Introduction to Indesign Adobe packages for Graphic Designer overview Adobe Illustrator: for drawing illustration, logo Adobe Photoshop: for photo manipulation Adobe Indesign: for page layout Introduction to Adobe Indesign workspace Workspace = working table, cluttered with many tools to work on the artwork Palettes can be hidden and shown to provide palettes in demand Palettes can be docked and floated to provide flexible positioning Palettes can be grouped and ungrouped to organise closely related palettes within 1 palette group, but they are only available once at the time Palettes can be stacked and unstacked if 2 closely related palettes are required to be available at the same time Workspace can saved and loaded to provide unique workspace for different users Indesign Navigation Zoom Tool: To change the viewing distance o Zoom in: At Tool Bar, Activate Zoom tool (from Tool palette or shortcut) then CLICK to zoom in o Zoom out: At Tool Bar, Activate Zoom tool (from Tool palette or shortcut) then ALT + CLICK to zoom out Hand Tool: To move around the artwork o At Tool Bar, Activate Hand tool (from Tool palette or shortcut) then CLICK + DRAG to move around o Press SPACEBAR with any activated tools to temporarily use hand tool Selection Tool: To select and do basic transformation such as moving and scaling o At Tool Bar, Activate Selection tool (from Tool palette or shortcut) then CLICK on the object o To select multiple objects, holding SHIFT while CLICKING the object to add the selections or CLICK + DRAG to make rectangular selection and anything within the rectangular selection area will be selected 3

5 02. Introduction to Photobook It s getting more and more common nowadays and it serves for many purposes such as for artwork showcase, memory or for storytelling. To create Photobook in Indesign requires several planning instead of jump straight away onto the computer and play around with page layout software Planning includes Photobook Concept o Purpose: What the photobook for o Style: What impression you want the viewers to feel o Dimension: The size of the photobook, normally A4 size, but square is not uncommon o Orientation: it can be portrait or landscape Photobook sections may include o Cover: The gate to enter your photobook world o Table of Content: To provide overview and navigation for your photobook o Main content: 1 big chapter that contains introduction and content pages or Couple of sections to organise different topics (Such as different type of artwork, different visited countries, and many more) Photobook elements may include but not limited to o Page layout: The way we organise the photo and information Photo symbol Heading symbol Body copy symbol o Page background: To provide more interesting scene without distracting the main content Solid colour Gradient colour Low opacity image o Photo: The main contents of photobook and it may vary in size depending on how the layout is created o Heading: Short text as description of the page or caption of the photo o Body copy: Long information that may include description of the photo, poem, etc 5

7 03. Photobook Sections Page setup include: o Document size : Canvas size or printable are size o Column & gutter: Column serves as text boundary or guidelines within margin area. Gutter is the distance between column o Margin: Inner page boundary o Bleed: Extension area required if there are any image or colour reaching the edge of the page o Slug: Master pages o Template for various layouts o Any actual documents that are linked to certain master page will be affected by master page modification o It s useful if there are consistency and repetition required across the pages Page Palette o Master Page section New Master Page: To create brand new Master Pager Duplicate Master Page: To duplicate Master page from existing Master Page Master Page based on other master page: To create New Master Page based on existing Master Page, the change at Base master page will affect the linked Master Page o Actual documents section Insert page(s): Insert new working page(s) Delete page(s): Delete existing working page(s) Move page(s): Change the order of existing page(s) Shortcut to... Page Layout Layout Ideas (Put some pics here) Ruler & Guidelines o Show / Hide ruler: To display the ruler on the canvas At Menu Bar, View > Show Ruler or View > Hide Ruler o Change the units at ruler: To change the measurement used by the ruler into various units such as millimetres, centimetres, inches, etc At Menu Bar, Edit > Preferences > Unit & Increments o Vertical & horizontal guideline: To provide non printable line to align the objects in Indesign Drag the guideline out from horizontal ruler or vertical ruler o Page guideline & spread guideline: The guideline can be used on certain page only or across the page (spread) Align & distribute o Align & distribute according to margin, page or spread: The options provided by align palette to choose whether the alignment and distribution of the objects are made according to the selection, margin, page or spread o Align vertically: To align the (selected) objects vertically At Align Palette, Click 1 (one) of the first 3 (three) options at first row icons o Align horizontally: To align the (selected) objects horizontally At Align Palette, Click 1 (one) of the last 3 (three) options at first row icons o Distribute vertically: To distribute the (selected) objects vertically At Align Palette, Click 1 (one) of the first 3 (three) options at second row icons o Distribute horizontally: To distribute the (selected) objects horizontally At Align Palette, Click 1 (one) of the first 3 (three) options at second row icons Frame / shape o Rectangular frame /shape: To create rectangular text / image frame or the create rectangle shape o Ellipse frame/shape: To create elliptical text / image frame or the create rectangle shape o Polygon frame/shape: To create polygonal text / image frame or the create rectangle shape o Star frame/shape: To change the setting of polygonal frame / shape to create star shapes Transformation o Scale: To enlarge or shrink the shape of the object o Rotate: To change the angle of the object o Shear: To skew the shape of the object o Reflect: To flip the object vertically or horizontally Pathfinder o Add: To combine 2 (two or more objects as one o Subtracts: To crop the object at the bottom stack with the objects above it o Intersect: To crop the object where the overlapping area of 2 (two) or more objects remains whilst the other are ignored o Exclude: To combine 2 (two) or more objects, where the odd number of overlapping areas remain and the even number of overlapping areas are ignored o Minus back: To crop the object at the top stack with the objects below it Direct selection tool o Manipulate point(s): to select 1(one) or more points within a shape and manipulate them 9

Page Background Colour o Fill colour: Colour within the shape At Tool Bar, double click Fill Colour icon At Colour Palette, select Fill Colour icon then select the colour from the Colour ramp At Swatch Palette, At Tool Bar, make sure Fill Colour icon is in front of Stroke Colour icon then select predefined colour from Swatch Palette o Stroke colour: Colour around the shape / outline At Tool Bar, double click Stroke Colour icon At Colour Palette, select Stroke Colour icon then select the colour from the Colour ramp At Swatch Palette, At Tool Bar, make sure Stroke Colour icon is in front of Fill Colour icon then select predefined colour from Swatch Palette o Eyedropper Tool: To take sample of pixel colour and apply to the current selection of the image Gradient o Gradient type: The choice of Linear (Straight line) or Radial (Spreading outward) type of gradient At Gradient Palette, select gradient type from the drop down menu o Gradient angle: The angle of Linear gradient colour At Gradient Palette, type in the desired number into angle input text o Gradient colour: 2 (two) or more colour combination to make gradient colour At Gradient Palette, select gradient type from the drop down menu Change resolution in Photoshop o Without resample: This affects the image size without adding extra pixels or deleting existing pixels from the image o With resample: This option will add extra pixels (upsampling) or delete existing pixels (downsampling) from the image. Extra pixels are not necessarily adding extra detail into the image Place Image: Link external image and place it into the current canvas / page Modify Image o Transform frame & content: Image or text in Indesign are placed within container frame. We can transform the frame only, content only or both at the same time o Transform Frame Using Selection Tool to resize the frame o Transform Content Using Direct Selection Tool to select the content, and use transformation tool to modify the content Transparency: To set the opacity level of the object to make it fully transparent or semi transparent o At Control Palette, drag the slider of the opacity level or input the desired number into opacity input text 11

Photo Arrange o Bring to front: Change the stacking order of the currently selected object to the top most stack o Send to back: Change the stacking order of the currently selected object to the bottom most stack o Bring forward: Change the stacking order of the currently selected object to the upper stack o Send backward: Change the stacking order of the currently selected object to the lower stack Group & Ungroup o Group objects: To make multiple selected objects as 1 (one) group o Ungroup objects: To ungroup previously grouped objects o Access grouped object: To select 1 (one) or more object within grouped objects Border o Border size: The thickness of the stroke / border o Border Colour: The colour of the stroke (Solid or gradient colour) o Border style: Options for the border style to create custom stroke or using predefined stroke style Object Effects o Drop shadow: To create shadow behind the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Drop Shadow o Inner shadow: To create shadow inside the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Inner Shadow o Outer glow: To create glow effect outside the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Outer Glow o Inner glow: To create glow effect inside the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Inner Glow o Bevel & emboss: To create emboss or deboss effect on the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Bevel and Emboss o Satin: To create silky / satiny effect on the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Satin o Basic feather: To create soft edge effect around the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Basic Feather o Directional feather: To create directional soft edge around the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Directional Feather o Gradient feather: To create gradual soft edge within the object At Menu Bar, Object > Effects > Gradient Feather Object style o Create object style: The applied object effect on certain object can be saved as graphic style Select the object with effect, at Graphic Style Palette, click Create New Style icon to create new style o Apply object style: To apply previously created object style into selected object(s) Select the object where the style will be applied onto, the at Graphic Style Palette, select the graphic style that we want to use 13

14 Manipulate & import image with transparency o Use Photoshop to manipulate the image: Create image with transparency area at Adobe Photoshop then save it as PSD (Native format of Adobe Photoshop) or TIFF format with transparency support. The imported image will retain its transparency where it s placed into Indesign canvas Shortcut to... Heading Text in Indesign o Paragraph text: Text with rectangular frame as its boundary o Shape text: Text with custom shape as its boundary o Text on path: Text that is running on custom path or shape o Outline text: Text that has been converted into an object that can serve as frame or design element Character palette o Font family: The typeface option for the text At Character Palette, select Font Family drop down menu o Font style: Using its bold, italic or bold and italic version of the selected typeface At Character Palette, select Font Style drop down menu o Font size: The size of the text At Character Palette, select Font Size drop down menu or input desired number into font size input text o Leading: Vertical distance of the text from one line to the next line (baseline) At Character Palette, select Leading drop down menu or input desired number into leading input text. The number smaller than the current font size will make the vertical distance smaller and vice versa o Kerning: Horizontal adjustment of 2 (two) characters suitable for adjusting short text such as display text / title At Character Palette, select Kerning drop down menu or input desired number into kerning input text. Negative number will make the horizontal distance smaller and vice versa o Tracking: Horizontal adjustment of selected text or the whole paragraph At Character Palette, select Tracking drop down menu or input desired number into tracking input text. Negative number will make the horizontal distance smaller and vice versa o Horizontal scaling: Horizontal distortion of the currently selected text At Character Palette, select Horizontal Scaling drop down menu or input desired number into horizontal scaling input text. Negative number will make the horizontal distance smaller and vice versa o Vertical scaling: Vertical distortion of the currently selected text At Character Palette, select Vertical Scaling drop down menu or input desired number into vertical scaling input text. Negative number will make the vertical distance smaller and vice versa o Shift baseline: Vertical manipulation of the currently selected text against its baseline At Character Palette, input desired number into shift baseline input text. Positive number will push the text above its baseline and vice versa o Skew character: Change the angle of the currently selected text At Character Palette, input desired angle number into Skew Character input box. Positive number skews the character to the right side and vice versa Character Style o Create character style: Modified character can be saved as character styles to be used for future use. This feature is very useful to maintain consistency across character style Select the text with modification, at Character Style Palette, click Create New Style icon to create new style o Apply character style: To apply previously created character style into selected text(s) Select the text where the style will be applied onto, the at Character Style Palette, select the character style that we want to use 15

17 08. Body copy Threading text o Thread to new paragraph text: When working with long text, sometimes the text frame that we create is not enough to accommodate the length of the content. The overflowing text is indicated by Red PLUS sign at the right bottom corner of the text frame. We can thread / link the text frame by creating new paragraph text CLICK Red Plus sign at the right corner of the text frame, then CLICK + DRAG to create new text frame for the overflowing text o Thread to existing shape: Overflowing text can be threaded into existing shape Create new shape / frame, CLICK Red Plus sign at the right corner of the text frame, then CLICK anywhere in the within the aimed shape / frame Paragraph text o Paragraph Alignment: To left align, centre align, right align or justified align the paragraph At Paragraph Palette, select 1 (one) of the options from the first row icons o Paragraph indention: To indent the whole paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for the paragraph indention o First line indention: To indent first line of the paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for the first line paragraph indention o Space before & after paragraph: To set the space before or after a paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for space before and / or after the paragraph o Drop Cap: To set the Drop Cap for a paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for how big is the Drop Cap size (according to the number of the line from the paragraph) and how many character(s) is included in the Drop Cap option Paragraph style o Create paragraph style: Modified paragraph can be saved as paragraph styles to be used for future use. This feature is very useful to maintain consistency across paragraph style Select the text with modification, at Paragraph Style Palette, click Create New Style icon to create new style o Apply paragraph style: To apply previously created character style into selected text(s) Select the text where the style will be applied onto, the at Paragraph Style Palette, select the paragraph style that we want to use Text wrap o Text wrap is useful feature to automatically wrap the text that overlap with text frame / graphic frame Select the text frame / graphic frame where the text wrap feature will be applied on. Activate Text Wrap Palette then select various text wrap option from the first row of the text wrap icons Page Numbering o Page numbering uses special marker to refer to the number we set at Pages Palette At Pages Palette, select Master Page that we want to have page numbering on. Create text frame and insert special marker at Menu Bar select Type > Insert Special Characters > Markers > Current Page Number 17

At menu Bar, Table > Insert Table Resize table (row & column): To accommodate information space or to provide more breathing space within the row, column or cell While table is selected, put the cursor on the row or column line that you want to resize until it changes into double arrow cursor, then CLICK + DRAG to resize it Insert row & column: To add more row or column as necessary Select a row or column, then at menu Bar, Table > Insert > Row or Table > Insert > Column Delete row & column: To remove unwanted row or column Select the row or column that you want to delete, then at menu Bar, Table > Delete > Row or Table > Delete > Column Stylise table: To decorate the table, row, column or cell While the table is selected, at Menu Bar, Table > Table Options > Table Setup to access to various options to control table appearance Shortcut to... Interactivity Note Button: To convert an object into a button to be used as interactive tool o Create an object and convert it into button (at Menu Bar, Object > Interactive > Convert to button) o Activate Button Palette if it s not previously shown, then select the Event to tell Indesign on what event it will trigger the button. And then, add Action for specific response to be given Page Transition: To add page transition when we move from one page to another o Select 1 (one) of the actual document that you want the Page transition to be applied onto, then display Page Transition Palette (At Menu Bar, Window > Interactive > Page Transitions). Select the Page Transition type from the drop down menu. The small icon at the right bottom corner is used if the current page transitions will be used for all of the pages Hyperlink: To create text or object as hyperlink to open a webpage o Select object or text that will be used as hyperlink. Activate Hyperlink Palette (At Menu Bar, Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks). Type the web address into URL Input Text. By default, the object or text will have black outline around it, but it can be eliminate easily by CLICK-ing recently created Hyperlink then select Invisible or Appearance > Type drop down menu 23

25 12. Export Export as PDF (for Printing): Exporting as PDF for printing will be required to maintain the image quality as high as possible. Resample feature is limited to acceptable resolution of the image for printing o At Menu Bar, File > Adobe PDF Preset s> High Quality or File > Adobe PDF Preset s> Press Quality. It will be useful to include printing mark for press Export as Interactive PDF: Exporting as PDF for / web with interactivity purpose will be required to create the file as small as possible. o At Menu Bar, File> Adobe PDF Presets> Smallest File Size. In the Include section, activate the relevant checkbox such as Hyperlinks or Interactive Elements Export as SWF: Export as SWF supports Turn Page transition as well as automatically to create HTML page. o At menu Bar, File > Export and then choose SWF from t he Save As Type drop down menu, choose SWF Note 25
