3 vulgat TYPEFACE SPECIMEN Page 3 SPECIMEN typeface uncial шрифт charlemagne император 1976 The name Vulgat was choosen as a reference to the historic roots of the typeface form and style. It stems from the latin word vulgo which means to propogate, to spread, to make public. This definition seemed perfect for the initial aim of the typeface which was to make a popular tool for the masses. introduction I have always been fascinated by the forms found in the uncial script style, a style that feels both familiar with certain letters that we still use in their original form, but also with other curves or shapes that seem more foreign and original. Our most common perception will be an irish, or atleast celtic association. Yet these forms where originally found in ancient greece or roman times, around the 4th to 8th century AD before spreading across europe, inspiring the later reforms of Charlemagne and the Carolingian miniscule. Since the celtic world was never conquered by rome or the later roman styled letterforms, the uncial style remained popular and therefore connected in their uses. My challenge was therefore to explore a historic inspiration, in the form of the uncial capital forms, but create a contemporary design that could be used in modern communications, from basic text layouts to full branding requirements. I wanted to create a style that would be evoke a historical connection but more importantly, offer a new visual solutions for designers that wished to explore outside the more traditional sans serif forms. Over the next few pages, you will be able to discover the resulting design, Vulgat. This specimen aims to show the typeface in application but also break down it s feature to display the hidden treasures in the fonts, from their languages support to the Opentype features.

4 vulgat TYPEFACE SPECIMEN styles LATIN LIGHT AN ORIGINAL TYPOGAMA TYPEFACE This typeface is available in 3 different weights, ranging from a thin light style to the darker bold weight. Each weight contains an expanded character set that covers the basic latin glyphs but equally the extended latin norms to cover languages like polish or turkish. A further extension was included that equally covers the cyrillic languages and hence, offers a great versatility in application for this typeface family. With a large set of features and glyphs, Vulgat will offer a great visual solution that is both striking and unique in style yet legible and functional for all uses, from large point sizes that reveal the finer details of each form to the smaller point sizes that plays more on the overall balance and harmony of the combined letter shapes. italic alternate cyrillic italic extended latin LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT

19 vulgat TYPEFACE SPECIMEN Page 19 SPECIMEN features Vulgat features a series of alternate letters that are, in the case of the a or e, more extreme in their approach of the unical style. I had intially questioned using these glyphs as the default set but felt that they where a bit too pronounced in style for longer text settings. They can however add a touch of flair in shorter texts like titles or logo settings. This typeface uses two seperate features that offer ligature glyphs, the first is the standard ligature forms that cover the basic ligatures found in historic ISO norms. Then the Discretionary ligatures are also used to offer a few further ligatures for the letter combinations that present certain layout issues. The final feature was to include a fully redrawn small capital set that is balanced in weight with the standard glyphs. This allows a series of explorations in text setting, from complete sections to mixing glyphs in shorter text layout. pitals

23 736 91Since vulgat TYPEFACE SPECIMEN Page 23 SPECIMEN m2 839 numbers Vulgat was conceived initially as a text based typeface, I chose to use oldstyle numerals as the default style that match the rythm of the lowercase forms. But you can equally easily switch to tabular numbers that are aligned to the capitals if you are setting in capitals or need aligned figures. The third solution is automacially applied with the small capitals feature and will offer numbers that are tabular, but aligned to the lowercase x height. This typeface also features a Fraction feature that will allow automatic creation of any number of fractions. Rather than scale the tabular numbers, our feature uses redrawn figures that are balanced in weight with the letters. You can also set any series of scientific formulas by activating the exponential numbers.
