Preface 10 PSE Pro for Java Release Notes
Release Notes PSE Pro for Java Release Notes provides information about the following topics: Windows 2008 Support11 Known Problems and Restrictions 11 Requirements for Using This Release 13 Compatibility Between ObjectStore and PSE Pro 15 Browsing and Searching HTML Documentation 16 New and Changed Features in Release This document covers Release 7.1. PSE Pro for Java Release 7.1 is targeted for JDK 1.5 and above; it is incompatible with JDK 1.4 and earlier. For information about supported platforms and any last-minute changes, see the README.htm file in the top-level directory where you installed PSE Pro. Windows 2008 Support PSE Pro 7.1 now supports the Windows 2008 operating system. Known Problems and Restrictions This section describes issues to consider concerning restrictions and known problems. See the following: Threads Are Not Being Automatically Joined to Nonglobal Sessions Transaction.checkpoint() and RETAIN_READONLY Session.of() Method Might Cause Deadlock Threads Are Not Being Automatically Joined to Nonglobal Sessions Threads that do not belong to a session are not automatically joined to a nonglobal session when they should be. Until this problem is resolved, applications cannot rely on session absorption to make a thread that accesses persistent objects join the appropriate session. As a work around, applications can explicitly join each thread to a session by calling Session.join() or using a global session. Release
Known Problems and Restrictions More specifically, API methods whose only session-implying arguments are persistent objects require that the calling thread already belong to the same session as the persistent objects. This applies to nonglobal sessions. This restriction will be lifted in a future release. The methods affected by this restriction include the following: ObjectStore.deepFetch() ObjectStore.destroy() ObjectStore.dirty() ObjectStore.evict() ObjectStore.export() ObjectStore.fetch() ObjectStore.isDestroyed() ObjectStore.isExported() ObjectStore.migrate() Persistent.deepFetch() Persistent.destroy() Persistent.dirty() Persistent.evict() Persistent.fetch() Persistent.isDestroyed() Transaction.checkpoint() and RETAIN_READONLY The Transaction.checkpoint() method releases and then obtains the database lock again during the course of the checkpoint. Therefore, if you checkpoint a transaction using the RETAIN_READONLY argument, the contents of retained objects will not reflect changes made to the database by concurrent sessions that obtained the lock during the checkpoint. This problem will be fixed in a future release. Session.of() Method Might Cause Deadlock Users of PSE Pro should be aware that the Session.of() method tries to obtain a lock on all active sessions when the argument is an array or a Java wrapper object. This might cause a deadlock under certain circumstances. This problem does not occur if the argument is an instance of com.odi.ipersistent. 12 PSE Pro for Java Release Notes
Release Notes Requirements for Using This Release This section contains topics describing the following requirements: Additions to CLASSPATH Variable Addition to PATH Variable Using the Postprocessor Additions to CLASSPATH Variable To use PSE Pro, you must set your CLASSPATH environment variable to contain The PSE Pro Release 7 pro.jar file. This allows the Java VM to locate PSE Pro. The PSE Pro Release 7 tools.jar file, which contains the.class files for the Class File Postprocessor and other development tools. Examples For example, under Solaris, you might set your CLASSPATH variable to something like the following: CLASSPATH=/opt/ODI/PSEProJ/lib/pro.jar:/opt/ODI/PSEProJ/libtools.jar Under Windows, you might set your CLASSPATH variable to something like the following: Developing Applications CLASSPATH=c:\odi\PSEProJ\lib\pro.jar;c:\odi\PSEProJ\lib\tools.jar To develop PSE Pro applications, you should add entries to the CLASSPATH variable that allow PSE Pro to find your Annotated (postprocessed).class files Original unpostprocessed.class files The order of these entries is important. You want PSE Pro to find the postprocessed.class files before it finds the unpostprocessed.class files. This ensures that when you run the program, the Java system finds the annotated class definitions rather than the unannotated definitions. Detailed instructions for doing this are in Chapter 8, Generating Persistence-Capable Classes Automatically, of the PSE Pro for Java User Guide. Running Demos To run the demos, you must add two other entries to the CLASSPATH variable. Instructions for doing this can be found in the README.htm file that is in the directory for each demo. Addition to PATH Variable Set your PATH environment variable to contain the bin directory that is in the release distribution. For example, on Solaris, this might be PATH=/usr/ucb:/usr/bin:/opt/SUNWspro/bin:/opt/ODI/bin:/opt/ODI/PSEProJ/bin On Windows, it might be PATH=c:\odi\bin;c:\odi\PSEProJ\bin;c:\winnt\system32;c:\winnt Release
Known Problems and Restrictions Using the Postprocessor The class file postprocessor is a tool for making classes persistence capable. For simple applications, it is best to postprocess all classes together. For more complex applications, you can postprocess your classes in correctly grouped batches. For the rules for grouping classes in batches, see the section Postprocessing a Batch of Files Is Important in Chapter 8, Generating Persistence-Capable Classes Automatically in the PSE Pro for Java User Guide. Failure to postprocess the correct classes together can result in problem situations that appear when you try to run the application and that are hard to diagnose. There are postprocessor options that allow you to determine the classes that are made persistence capable. 14 PSE Pro for Java Release Notes
Release Notes Compatibility Between ObjectStore and PSE Pro API Compatibility Database Compatibility You can start development of an application in PSE Pro and at a later time upgrade it to ObjectStore. This section provides information to help you plan for this transition. See the following: API Compatibility Database Compatibility Handling of Retained Objects at Start of New Transaction Is Now the Same The API to PSE Pro is a subset of the API to the ObjectStore Java interface (OSJI). Databases that you create with PSE Pro cannot be accessed by ObjectStore. Databases that you create with ObjectStore cannot be accessed by PSE Pro. Handling of Retained Objects at Start of New Transaction In previous releases, PSE Pro handled retained objects at the start of a new transaction differently as compared to the ObjectStore Java Interface (OSJI). PSE Pro has been modified so it now behaves the same way as OSJI. Now, PSE Pro hollows retained objects at the start of the next transaction, when you commit a transaction using ObjectStore.RETAIN_READONLY or ObjectStore.RETAIN_UPDATE, just like OSJI. This means that between transactions, you have access to the contents of only those persistent objects whose contents were read or modified in the immediately previous transaction. In previous releases, PSE Pro did not hollow the retained objects at the start of the next transaction. This meant that between transactions, you had access to the contents of all persistent objects whose contents were read or modified in the session, if you committed a transactions using ObjectStore.RETAIN_READONLY or ObjectStore.RETAIN_UPDATE. Release
Known Problems and Restrictions Browsing and Searching HTML Documentation The documentation for PSE Pro is available in HTML and PDF formats. Each format is described in the following topics: Using the HTML Documentation Set Using the PDF Documentation Set The HTML version of the documentation set contains a full text search feature. Using the HTML Documentation Set To open the PSE Pro documentation set on Windows platforms, select the Start Programs ObjectStore PSE Pro for Java PSE Pro Bookshelf menu item. To open the PSE Pro documentation set on UNIX platforms, open the doc/index.htm file in a browser. The full pathname for this file is typically /opt/odi/pseproj/doc/index.htm. To use the HTML version of the PSE Pro for Java documentation set, you need to have JavaScript enabled. The HTML version of the PSE Pro documentation set is tested on Internet Explorer 6.0.x, Netscape 7.0.x, and Mozilla Firefox 1.x. The documentation set cannot be displayed properly using Netscape 6.0. Using the PDF Documentation Set If you want to view the documentation set in PDF format or if you want print a hard copy of the documentation, open the PDF versions of the books that are located in the doc/pdf directory. You can also select PDF versions of the documentation by opening the doc/index.htm file in a browser. The API reference information is generated with the javadoc tool; therefore, PDF version of that information is not available. To view PDF files in Acrobat Reader, you must use Acrobat Reader 5.0 or a subsequent release. 16 PSE Pro for Java Release Notes
Release Notes New and Changed Features in Release 7.0 PSE Pro 7.0 contains the following new and changed features: License File Now Required Support for JDK 5 PSE Pro Compiled with JDK 5 PSE Pro API Additions and Changes Change in PSE Pro Database Format License File Now Required Support for JDK 5 To install and use PSE Pro 7.0, you must have a valid license file. You receive the license file when you purchase PSE Pro 7.0. During installation, the installation script prompts you for the location of the license file. Installation cannot procede without a valid license file. When PSE Pro tries to start, the process checks for a valid license file and does not start unless it finds one. You can now develop PSE Pro applications with JDK 5. The JDK 5 features you can use in a PSE Pro aplication include the following: Generics Enhanced for loop Autoboxing/unboxing Enum types Varargs Static import construct Annotations There are no new APIs as a result of PSE Pro support for JDK 1.5. However, to support generics, some existing APIs were changed in the com.odi.util collections classes. For example, the signature for the OSVector class was previously: public class OSVector; With PSE Pro 7.0, its signature is now as follows: public class OSVector<E>; As far as the compiler is concerned, nothing has changed. An application written for the previous API will run without any changes with the changed API. Information about how PSE Pro uses JDK 5 generics and enums has been added to the PSE Pro user guide, at the end of the section about storing objects. Release
Known Problems and Restrictions PSE Pro Compiled with JDK 5 PSE Pro itself is now compiled with JDK 5, including JDO. If you use JDO, and you want to use PSE Pro 7, you must move your application to JDK 5. If you cannot move your JDO application to JDK 5, then you must remain on a pre-7.0 release of PSE Pro. PSE Pro API Additions and Changes PSE Pro 7.0 includes the following API additions and changes. New Overloading for ObjectStore.destroy() Changed Signature for IPersistentHooks.preDestroyPersistent() Method Support for New Currency Type New Overloading for ObjectStore.destroy() The ObjectStore.destroy() method, which deletes persistent objects, has a new overloading that takes an enum as the second argument: public static void destroy(object object, DestroyOptions option) The value of the DestroyOptions enum can be one of the following: ASSERT_NO_DANGLING_REFERENCES When PSE Pro destroys the object, it does not leave a tombstone at the location occupied by the destroyed object. CAUTION: Specify this option only if the application is certain that there are no references to the object being destroyed. Database corruption can occur if you specify this option when there are references to the destroyed object in the database. DETECT_DANGLING_REFERENCES When PSE Pro destroys the object, it leaves a tombstone at the location of the destroyed object. If there is a reference to the destroyed object and the application tries to navigate through that reference, PSE Pro signals an exception. When the com.odi.forcetombstones property is set to true, the destroy() method always leaves a tombstone even if you specify ASSERT_NO_DANGLING_REFERENCES when you call the destroy() method. Changed Signature for IPersistentHooks.preDestroyPersistent() Method The predestroypersistent() method now requires one argument: void predestroypersistent(destroyoptions option) If you call the ObjectStore.destroy() method and you specify a DestroyOptions option, the predestroypersistent() method uses that value for its option argument. If you call the ObjectStore.destroy() method and you do not specify the DestroyOptions option, the predestroypersistent() method uses DETECT_ DANGLING_REFERENCES as the default value. If you are upgrading to 7 and your source code contains classes that implement the IPersistentHooks interface, you must modify your source code to use the new version of the predestroypersistent() method. 18 PSE Pro for Java Release Notes
Release Notes Support for New Currency Type You can now store java.util.currency objects in PSE Pro databases. Change in PSE Pro Database Format Changes in PSE Pro needed to support JDK 5 result in databases that are incompatible with earlier PSE Pro releases. You must upgrade each database that you want to use from PSE Pro 7 clients. PSE Pro includes the osjup70 utility for upgrading your database. Information about using this utility is in the PSE Pro user guide. Release
