Information Retrieval Chap 8. Inverted Files
Issues of Term-Document Matrix 500K x 1M matrix has half-a-trillion 0 s and 1 s Usually, no more than one billion 1 s Matrix is extremely sparse 2
Inverted File (term doc#:term freq) index terms computer retrieval Dj, tfj D1:9 D348:20 D350:1.. D1:6 D127:8 D345:12.. The second component of an inverted list is the term frequency (TF) information based on which a weight can computed Term frequency (TF): Number of times that a term appears in a document Document frequency (DF): Number of documents containing a term 3
Inverted Files with Term Weighting Term weighting information is often stored with the inverted file structures. Index file can be implemented as a hash file, a sorted list, or a B-tree. Q = term 1, term 2, term 3,... index terms information 4 computer 3 database 1. retrieval 3 index file df D1, 5 D1, 9 D1, 3 D1, 6 Dj, tfj inverted lists 4
Advantages of Inverted File Fast retrieval Flexible: different kinds of information can be stored Support complex retrieval operations if enough information is stored Easy to develop 5
Disadvantages of Inverted File Large storage overhead (50%-150%) High maintenance costs on updates, insertions and deletions Processing cost increases with the number of Boolean operator 6
Postings Data Structures Basic Refined 7
STAIRS Posting Information 8
Term Extraction Documents are parsed to extract words and these are saved with the Document ID. Doc 1 I did enact Julius Caesar I was killed i' the Capitol; Brutus killed me. Doc 2 So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious Term Doc # I 1 did 1 enact 1 julius 1 caesar 1 I 1 was 1 killed 1 i' 1 the 1 capitol 1 brutus 1 killed 1 me 1 so 2 let 2 it 2 be 2 with 2 caesar 2 the 2 noble 2 brutus 2 hath 2 told 2 you 2 caesar 2 was 2 ambitious 2 9
Term Sorting After all documents have been parsed the inverted file is sorted by terms Term Doc # I 1 did 1 enact 1 julius 1 caesar 1 I 1 was 1 killed 1 i' 1 the 1 capitol 1 brutus 1 killed 1 me 1 so 2 let 2 it 2 be 2 with 2 caesar 2 the 2 noble 2 brutus 2 hath 2 told 2 you 2 caesar 2 was 2 ambitious 2 Term Doc # ambitious 2 be 2 brutus 1 brutus 2 capitol 1 caesar 1 caesar 2 caesar 2 did 1 enact 1 hath 1 I 1 I 1 i' 1 it 2 julius 1 killed 1 killed 1 let 2 me 1 noble 2 so 2 the 1 the 2 told 2 you 2 was 1 was 2 with 2 10
Term Frequency Multiple term entries in a single document are merged and frequency information added Term Doc # ambitious 2 be 2 brutus 1 brutus 2 capitol 1 caesar 1 caesar 2 caesar 2 did 1 enact 1 hath 1 I 1 I 1 i' 1 it 2 julius 1 killed 1 killed 1 let 2 me 1 noble 2 so 2 the 1 the 2 told 2 you 2 was 1 was 2 with 2 Term Doc # Freq ambitious be brutus brutus capitol caesar caesar 2 2 did enact hath I 1 2 i' it julius killed 1 2 let me noble so the the told you was was with 11
Postings The file is split into a Dictionary and a Postings file Term Doc # Freq ambitious be brutus brutus capitol caesar caesar 2 2 did enact hath I 1 2 i' it julius killed 1 2 let me noble so the the told you was was with Term N docs Tot Freq ambitious be brutus 2 2 capitol caesar 2 3 did enact hath I 1 2 i' it julius killed 1 2 let me noble so the 2 2 told you was 2 2 with Doc # Freq
Compression Compress terms, URLs, or temporary sort files Term N docs Tot Freq ambitious be brutus 2 2 capitol caesar 2 3 did enact hath I 1 2 i' it julius killed 1 2 let me noble so the 2 2 told you was 2 2 with Doc # Freq
Two conflicting forces A term like Calpurnia occurs in maybe one doc out of a million - would like to store this pointer using log M ~ 20 bits A term like the occurs in virtually every doc, so 20 bits/pointer is too expensive Prefer 0/1 vector in this case 14
Variable encoding For Calpurnia, use ~20 bits/gap entry For the, use ~1 bit/gap entry If the average gap for a term is G, want to use ~log 2 G bits/gap entry 15
Document Vectors: Reduction Using too many words leads to a decrease in performance When classifying web pages using supervised learning methods Pazzani, Muramatsu, & Billsus 1996 Use the 100 highest-weighted words from any document Experiments agreed the optimum is between 30 and 100 Reduce words to their stems using the Porter algorithm Ignore words from a standard stop list of 571 words Calculate a TFIDF weight Normalize a web page w to be of unit length Allow comparisons between documents of different lengths Avoid over-fitting, reduce memory and communications load Balabanovic 1997 (Stanford) 16
