3 CUSTOM HARVEST RATES PAD N NEBRASKA 1958 By Arlen Lutz and Jack A schwege* nterest n custom rates has shown an ncrease n recent years. Many farmers have ther crops custom harvested rather than ncrease ther nvestment by ownng the machnes. n some areas of the state the shortage of labor to operate machnery has encouraged the hrng of custom operators as a substtute for hrng labor and buyng machnery. Ths year two sets of questonnares were sent to farmers to collect nformaton on custom rates. The Agrculture Economcs Department receved reples from 153 custom operators and the State-Federal Dvson of Agrculture Statstcs receved reports from 432 crop reporters throughout the state. Ths nformaton was combned to gve a more complete coverage than has been possble n prevous years. The survey taken n 1958 ndcated that the custom rates charged for performng certan operatons vared consderably from one part of the state to another. n some areas the charge for combnng s reported by the acre only whle n other areas rates are based on acreage and 2 yeld. For ths reason the survey n 1959 concentrated on harvestng machnes only and the number of questonnares was ncreased suffcently to allow reportng by crop reportng dstrcts as well as the state average. Nebraska s dvded nto 8 crop reportng dstrcts, and rates for each harvestng operaton are shown by dstrct. Rates for dryng gran are ncluded ths year for the frst tme. Lttle or no dfference n the rates for dryng corn, wheat, gran sorghum or other crops was ndcated n the survey so all crops are reported together. The most common method reported was by the bushel. The rates presented n the followng table are not necessarly the rates that should be charged; rather they are the rates that were charged n The average and most common rates found n the survey n 1958 are shown.
