deliver to a print service provider or to a colleague. Click Package..., Continue, and Package in the three successive dialogue boxes. 2 Workspaces Workspaces are a great way to personalize the tools and panels that surround the opened program window. This could be a simple way to work on projects in a fast and productive way. Typography This workspace is great for adding text to your project. Here, you will have all the text manipulation tools in the panels where you can quickly access them. This will give you panels that will allow you to view your Pages, adjust the Characters of your text, add variations to Paragraphs and alter the Margins of your page. Digital Publishing This is a workspcae set for editing and making final desicions on your project. This is helpful in polishing your project to perpare it for the public eye. This will give you helpful panels that will allow you to use Animations, add other Media and Hyperlinks, and make your document interactive for the Web. Book This workspace is best for creating and printing a book. This will give you helpful panels that will allow you to view your Pages, add smart objects, and edit paragraph styles. Essentials This workspace is recommended for people who are new to Photoshop due to its Basic tool set up. Here you can learn the functions of Photoshop or do quick edits to your project. Customize a Workspaces When you feel comfortable with Photoshop and know the tools that you need. Creating your own workspace that best fits you can be a quick and productive way of getting projects done. You can change the tool bar, add/remove work panels (e.g. History, color panel, Layers panel), and even change the hotkeys (shortcuts) on your keyboard.

3 Adding Images File>Place Add photos or graphics by using the Place option in InDesign. Choose your file from the computer and then click anywhere on the page. Instead of clicking the photo in place you can also drag it into being. This makes it a specific size right away. Cropping To Crop in an image simply drag in any of the frame controls. Pixelated Photos? Color and Stroke There are multiple ways to utilize Color and alter Stroke in InDesign. Most can be found under Window>Color. You can mix your own colors and create gradients with the gradient tools. Window>Color Window>Stroke Clicking once on the image will select the frame of the image. The frame controls what part of the image is seen. If your images look pixelated turn on High Quality Display: View>Display Performance>High Quality Display Alignment Window>Object & Layout>Align Swatches is where you can save colors and create color sets. The Stroke is the outline around an object or text. Double clicking, or clicking the circle in the middle will select the image itself. Use the Align tool to line up, distribute or space objects. Choose what to base the alignment on with the Align To option. T h efi l l and stroke icons are in the toolbar and dock. If you drag while the image is selected the frame will not move. Picas, Margins, Rules, Grids & Guides Double click the fill or stroke icon to view the Color Picker. To scale the photo and the frame at the same time use and scale from a corner. Picas are the unit of measurement used in design. There are 6 picas to an inch. To change the unit of measurement to inches or otherwise: InDesign>Preferences>Units&Increments Margins and Columns can be determined in the new document dialogue box or under: Layout>Margins and Columns Grids & Guides as well as the Ruler can be turned on and off under: View>Grids&Guides View>Hide/Show Ruler Use the Gradient Swatch Tool and the Gradient Feather Tool to create gradients. The Gradient Feather Tool will create a transparent gradient. Clicking the arrow to the right of the stroke or fill opens the drop down menu

4 Managing Text Keyboard Shortcuts Dock Tools To add text to your design select the Type Tool in the toolbar and drag a text box to the desired size. To alter the size of the box use the selection tool. The Paragraph window allows you to choose text alignment and add indents and drop caps. To unhyphenate uncheck the Hyphenate box. Right click on a file name and choose Relink to update the file location. Layers Shortcut to paragraph Size & Leading Columns Gutter Window>Layers Use Layers to organize and better control your content. Each layer has a color and name which can be edited by double clicking on the layer. Determine arrangement and use the different tools to view your design in multiple ways. Caps Kern & Tracking Type of wrap Change Spacing Additional Options Hide/View Lock/Unlock Working Layer Selected? When you see a red question mark next to a file name, you must relink the broken link. New Layer Delete Text Wrap changes how text works around images and how close the two are to each other.
