Section I: Model 504, GENERAL INTERFACING NOTES The results from the ESR-Auto Plus can be transmitted to a host computer via the RS-232 COM PORT located on the back of the ESR-Auto Plus (COM 1). This is a unidirectional transmission of data and consists of ASCII characters, which is the same data that is sent to the internal printer. 7 2. DATE AND TIME FORMATS Refer to ESR-Auto Plus Operators Manual for instructions on how to change date and time formats in the ESR-Auto Plus. DATE FORMATS EXAMPLE YYMMDD YYYY-MM-DD YY-MM-DD MMDDYY MM-DD-YYYY MM-DD-YY TIME FORMATS EXAMPLE HH:MM (24 HOUR) 15:30 H:MM (12 HOUR) 3:30p 2
3. DECODING ERROR AND STATUS CODES To decode an alarm error code or status code, identify the largest value equal to or smaller than code reported. Subtract that value from the error code reported. Continue the same process until you reach 0. Each binary value subtracted from the original number is an error message that applies to the sample. EXAMPLES: Note: Refer to table on page 4 for binary values and assignments. Status codes are figured in the same manner as error codes. If a code matches the code from the table then the error is the matching binary value. Example 1 Reported error code = 1048 The largest binary value less than or equal to 1048 is 1024 (Sample Overfilled Error). Therefore, 1024 is subtracted from 1048 to get =24 Since 0 has not been reached, the next closest binary number to 24, without exceeding 24, must be subtracted. Therefore, 16 (No ID Code Error) is subtracted from 24 to get =8 Since 0 has not been reached, the next closest binary number to 8, without exceeding 8, must be subtracted. Therefore, 8 (Out of Range Error) is subtracted from 8 to get =0 Since 3 error codes were subtracted from the original reported value, all 3 error codes, (Sample Overfill, No ID code Error and Out of Range Error) are associated with the sample. Example 2 Reported error code = 264 The largest binary value less than or equal to 264 is 256 (Timing Error). Therefore, 256 is subtracted from 264 to get =8 Since 0 has not been reached, the next closest binary number to 8 without exceeding 8, must be subtracted. Therefore, 8 (Out of Range Error) is subtracted from 8 to get =0 Since 2 error codes were subtracted from the original reported value, both error codes (Timing Error and Out of Range Error) would be associated with the sample error. 3

The Auto Print selection in the User configuration must also be turned on for transmission of data to take place. Note: Results will vary for each ESR result (i.e. ESR: 1 MM WESTERGREN(QM PAED TUBE ). The sample transmission below has actual ESR results from 1 to 4, however, the reportable range of the instrument is only If the reading is above the reportable range a result of >120 will be reported. Note: The patient ID section of the ticket style transmission can have a maximum of 13 characters both numerical and alphabetical. 15 5.2 TICKET STYLE ERROR TRANSMISSIONS: Note: The ESR-Auto Plus will transmit Overfill/Label Interference, Low Fill and other error warnings prior to the sample result transmission. This error warning will occur immediately after the sample is scanned. The greater than 120 error will occur when all of the sample results are transmitted. An alarm warning will print at the bottom of all sample results with errors, along with an explanation of which alarm warning occurred. There is also an error warning printed in the error or status section of the sample result, which gives the error warning in binary form. Refer to page 3-4 for decoding errors and binary value assignments for error alarms. 86 18. LIS CONNECTIVITY TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE 18.1 OVERVIEW The purpose of this Troubleshooting Guide is to provide guidance to customers in the diagnosis and correction of connectivity issues related to the ESR-Auto Plus instrument and LIS Converter. The ESR-Auto Plus Model 506 transfers uni-directional data via USB to the ESR LIS Converter. The Streck ESR LIS Converter is designed to connect an ESR instrument to certified IEC equipment, typically a network or a Laboratory Information System (LIS), via Ethernet or Serial interface. Systems Architecture: Streck ESR Auto Plus, Model 506 with LIS Converter Other connection configuration as determined by customer linkage between Interface Box and LIS. 9 Pin Serial USB Ethernet Figure
18.2 GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION If the equipment is connected as outlined in Figure 18.1 but there is no connectivity to the LIS Converter please confirm the following: The ESR-Auto Plus is powered on. LIS/Putty connections will be refused if the LIS Converter is not connected to the ESR-Auto Plus. The ESR-Auto Plus and LIS Converter were connected in accordance with the specific steps outlined in the ESR LIS Converter IFU. The LIS Converter must fully boot (approx. 60 seconds) before connecting the ESR-Auto Plus. If utilizing the Ethernet connection, the LIS Converter was programmed with a static IP address or a DHCP reservation has been created. If utilizing the 9-Pin Serial connection, the LIS/Putty connection uses the following parameters: o Serial line: Proper COM port (usually COM 1) o Speed (baud): 9600 o Data bits: 8 o Stop bits: 1 o Parity: None o Flow control: None 82
18.3 ESR LIS CONVERTER TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS The following steps should be performed to ensure ESR LIS Converter connectivity based on the connection type. Connection Type: Serial In order to test the Serial connection on the ESR LIS Converter a workstation (computer/laptop) with a 9-pin serial connection and Putty installed, is required. Perform the following steps: 1. Make sure the ESR LIS Converter is not connected to the ESR-Auto Plus. 2. Power on the ESR LIS Converter. After waiting for the converter to fully boot (at least 60 seconds) connect and power on the ESR-Auto Plus. 3. Connect the ESR LIS Converter to the workstation using a 9-Pin serial cable. 4. Open Putty and configure the Serial connection with the proper parameters. 5. Initiate a print out of data from the ESR-Auto Plus. The data printed on the ticket should also display in the Putty window similar to Figure If no data is displayed in the Putty window power cycle the ESR-Auto Plus and attempt the test again. If this step fails, proceed to the ESR-Auto Plus Troubleshooting Steps. Figure 18.2 Connection Type: Ethernet In order to test the Ethernet connection on the ESR LIS Converter a network-connected workstation (computer/laptop) with Putty installed, is required. Perform the following steps: 1. Confirm the IP address of the ESR LIS Converter. This may require input from your Network Administrator. 2. Make sure the ESR LIS Converter is not connected to the ESR-Auto Plus. 3. Power on the ESR LIS Converter. After waiting for the converter to fully boot (at least 60 seconds) connect and power on the ESR-Auto Plus. 4. Connect the ESR LIS Converter to the network using an Ethernet cable. 5. Open a command prompt window on the workstation and attempt to ping the IP address of the ESR LIS Converter. You should receive a response similar to Figure If this step fails, contact Streck Technical Service. 6. Open Putty and configure the Telnet connection as shown in Figure Click the Open button. 83
7. If you receive an error message or the Putty window immediately closes, power cycle the ESR-Auto Plus and attempt to open Putty again. If this step fails, proceed to the ESR-Auto Plus Troubleshooting Steps. 8. Initiate a print out of data from the ESR-Auto Plus. The data printed on the ticket should also display in the Putty window similar to Figure If no data is displayed in the Putty window power cycle the ESR-Auto Plus and attempt the test again. If this step fails, contact Streck Technical Service. Figure 18.3 Figure
