1 Obtaining/Setting Up an Account For the Computer Labs you should use the same login as your Blackboard and MyCSUDH accounts. If anyone is unable to log into the systems, please go to the Welch Hall Open Lab in WH D160 and ask the student assistants behind the counter for help. BASIC INSTRUCTIONS NEEDED FOR CODING: I. Loading the Java SDK onto your laptop You will need to download the Java software development kit from html Select Java Downloads on the upper right under Top Downloads Select JDK under Standard Edition Select, download and install the 32 bit (if running XP) or 64 bit (if running Windows 7 or later) in 64 bits If using a Mac select that dmg file Follow the instructions for configuring the path on your PC The path name to be inserted should be: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0\bin\ 8.0 will be whatever latest version is.

2 Setting the path and variables in Windows 8 and Windows 10 Windows 10 and Windows 8 1. In Search, search for and then select: System (Control Panel) 2. Click the Advanced system settings link. 3. Click Environment Variables. In the section System Variables, find the PATH environment variable and select it. Click Edit. If the PATH environment variable does not exist, click New. 4. In the Edit System Variable (or New System Variable) window, specify the value of the PATHenvironment variable. Click OK. Close all remaining windows by clicking OK. 5. Reopen Command prompt window, and run your java code. Setting the path and variables in Windows Vista and Windows 7 1. From the Desktop, right-click the Computer icon and select Properties. If you don't have a Computer icon on your desktop, click the Start button, rightclick the Computer option in the Start menu, and select Properties. 2. Click the Advanced System Settings link in the left column. 3. In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab, then click the Environment Variables button near the bottom of that tab. 4. In the Environment Variables window (pictured below), highlight the Path variable in the "System variables" section and click the Edit button. Add or modify the path lines with the paths you want the computer to access. Each

3 different directory is separated with a semicolon as shown below. 5. C:\Program Files;C:\Winnt;C:\Winnt\System32 Note: You can edit other environment variables by highlighting the variable in the "System variables" section and clicking Edit. If you need to create a new environment variable, click New and enter the Variable name and Variable value. To view and set the path in the Windows command line, use the path command.

5 3. To Create a Java program: Step 1. Create the program in notepad++: Notepad++ Programname.java - Make the first letter a capital letter Save the program in the C:\users\yourusername\Java programs or any other convenient location Step 2. Compile the program Open the cmd window Switch to the directory where your program files are stored Cd C:\users\yourusername javac Programname.java Step 3. Run the program java Programname Below is a sample program skeleton: public class Programname public static void main (String[] args) //executable statements Note: Programname is case sensitive The class name and the file prefix are the same

Packages Packages are a mechanism for putting lots of classes together inside of a single file Many Interactive Development Environments (IDEs) such as Eclipse, NetBeans, etc. create and execute from packages In this class we will simply create a single class in a file without the need to create packages, although we will import classes from other preexisting packages We will use Notepad++ to create.java files This is all you will be able to use on exams If you use an IDE for homework and send me the packages please note that when sending the homework You can compile and run the following package: package mypack; public class ProgramName public static void main (String[] args) //executable statements You then compile and run as follows in the command window after changing to the directory where mypack is found: javac mypack/programname.java java mypack.programname
