2 Device Server Introduction Enable Network Access to Your Serial Device Easy device networking with device server technology NPort device servers enable network access to traditional RS- 22/422/485 devices. A device server is a tiny computer equipped with a CPU, a real-time OS, and TCP/IP protocols for bi-directional translation of data between serial and Ethernet formats. With No restrictions on host or OS type NPort device servers, you can access, manage, and configure remote facilities and equipment from anywhere in the world over the Internet. The NPort is an IP-based solution that makes serial devices accessible over a network. Any host computer that supports the TCP/IP protocol can access the NPort's serial ports. You are no longer restricted by the need for operating system drivers or by bus slot limitations (such as ISA or PCI). Real COM/TTY drivers for existing software In addition to providing socket access, the NPort also comes with Real COM/TTY drivers to provide access to devices from a virtual COM or TTY port. 3 Total Solutions for Industrial Device Networking How the NPort Provides Network Access to Serial Devices Socket Mode TCP Server Mode TCP Server mode supports up to 4 connection requests In TCP Server mode, the serial port is assigned a unique IP:Port address on the TCP/IP network. The NPort simply waits passively for a host computer to establish a connection with the attached device. TCP Server mode supports up to 4 simultaneous connections, so multiple hosts can collect data from the same serial device at the same time. Socket Mode TCP Client Mode TCP Client mode connects up to 4 hosts at the same time In TCP Client mode, the NPort establishes a TCP connection between the attached device and a specified host computer when data is received from the attached device. After the data has been transferred, the NPort automatically closes the connection. Socket Mode UDP Mode UDP mode supports up to 4 multicasting groups In UDP mode, the attached device can exchange data simultaneously with up to 4 network destinations, and at a higher speed than with TCP communication. This mode is ideal for message display applications. Driver Mode Real COM Mode In Real COM mode, the serial port is assigned an IP:Port address and is mapped by special drivers to a host computer's local COM or TTY port. Legacy applications can then access the attached device using the local COM or TTY port without dealing with network protocols. Driver Mode RFC2217 Mode In RFC2217 mode, the serial port is assigned an IP:Port address and is mapped to a virtual COM port by RFC2217-compliant drivers. The RFC2217 protocol defines general COM port control options based on the Telnet protocol. The NPort supports any rd party driver that is RFC2217 compliant. info@moxa.com -2

4 Pair Connection Mode In Pair Connection Mode, two NPort device servers are used to transmit RS-22 signals over Ethernet, and in this way overcome the 15-meter limitation imposed by the RS-22 standard. One NPort connects to the PC's COM port, and the other NPort connects to the device. Both NPorts are either connected to each other by a crossover Ethernet cable, connected to the same LAN, or connected to a WAN. Both data and modem control signals can then be exchanged between the PC and the device over Ethernet, but DCD signals will not be transmitted. Ethernet Modem Mode In Ethernet Modem mode, the serial port is connected to a PC's COM port and behaves as if it were an attached modem. However, the data travels directly over the network rather than over phone lines. Ethernet Modem mode enables network access for legacy software that was originally designed to transmit data by modem. Reverse Telnet Mode In Reverse Telnet mode, the serial port provides a connection to a server and connections are initiated by a host over Ethernet. This is similar to TCP server mode, except Reverse Telnet mode also provides Telnet-style CR/LF conversion. Reverse Telnet mode can be used for remote console management, where the NPort is used to enable network access to the serial console ports of different equipment, such as routers, switches, or servers. By specifying the IP address and TCP port number, a host computer can access different serial devices over the Internet. For example, data from NPort 5410 s first serial port can be obtained by connecting to :4001. The IP Serial Library is a collection of Windows functions for NPort 5000 device servers. Serial command sets and common subroutines are provided. The purpose of the library is to help reduce complexity and increase efficiency when programming for serial communication over TCP/IP. For example, the IP Serial Library can be used to add new functionality to your Telnet sessions, since Telnet can only transfer data and can not monitor or configure serial line parameters. Why Use the IP Serial Library? For programmers who are familiar with serial communication, the IP Serial Library provides well-designed function calls that have the same style as MOXA s PComm Library. The IP Serial Library is amazingly simple and easy to understand. By including the library in your VB, C, or Delphi programming environment, you will be able to develop TCP/IP applications that have control of serial communication parameters. When Real COM mode is used, NPort serial device servers use two TCP ports for communication between an attached device and a host computer s Real COM driver. The two ports, a data port and a command port, provide pure data transfer without requiring encoding and decoding. With the IP Serial Library, only one port is used to communicate with a user's application, and no encoding or decoding is required.
