3 What is gitlab an open-source clone of GitHub a web based system for managing git repositories plus lightweight issue tracker, wiki, etc. administration of each project is done by the owner(master) for that project no gitlab-admin intervention required for normal operations you should not need admin privileges unless you want to do administration of the service itself NB! managing, the version control itself is just git git over ssh and https working with the git repos does not require logging in to/using the web interface the GitLab visualization of branches and dis is quite good GitLab has forking and merge-requests like GitHub A brief introduction to the GitLab service at the department 3/14

4 not much GitLab i undervisningen Intended for use by department sta (in research and teaching) That does not include hosting git repositories for coursework Students can already work (locally, or remotely via ssh) against git repositories on the student computer system: For collaboration, Per Foreby sets up project groups (under /usr/local/proj) on the LTH student computer system, with no quota and custom access rights. Students can run git over ssh against that. They use their normal computer accounts, no account management required. Potential problems with scale, project lifetimes, who is responsible, etc. We do want to support master thesis projects on our GitLab service If there is a well motivated demand for it, another GitLab instance for coursework can be set up. 5 Workow for student projects the student creates an account for him/herself on the GitLab service the responsible person at the department creates a project and gives the student privileges to the project to structure multiple related projects, a group can be used rationale: we want control over project creation anyone can create an account (as default) only sta gets privileges for creating projects git-admin@cs.lth.se if you want privileges setting up a new student project shall require no admin intervention there shall be a responsible person for each project (as a contact point to the GitLab admins for solving problems and determining when a project can be deleted from the server.) 8 Getting started: SSH keys create SSH keys On your computer, run ssh-keygen like so: ssh-keygen -t rsa -C "git - sven.robertz@cs.lth.se" -f sven_git (leave passphrase empty) add SSH key: Prole Settings->SSH keys->add SSH key 1 Paste your public key (e.g., sven_git.pub) into the key eld 2 Give the key a name (Title). 14 Comments to git learners Git is not like CVS, Subversion, et al. Git is distributed, there is nothing special (as git is concerned) about the branches in GitLab, compared to your local branches git add does not add a le per se, it adds the current changes to that le git commit -a behaves like cvs commit: it adds all changes to tracked les before committing Be careful with rewriting history In particular, avoid forcing push (if you're not the only user of the project) Using git A brief introduction to the GitLab service at the department 14/14
