7 1. Introduction This document presents user information and instructions to configure and operate the Globalstar Multi-Channel Modem (MCM-4M) system. Each MCM-4M provides users with up to 28.8 kbps satellite communication capability. The units can be ganged together (cascaded) up to four at a time, raising the total communication capability to 115,200 kbps. In normal operation the MCM-4M provides a path to and from the Internet for the user s mobile platform. The user operates the remote client terminal exactly the same way as if it were connected to any other Ethernet LAN. The Multi Channel Modem System is easy to use, versatile, and dependable. When the MCM- 4M is operating normally, it provides the path to and from the Internet and operation is transparent to the user. Internet access is available in all Globalstar network data services coverage areas except those for China and Nicaragua. See Figure 1.1 for an overview of the MCM-4M System Architecture. This manual provides information on the Graphical User Interface (GUI) used to input MCM-4M configuration information and to monitor the status of the MCM-4M system. All displays and operator entries are discussed to assist the MCM-4M user with general system operations, configuration changes, status displays and status reports.
