An Introduction to SySML Ljerka Beus-Dukic University of Westminster, London, UK 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic 1 What is SySML? SysML is a graphical modelling language for Systems Engineering developed by the OMG, INCOSE, and ISO AP233 A UML profile that represents a subset of UML 2 with extensions Supports the specification, analysis, design, verification and validation of systems that include components for hardware, software, data, personnel, procedures and facilities. Is methodology and tool independent 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic 2 1
UML vs SySML 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic 3 UML 2.0 The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is used in many SEs environments; UML provides Requirements modeling Use cases bind requirements into coherent operational units Structural modeling Identifies the pieces of a system that fit together State behavioral modeling Statecharts are a founding basis for behavior in the UML Algorithmic behavioral modeling Activity diagrams are another behavioral aspect provided by the UML Performance modeling Tags and constraints may be created to model performance aspects; performance analysis tools can interpret and analyze such constraints 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic 4 2

Supports the specification, analysis, design, verification and validation of systems that may contain: Hardware, software, information, processes, personnel and facilities. Build on UML 2.0 with extensions and minor changes 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic 6 3
Systems Modeling Language (SysML) On July 6th 2006, the Object Management Group (OMG ) and INCOSE (the International Council on Systems Engineering) announced the adoption of the OMG Systems Modelling Language (OMG SysML ) as a final adopted specification. The OMG SysML specification was developed by a broad-based team including tool vendors, leading industry users, government agencies and professional organizations over a period of 3 years. 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic 7 SysML Design Philosophy SysML is meant to be compatible and consistent with the UML 2.0 Extensions are made only when the UML 2.0 is insufficient to meet the goals If you know UML 2.0, then you know 90% of SysML SysML and UML 2.0 can co-reside SysML must be an interoperable standard Supports model interchange Supports integration with ISO AP-233 systems engineering data standard 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic 8 4
SysML Extends/Subsets UML , Ljerka Beus-Dukic Source: Source: I-Logix I-Logix 9 SysML uses most UML diagrams SysML modifies Activity diagram Structure (Block diagrams) SysML adds Parametric diagram Requirements diagram Diagram frames SySML diagrams 2007, Ljerka Beus-Dukic Source: 10 Source: I-Logix I-Logix 5
