5 What is Desktop Publishing? Desktop publishing is the creation of print documents using a personal computer and WYSIWYG ( What You See Is What You Get ) page layout software.

6 What is InDesign? InDesign is the current industry standard desktop publishing software, produced by Adobe Used to create print products like brochures, posters, newspapers, magazines and books. Also used to create digital products like ebooks and digital magazines

7 CMYK vs. RGB Will your project be print or digital?

8 CMYK Colour model for print, using inks Also known as process or four-colour. Stands for: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black) All four colours of ink combined can produce a deep black ( rich black )

10 RGB Colour model for electronic systems such as computer monitors and television screens, using light. RGB stands for: Red, Green, Blue The RGB model combines red, green and blue light to produce a range of colours - all three combined in equal intensity produces white. 19 Accurate specs The printer is your best friend Before setting up your document, find out: Page size Safe margins Bleed

20 Go Ahead! Make a document From the Start workspace, click on New (or +N / ctrl+n) Intent: Print Number of pages: 1 Width: 150mm Height: 100mm Margins: 3.48mm The link icon will apply to all sides Bleed: 1.588mm Click OK Now you have your first InDesign document!

21 InDesign Interface So what is all this stuff?

22 Menu Bar Contains standard application menus like File and Edit where you can find Save, Copy, Paste, etc. Find and edit application and document settings in Preferences On Mac: InDesign CC > Preferences or +K On PC: File > Preferences or ctrl+k Add extra panels from the Window menu

23 Application Bar Change the document s magnification Show and hide layout aids (e.g. rulers and guides) Change the screen mode Control how multiple document windows display Select a workspace

24 Control Panel Gives info and options based on what you have selected Text selected Text box selected Frame selected

25 Tools Panel Some of the most commonly used tools: Selection tool (v) selects objects Direct selection tool (a) selects contents within a frame or points on a path Type tool (t) Pen tool for Bézier curves aka paths Pencil tool for freeform drawing Rectangle frame tool creates frames to insert links into Rectangle tool creates a rectangular (or other shaped) path Click and hold tools with triangles in the corners to see extra tools!

26 Panels Commonly-used options and features Panels can be added in the Window menu Panels can be grouped together in a dock Panels and docks can float in workspace and remain open Open a panel by clicking on its name or icon Collapse a panel by clicking on the double-arrows at the top right of the panel See or hide more options by clicking the panel menu icon at the top right of the panel Your panel layout can be saved as a custom Workspace

27 Page Elements Page: black outline Bleed: red outline for when an object must to print to the edge of a page Pasteboard: area outside the page Margins and column guides: pink/purple lines on page help you align objects

28 Display Options Display Performance: Fast, Typical, or High Quality display of graphics View > Display Performance for entire document Right-click on object to adjust only its display performance View > Screen Mode: for various previews of your document + W / ctrl + W for page preview Window > Arrange > New window/split window: allow you to see parallax views of the same document

29 Layers Like transparent sheets stacked on top of each other Apply to all pages of your document View an ordered list of the objects on each layer by clicking on the triangle to the left of the layer name Can be set to printing or non-printing Can be locked View or hide layers and objects by clicking on the eye icon to the left of the layer/object

30 Go Ahead! Create a new layer Open the Layers panel Click the Create new layer icon at the bottom Double-click your new layer for options Re-name to CP postcard template Un-check Print layer Click OK

31 Graphics Graphics are contained within frames Use the Selection tool (shortcut: V, Esc) to select/move/scale a frame Use the direct selection tool (shortcut: A) to select/move/scale the graphic within the frame

32 Links Graphics placed in InDesign are screen resolution versions of an outside file Moving or re-naming the original file will result in a missing link Re-link a missing link to the proper file using the re-link icon Modifying the original file will result in a modified link Update a modified link by clicking on the update link icon Select a link in your Links panel and click the triangle in the bottom left corner to expand link information

33 Go Ahead! Place an image Select your new CP postcard template layer Select your frame tool (shortcut: F) On page 1, draw a frame the same size as your page with the frame selected, you can adjust the size by dragging the corners, or typing in the size you want in the Control panel at the top left Go to File > Place (shortcut: + D / ctrl + D) From CampTechPostcard > 02-Images, select PC_100x150_Front.eps

34 Text Goes inside a text frame Can be typed into the frame or placed from an outside text document Text is edited, and text frames created, using the Type tool (shortcut: t) Text boxes can be threaded together Text that does not fit inside a frame is overset and a red squared plus-sign will appear near the bottom right corner

35 Go Ahead! Write some text Select your Type tool (shortcut: T) Click and drag on your page to create a text frame Your cursor will now be inside the text frame, so type away! Edit your text using the options in the control panel Change your text colour in the Swatches panel

36 Go Ahead! Place some text Select your Type tool (shortcut: T) Click and drag on your page to create a text frame Go to File > Place (shortcut: + D / ctrl + D) Navigate to CampTechPostcard > 03-Text, select PostcardText.txt Edit your text using the options in the control panel Change your text colour in the Swatches panel Rotate your text box using the Rotation angle option in the control panel, or by moving your cursor just outside one of the corner handles until the rotate symbol appears, click, hold and rotate until you re happy with it.

37 Go Ahead! Draw a line Create a line using the Line tool (shortcut: \) Create a perfectly vertical, horizontal or 45 line by holding down shift as you drag

38 Go Ahead! Make a starburst frame Select the Polygon frame tool (hidden inside the Rectangle frame tool!) Double-click the polygon tool to get polygon settings Number of sides: 20 / Star inset: 20% With the frame selected, place ( + D / ctrl + D) the Camp Tech logo and scale it to fit using the scaling and fitting options in the control panel By selecting the logo with the Direct selection tool (A), you can then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to nudge

39 Go Ahead! Add a QR Code Go to Object > Generate QR Code Choose Type: Web Hyperlink In the URL field, type To edit the QR code later on, select it, then right click > Edit QR Code...

40 Preparing for print Remember: your printer is your best friend! Check that your preflight box at the bottom of the workspace isn t showing any errors (double-click to open the preflight panel) Go to File > Export ( + E / ctrl + E) Choose a name and location, select Adobe PDF (Print) in the Format drop-down, Save Choose an Adobe PDF preset (use High Quality Print for this postcard) Under Marks and Bleed, check Use document bleed settings, Export
