InDesign Review WHEN YOUR PAGE LAUNCHES: It will look like this (in normal view): HINT: Make sure your workspace is set to default (look under WINDOW TAB > WORKSPACE > DEFAULT WORKSPACE PAGE
InDesign Review THE TOOLBAR (LEFT OF PAGE): A look at what you will use frequently Selection tool (selects text or photo box to work in) and allows you to move things around the page Direct Selection tool (selects content in box) Selection Tool Tip: To Active Both Selection tools, allowing you to adjust the box size and size of content at the same time, click on Selection Tool and Command key. Text Tool. Also includes Type on a Path Tool Line tool (for drawing lines on your page) Rectangle (or shape) frame tool (for photos) Rectangle (or shape) tool (for text boxes) Rotate tool Gradient tool Free transform a text box or photo Eyedropper tool (for matching colors) Hand tool (for moving around page when zoomed in) Zoom tool (allows you to enlarge the page view) Fill tool (allows you to fill an area with color. And control stroke (border colors too) Preview Controls: Normal shows gridlines. Preview shows without gridlines
InDesign Review TOOLS PALETTE (RIGHT OF PAGE): A look at what you will use frequently Character Tab: Make adjustments to the text (individual letters), like font, font type and size. Adjust height of letters. Adjust kerning (spacing between each letter) Paragraph Tab: Make adjustments to position text, like flush, right, center, justified. Create an initial (drop) cap.
InDesign Review TOOLS PALETTE (RIGHT OF PAGE): A look at what you will use frequently Stroke Tab: A stroke is the outline you place around a letter, graphic or photo. Weight = size of that outline. If you have a line drawn on your page, you can adjust the type of line and size and color of the line too. Swatches Tab: Allows you to adjust the color to your stroke or a text box.
InDesign Review DROPDOWN MENU (TOP OF PAGE): A look at what you will use frequently Type Drop Down Menu: To indent a new paragraph, go to INSERT WHITE SPACE > EM SPACE Do this twice to indent for a new paragraph
InDesign Review DROPDOWN MENU (TOP OF PAGE): A look at what you will use frequently Object Drop Down Menu: Go here to access the EFFECTS MENU so that you can add an effect to text, photo, graphic, box, etc. Effects include gradient, inner glow, outer glow, bevel and emboss, and drop shadow, to name a few. Within each effect menu, there are countless modifications you can make to your effect (size, color, etc.), just like in Photoshop. You can really manipulate the way things look by using the Effects Menu
InDesign Review DROPDOWN MENU (TOP OF PAGE): A look at what you will use frequently Object Drop Down Menu: When you layout a box on the page (that is not an invisible text box), you will need to adjust the borders of the box so that the text and photos don t lay right against the edges of your box. This is accomplished by going to TEXT FRAME OPTIONS. This allows you to move the text and photos contained within your box off the borders. HINT 1: Link All 4 Box Positions Go to Inset Spacing HINT 2: Click on preview to see your changes as you make them on the page EXAMPLE This is what it looks like when you adjust the text frame options to add some space between the border and your content. See the space between the edge of the box and the photos and text? It s even all around. It looks good. That s what you want!
InDesign Review DROPDOWN MENU (TOP OF PAGE): Save Frequently!!!
InDesign Review TOOL SUB-MENUs (TOP OF PAGE): These sub menu s appear and change depending on the tool you re using EXAMPLE Text Tool Sub Menu: Allows you to make text adjustments to font, style, size, spacing, paragraph (just like the character and paragraph side menus (to the right hand side of the page)
InDesign Review THE BLANK PAGE: GUTTERS Generally keep these free from content. COLUMNS Put Your Text, Graphics and Photos Here. Generally, the text from the story will stay within the column, but the headline, graphics and photos can spread across many columns. PLACE CONTENT HERE (text, photos, graphics) in these columns. Draw rectangles in columns with rectangle tool where you want stuff and then place content PAGE BOARDER Keep these free from content.
InDesign Review HOW TO PLACE TEXT CONTENT: 1. Create your rectangle box to drop your content in to. Match the edges of the box to the edge of the columns (keep it out of the gutter). 2. Go to FILE 3. Click on PLACE 4. When the FINDER browser opens up, find your content and select it
InDesign Review TIPS FOR PLACING TEXT: When you see this icon appear at the lower right of your text box, it means that you have more text to your story that your text box had room to hold. You will need to click on that icon then follow the instructions to the right Keyboard Shortcuts: Command + Zoom In Command - Zoom Out Command i Spell Check When you see this come up with your cursor, it means that you have ran out of space in your text box, but you have more text left in the story to place. If you simply drag that icon to the next column and click, it will drop that text in the next column (continuing the story)
InDesign Review HOW TO PLACE PHOTO CONTENT: 1. Create your rectangle frame box to drop your content in to. Match the edges of the box to the edge of the columns. 2. Go to FILE 3. Click on PLACE 4. When the FINDER browser opens up, find your content and select it
InDesign Review Selection tool (selects photo box to work in) Direct Selection tool (selects content in box) Tips for Placing Photo Content: To enlarge/shrink the size of the photo content box, click on the selection tool and drag the corner of the box. To enlarge/shrink the size of the photo within the content box, click on the direct selection tool and drag the corner of the box. To enlarge/shrink BOTH the size of the photo content box, and the photo within the box, use the selection tool and hold down the command key. Then, drag the corner of the box To rotate the photo on the page, use the free transform tool and click near the corner of the box and rotate. Free transform a photo
InDesign Review TEXT WRAPPING AROUND PHOTO: Go to the sub menu at the top of the page and select one of the four text wrapping options. Choose the one that looks best in your layout. You can text wrap any photo or graphic.
InDesign Review CONTINUE, PLACING ALL OF YOUR CONTENT ON PAGE IN NORMAL MODE
InDesign Review THEN PREVIEW PAGE WITH CONTENT IN PREVIEW MODE To change views Click on View Button And hold down on mouse
InDesign Review READY TO PUBLISH PAGE!!!! TO PUBLISH YOUR FINISHED PAGE YOU NEED TO MAKE IT INTO A HIGH QUALITY ADOBE PDF FILE Name your file and save it to your folder! Select range of pages to include in the PDF file. Click EXPORT.
