2 The Middle Ages (400 AD AD): A Summary Also known as the Medieval times, the Middle Ages this time period begins where the Classical Age ends, with the collapse of the Roman Empire in western Europe during the 400s AD and ends with the beginning of the Renaissance Period in the 1400s. This time period is characterized by... Often called the Dark Ages due to a lack of cultural and scientific output. Literature reflected elements of chivalry, codes of honor, and war. Lots of war. A time of war with holy crusades against the Muslim forces in Palestine and Barbarian invaders (Germanic peoples). Rise of the Scandinavian Norsemen (Vikings), the Holy Roman Empire (European Christianity), and Islam. A time of castles and fortresses. Middle Ages characteristics: Feudal System Was a political and military system Supported by a class system of kings, nobles, vassals and peasants. Middle Ages literature: Beowulf ( AD, Scandinavia) Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero, leaves home and comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes (Denmark), whose people and Great Hall are helpless under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, and Grendel's mother, he returns home and becomes king of his own people. Later, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is fatally wounded in the battle. After his death, his warriors give him a traditional funeral pyre.
