Abstract. In order to improve the efficiency and quality of the class attendance check, this paper proposed an attendance check system based on fingerprint recognition, frequency identification, CAN communication and Ethernet technology. The system is composed of four parts including a system sever, service terminals, fingerprint recognition nodes, and client computers. The system server finishes the works such as database management, dispatching fingerprint and system management. Service terminals will transmit the fingerprint data, identify the students and record the attendance information. Fingerprint nodes collect, process and compare the fingerprint. Users login the system through client computers to query or/and manage the attendance data. This system proposed in this paper has following features and advantages. B/S structure is adopted to realize the flexibility and convenience. The framework of central management and distributed cooperation improve the real-time performance and reliability. The method to collect fingerprint dispersedly makes it to be efficient and flexible. The distributing structure of the service terminals improves the efficiency of the communication. Multi-sensors acquiring for fingerprint are used in a single classroom to boost the system s efficiency. Introduction With the rapid development of the tertiary education in China, the enrollment scale of universities has been increasingly increased. Nearly all of the university students come from ordinary high school, who are tended to release themselves with the idea that the life in university is completely different from that in high school, when all the time for students are used to study regularly. Meanwhile, the behavior of being late, absenteeism, and leaving early for students become common because of the lack of self-discipline. Therefore, the management of curriculum attendance becomes a difficult job in universities, which will lead to the deterioration of learning attitude and study style, and even will be a potential security risk. However, it is neither effective nor efficient to use the traditional method with roll book to control the curriculum attendance. Regards to all the problems discussed above, it is significant to propose some application system based on computer technology to effectively and efficiently enhance the class attendance management. 230
2 Currently, there are three different types to solve the problem existing in the class attendance management. The first one is to use the software technology to record the result of the roll call, and publish the information through application or browser later [1, 2]. This kind of method still need time during the class to finish the roll call, and cannot avoid the behavior of fraudulent response. Another method is to use recognition technologies such as RFID, Bluetooth, GPS, two-dimension code to realize automatic roll call. In this method, it is unnecessary for the teacher to call the roll during the class time, but students also can cheat to register for some others [3-5]. In order to obtain accurate information about the class attendance, bio-identification technologies such as fingerprint, face recognition are used by several cases. Comparatively, the technology of fingerprint has the advantages of reliability and convenience, many researchers adopt fingerprint to develop system for class roll call. Currently, there are two major types of fingerprint scanner. The first one is independent, which cannot connect to the internet. Users have to use USB interface devices such as computer or flash disk to exchange information or update. Another one is internet version which can be controlled by program running on the server. The first type is suitable for small group which have only one site for recording, but not capable for class roll call which has many classroom for different groups of students. The internet version can be competent for our task, but only one scanner in a classroom could cause congestion during the scanning of fingerprint, and use multi-scanner would be expensive. The reference [6-8] proposed network systems to implement the job of roll call, which are composed of fingerprint scanners, attendance server, supervisory unit and browsers. The scanners collect the fingerprint of the students and transmit it to the server for comparison. However, the possible congestion of the internet could lead to low efficiency of the roll call. This paper proposed a new system for roll call in class based on the technology of fingerprint, in which the comparison of the fingerprint was implemented in the classroom using the data downloaded from the server on head, and the result was submitted after the roll call finished. The Principle of the System As shown in Fig.1, the attendance check system constituted of the system server, the internet terminals in classrooms, the fingerprint nodes and user computers. Figure 1. 3 (1) Fingerprint nodes. The fingerprint sensors used in the fingerprint nodes can collect the fingerprint image by using an optical sensor, generate feature code for fingerprint image by using process arithmetic, store more than 1000 fingerprint images and identify the fingerprint collected with those stored in it. There are two work modes for the fingerprint nodes including the registration of the fingerprints and the comparison during attendance check. During their first two weeks in university for registration, students go to any free classroom with their campus card to register their fingerprint by themselves as the process described in Fig. 2. From the third week, the fingerprint nodes work in the comparison mode, in which the system server download the correspondent fingerprint data into the fingerprint nodes before the class, and the internet terminals in the classroom collect the attendance information from all the fingerprint nodes and transmit them to the system server. Six fingerprint nodes are deployed in every classroom through CAN BUS to improve the efficiency of the fingerprint registration. (2) The internet terminal in the classroom The internet terminals, working in the mode of TCP server, transmit the fingerprint from the system server to fingerprint nodes and send the attendance data from fingerprint nodes to the system server. (3) The system server The system server is composed of the program of receive and dispatch for fingerprint, management, program database and the database connecter. The information including students campus card, curriculum schedule and the fingerprint features is stored in the database. The program of receive and dispatch, which runs background without program interface, searches the database in real time for the setting information, and send command to or receive data from internet terminals in every classroom one by one. Management program is based on Browser/Server framework, which releases data to users including administrator, teachers and students through internet. The database connector shares the data with other system and acquires data from other database such as academic status, teaching management and so on. (4) Users computer All kinds of users could login the management program through internet browser. The administrators enter the system to implement the work of importing curriculum schedule, setting the time for fingerprint registration, configuring the check mode, calculating the statistic information for the attendance check and the permission setting. The teachers could browse the information of the attendance check and give students the scores correspondently. The students could access to personal record and submit request to ask for leave. The Design of the System s Information Flow As shown in Fig.2, there are 10 steps for the information flow under the mode of registration. 1The administrator open the mode of registration for fingerprint through the management program; 2the management program update the setting data into the database; 3the program of receive and dispatch reads the setting information and find the classroom without course at the moment; 4the program of receive and dispatch send commands to internet terminal in the selected classroom to set its mode as registration; 5the students go to the internet terminals with their campus card to input their identify information; 6the internet terminal assign one fingerprint node through a LED display for the current 232
4 student; 7the student goes to the assigned node to register his/her fingerprint follow the instruction given by the screen on the node; 8the fingerprints collected and the correspondent feature code will be transmitted to the internet terminal after registering successfully; 9the program of receive and dispatch connects every internet terminals at a fixed time, and acquires the fingerprint and feature data with the identification of the students; 10at last, the program stores the data obtained from the internet terminals to the database. As shown in Fig.3, there are 7 steps for the information flow under the mode of comparison. 1the program of receive and dispatch scans the setting in the database, and locks the classrooms which will have course in the next time block; 2the program of receive and dispatch downloads the fingerprint feature code of the students who will have class to the internet terminal in the same classroom 20 minutes before the course; 3the internet terminal transmits the feature code to the fingerprint nodes through broadcast; 4the students go to fingerprint nodes to finish the fingerprint scan and the feedback from the nodes; 5every fingerprint nodes report the attendance check information to the internet terminal; 6the program of receive and dispatch connects to every internet terminal at a fixed time to collect the attendance check data; 7the data is written into the database. The Design of the System Hardware The hardware composition is descripted in Fig.4, which consists of the internet terminal and fingerprint nodes. In the internet terminal circuit, the controller STC12C5404 exchange data with the Ethernet module, CAN bus module and RFID module through SPI interface. The Ethernet module is used to connect with the system server. The CAN bus module is adopted to communicate with the 233
5 fingerprint nodes. The RFID module is facilitated to identify the students by the campus card during the mode of registration. The controller uses a LED display, driven by a chip of 74LS164, to assign one of the fingerprint nodes for student to register during the mode of registration. In the fingerprint node circuit, the same controller of STC12C5404 is adopted as the core chip, which exchanges data with CAN bus controller and driver through SPI interface, and gets fingerprint information from the fingerprint sensor through UART interface. The prompt message is given by a LCD circuit, which is controlled by the STC12C5404 through a serial interface. Figure 4. Principle of the Hardware Circuit. The Design of the System Software (1) The system server In the system server, the database of MySQL is used to store the fingerprint data and students data. And the program of receive and dispatch is written with the technology of socket using VB.net language. The management program is written using PHP language. Five major database tables designed in MySQL. The tables of curriculum schedule and the students are imported from current teaching management system directly. The terminal table stores the information of all the internet terminals deployed in every classroom. The statistic table has the information of the attendance check. The user s table manages the information for all kinds of users including administrators, teachers and students. (2) The software in the internet terminal After getting electricity, initializations for all the modules are implemented firstly, which set the work mode of CAN controller, assign the parameters for Ethernet circuit, and test the RFID module. Three flag variables of Flag1, Flag2 and Flag3 are used to identify the reception of data from CAN circuit, Ethernet circuit and RFID module respectively. If the value of Flag1 is true and the current mode is registration, the terminal will transmit the fingerprint data with the student s identification information to the system server. Else if the value of Flag1 is true and the current mode is comparison, the terminal will collect and store the attendance check data. If the value of Flag2 is true, the terminal will work according to the command from the system server to set flags, distribute fingerprint feature to fingerprint nodes or upload the attendance check information respectively. If the value of Flag3 is true and current mode is registration, the terminal will read the campus information and assign a fingerprint node for the student to register his/her fingerprint. 234
6 (3) The software in the fingerprint node After getting electricity, initializations for all the modules are implemented firstly, which set the work mode of CAN controller, configure the parameters for fingerprint sensor, and initialize the LCD display. Two flag variables of Flag1 and Flag2 are used to identify the work mode and the reception of data from CAN circuit. If the value of Flag1 is true, which indicates the work mode is registration, the node will hint the student to register his/her fingerprint through the LCD display. After collecting the fingerprint image successfully, the node converse the image to feature code, and then to feature module with two feature codes. The feature module and the students identification information will be sent to the system server together. Else if the value of the Flag1 is false, which means current work mode is comparison, the message for attendance check is shown in the LCD display. Summary This paper designed a kind of attendance check system based on fingerprint identification technology and internet technology, which has following features and advantages: (1) Six fingerprint nodes are deployed in every classroom, which efficiently avoid the congestion during the process of the attendance check. (2) The fingerprint features are stored in the database in the system server, which is convenient for management. And the comparison of the fingerprint is implemented in the classroom, which improves the instantaneity and reliability of the comparison among fingerprint features. (3) The work of registering the initial fingerprint is carried out in all the classrooms free from course, which boost the efficiency of the fingerprint registration.
