3 Get Started Clicker Docs is part of a family of Clicker Apps, which develop reading and writing skills in learners of all abilities, including struggling writers, children with special needs and English language learners. Clicker Docs is a talking word processor that provides extensive support that can be quickly and easily customized for individual needs. The intelligent word predictor suggests context-relevant words, helping children to spell correctly and use more adventurous vocabulary. The Word Banks provide tabbed vocabulary support for any subject or topic. Word Banks can be created extremely easily, and a wide range of ready-made ones are available. 1

4 Work with Documents Open or Create a Document To open a Document, tap to browse your ipad, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or WebDAV, and then tap a Document to open it. Create a Document To create a new Document, tap and choose New Document. Alternatively, tap, tap and choose Document to create a new Document at the current location. Write into the Document Write into the Document using the keyboard or a Word Bank. To switch between them, tap the Show Keyboard/Grid tool. You can also use an external keyboard, such as the Apple Wireless Keyboard. Using the Keyboard Tap a key to type it in the Document. To capitalize the next letter, tap. Double-tap to keep it enabled. To delete a character, tap. To access numbers and punctuation symbols, tap. To return to letters, tap. Navigation Navigation keys appear along the bottom of the numbers keyboard. To move the cursor, tap and. To move the cursor a word at a time, tap and. To hide the keyboard, press. To bring it back, tap the Document. 2

5 Work with Documents Predictor As you type, the Predictor suggests words that you might want to use. To learn more, see Predictor. Accessibility SuperKeys is a useful feature for people who have difficulty tapping smaller targets. You can also change the keyboard layout. To learn more, see Accessibility. Text Selection To select a word in the Document, double-tap it. To select multiple words, double-tap the first one, and then drag the blue handles. To select all words, long-tap anywhere and tap Select All. With text selected, you can perform these actions: Cut - copy and remove the selection. Copy - copy the selection. Paste - replace the selection with copied text. Speak - speak the selection. To paste text into the Document that is copied from elsewhere, long-tap where you want it, and then tap Paste. To turn off text selection, see Accessibility. Send a Copy of the Document To send a copy of the Document, tap and choose Send a Copy. To send a Clicker Document, tap Clicker Document. To send a universal plain text file, tap Text File. To send a PDF, tap PDF File. Choose from the available options to send your file. Print the Document 3

6 Clicker Docs User Guide To print the Document, tap and choose Print. Tap Select Printer to choose from a list of AirPrint printers that your ipad can find on your network. Specify the number of copies you'd like and tap Print. Your ipad's orientation decides whether your Document is printed in landscape or portrait. Open as PDF To open the Document as a PDF, tap and choose Open as PDF. Choose from the available options to open the PDF. Your ipad's orientation determines whether the PDF will be landscape or portrait. Word Count To see how many words, characters, sentences and paragraphs are in your Document, tap and choose Word Count. 4

7 Writing Support Writing Support Overview Clicker Docs contains a wide variety of writing support tools that can guide and assist learners when required. These include: The latest Text-to-Speech technology by Acapela. A comprehensive, talking Spell Checker. Highly configurable word prediction. Customizable Word Banks for vocabulary support. Text-to-Speech To speak the entire Document, long-tap anywhere within it and tap Speak All. To speak sections of the Document or Word Bank, use the Tap it for single use, double tap to keep it turned on. Sound Shift tool. When Sound Shift is on: To speak a word, tap it. To speak a sentence, double-tap it. To speak a paragraph, triple-tap it. To speak the contents of a cell, tap it. If you can't hear the speech, check that your ipad is not muted via the side switch, and that the volume is set correctly. Spell Checker Clicker Docs can check the spelling of words and underline any that are misspelled with red dashes. To see suggestions for a misspelled word, tap it. Suggestions appear above the keyboard in red. Tap one to replace the misspelled word. 5

8 Clicker Docs User Guide To hear a suggestion, tap the Sound Shift tool, and then tap a suggestion. To turn the Spell Checker on/off, tap tap Spell Checker., choose Spell Checker & Predictor and Predictor As you type with the keyboard, the Predictor suggests words that you might want to use. Tap a suggested word to send it to the Document. To hear suggestions, tap the Sound Shift tool, and then tap a suggestion. Turn On and Configure To change the number and size of predictions, tap & Predictor. and choose Spell Checker Tap Predictor again to adjust these settings: Predictor - display the Predictor above the keyboard. SoundsLike Prediction - suggest words based on their phonetic sound. Predict Next Word - predict the next word after a space is typed. Database Size - choose the level of prediction. Write with a Word Bank Word Banks provide tabbed vocabulary support for any subject or topic when writing in the Document. A Word Bank contains one or more grids. Each grid contains a number of cells. The Document fills the top of the screen. The current grid fills the bottom of the screen. 6

9 Writing Support To switch between the keyboard and the Word Bank, tap the Keyboard/Grid tool. Show To add a word to the Document, tap it. Swipe the grid backwards/forwards to move to the previous/next grid, or tap the bottom tabs. Get Word Banks from LearningGrids As a Clicker Docs user, you get free access to the growing library of Word Banks on our LearningGrids site. To access these, tap left. and tap LearningGrids on the A list of recently added Word Banks is displayed. Use the top search bar to find Word Banks for your topic. To open a Word Bank, tap Run Now. Word Banks opened from LearningGrids are automatically saved in your LearningGrids Downloads folder, so you can easily use them again. You can also access LearningGrids by visiting from any web browser. Send a Copy of the Word Bank To send a copy of the Word Bank, go to Edit View, tap Copy. and choose Send a Choose from the available options to send your file. Create a Word Bank To create a new Word Bank, go to Edit View, tap Bank. and choose New Word Alternatively, tap, tap and choose Word Bank to create a new Word Bank at the current location. 9

12 Clicker Docs User Guide Edit a Word Bank To edit a Word Bank, tap to enter Edit View. A Word Bank contains one or more grids, which are listed in the left pane. To select a grid, tap it. The right pane displays the selected grid and its settings. Add Grids To add a grid, tap Add and type a name into the Grid Name box. To quickly create multiple grids, tap Add Text: To create a set of A-Z grids, tap Alphabetical Grids. To create a set of grids based on topics, tap Topic Grids. Type or Paste text, choose whether to exclude common words, and then tap Create Grids. Add words to a Grid Type or paste words into the Grid Content box. To include several words in one cell, surround them with ( ) or [ ]. Arrange Grids To arrange your grids, tap Edit: To change a grid's position in the list, drag its handle. To delete a grid, tap its icon, and then tap Delete. Tap Done to finish. Word Order To sort the words on the grid, tap one of the following: Alpha (rows) - words are sorted alphabetically by row. Alpha (columns) - words are sorted alphabetically by column. 10

13 Use, Create, and Edit Word Banks Random - words are sorted randomly each time the grid is viewed. Fixed - words are sorted in the order they were supplied. Background Color To change the grid's background, tap a color. For more colors, tap. Grid Layout To position the first cell along the top of the grid, tap Place first cell along the top. By default, cells are sorted into columns automatically. To specify the number of columns on the grid, tap Columns. Apply Settings to All Grids To apply the current grid's settings to all grids in the Word Bank, tap Apply Settings to All Grids. 11

14 Manage Documents and Word Banks File Explorer To access all the Documents and Word Banks on your ipad, tap. In Explorer: To open a Document, Word Bank or folder, tap it. To return to the previous folder, tap the back arrow. To create a new Document, Word Bank or folder, tap. You can also delete, rename, copy, and share files. Free Word Banks can be downloaded from LearningGrids. You can also connect to a Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive account, or a WebDAV file server. To enable these features, see Sharing. Backing up To keep backup copies of your files, copy them to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or WebDAV. Opening a file from any of these sources creates a new copy, keeping your backup copy intact. Delete, Rename, Copy, and Share To perform these actions on files and folders in the File Explorer, tap Edit. Tap items to select them, and then do one of the following: To delete selected items, tap Delete. To copy selected items, tap Copy. Browse to your desired location and tap Paste to copy them there. To share selected items, tap Share and choose from the available options to share your files. To rename an item, long-tap its current name. Tap Done to finish. 12

15 Manage Documents and Word Banks (It's not possible to rename or delete files directly within Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or WebDAV) Get Word Banks from LearningGrids As a Clicker Docs user, you get free access to the growing library of Word Banks on our LearningGrids site. To access these, tap left. and tap LearningGrids on the A list of recently added Word Banks is displayed. Use the top search bar to find Word Banks for your topic. To open a Word Bank, tap Run Now. Word Banks opened from LearningGrids are automatically saved in your LearningGrids Downloads folder, so you can easily use them again. You can also access LearningGrids by visiting from any web browser. Dropbox Use Dropbox to share files between ipads. To learn about Dropbox, visit To enable sharing with Dropbox, tap, choose Sharing and turn on Dropbox. To access Dropbox, tap and tap Dropbox on the left. Link Your Account To link your account, tap Link to Dropbox. Enter your account details and tap Sign in. To unlink your account, tap Edit and tap Unlink Dropbox. Add Files to Dropbox To add a file to Dropbox, first create it on your ipad, and then copy and paste it to Dropbox. Manage Dropbox files To delete or rename Dropbox files, login to Dropbox from your web browser, or use the Dropbox app on your ipad. Your files are stored in the Apps\Clicker folder (previously Apps\Clicker Docs). Google Drive Use Google Drive to share files between ipads. To learn about Google Drive, visit drive.google.com. To enable sharing with Google Drive, tap Drive., tap Sharing and turn on Google To access Google Drive, tap and tap Google Drive on the left. Link Your Account To link your account, tap Link to Google Drive. Enter your account details and tap Sign in. To unlink your account, tap Edit and tap Unlink Google Drive. Add Files to Google Drive To add a file to Google Drive, first create it on your ipad, and then copy and paste it to Google Drive. To access OneDrive, tap and tap OneDrive on the left. Link Your Account To link your account, tap Link to OneDrive. Enter your account details and tap Sign in. To unlink your account, tap Edit and tap Unlink OneDrive. Add Files to OneDrive To add a file to OneDrive, first create it on your ipad, and then copy and paste it to OneDrive. 18 Clicker Docs User Guide Use WebDAV to share files between ipads. WebDAV allows you to access files stored on your server over the Internet. Ask your network administrator to set this up and add the Clicker Docs MIME Types to the server. To enable sharing with WebDAV, tap, tap Sharing and turn on WebDAV. To access files on a WebDAV server, tap and tap WebDAV on the left. Link to WebDAV To link to a WebDAV server, tap Link to WebDAV. Enter the address of the server and your account details, and then tap. To unlink from the server, tap Edit and tap Unlink WebDAV. Add Files to WebDAV To add a file to WebDAV, first create it on your ipad, then copy and paste it to WebDAV. You can also send files to WebDAV from the menu in Edit View. menu in the toolbar and the Open Files from WebDAV To open a file from WebDAV, tap it. This copies it to the WebDAV Downloads folder on your ipad so that the file can be accessed later, even without an Internet connection. Manage WebDAV files To delete or rename WebDAV files, access your WebDAV server from elsewhere. Favorites and Recents To access a list of Word Banks that you have favorited or recently used, tap. To add the current Word Bank to your Favorites, tap Add. To remove a Word Bank from Favorites, tap Edit, tap its Delete. icon, and then tap To view Recents, switch to the Recents section. 16

19 Customize Settings Document To adjust these settings for all Documents, tap and choose Document: Font - choose a font style from the list. Font Size - drag the slider bar to change font size. Background Color - choose the color of the Document. Text Color - choose the color of the text. Speech To adjust these settings, tap and choose Speech: Voice - choose which voice to use. Speed - choose how quickly the voice reads text. Highlight Color - choose which color is used to highlight words as they are spoken. Speak Each Letter - letters are spoken when typed or sent to the Document. Speak Each Word - words are spoken when typed or sent to the Document. Speak Each Sentence - the current sentence is spoken when completed with punctuation. Spell Checker & Predictor To adjust these settings, tap and choose Spell Checker & Predictor: Spell Checker - identifies misspelled words and suggests corrections. To learn more, see Spell Checker. Predictor - suggests words as you type. To learn more, see Predictor. Display - choose the number and size of suggestions. Sharing 17

20 Clicker Docs User Guide To adjust these settings, tap and choose Sharing: Dropbox - enables the Dropbox section of the File Explorer. Google Drive - enables the Google Drive section of the File Explorer. OneDrive - enables the OneDrive section of the File Explorer. WebDAV - enables the WebDAV section of the File Explorer. Accessibility To adjust these settings, tap and choose Accessibility: SuperKeys - helps learners who have difficulty selecting smaller targets. It works by grouping cells into clusters. Selecting a cluster enlarges it, making it easy to select a cell inside. Close Cluster After Selection - turn this off to keep the cluster enlarged after selecting a cell. Delay Before Closing - after selecting a cell, wait X seconds before the cluster closes. Keyboard Layout - choose the keyboard layout. Autorepeat Delete - when turned on, pressing Delete will keep deleting until you let go. Swipe Grids - turn this off to prevent swiping between grids. Instead, tap the arrows in the bottom corners to move between grids. Show Touches - when turned on, a red circle appears where a touch occurs. Text Selection - turn this off to prevent selecting text. Enlarge When Tapped - when turned on, cells briefly expand to indicate when they're tapped. Display Settings For learners with low vision, you can adjust the fonts and colors used in Documents. To learn more, see Document. Guided Access 18

21 Customize Settings Use your ipad's Guided Access feature to temporarily prevent switching to other apps and restrict access to parts of Clicker Docs (such as Settings or the File Explorer). To turn on Guided Access, open your ipad's Settings app, tap General on the left, tap Accessibility on the right, and turn on Guided Access. To learn more, see: support.apple.com/ht Switch Control Use your ipad's Switch Control feature to control Clicker Docs with switches. To configure Switch Control, open your ipad's Settings app, tap General on the left, tap Accessibility on the right, and then tap Switch Control. To learn more, see: support.apple.com/ht Set Language To change the language options for Clicker Docs, open your ipad's app and tap Clicker Docs on the left. Settings To set the language of the user interface, tap Language. To set your region, tap Resources. This determines which resources appear on LearningGrids and in the Examples folder. (Changing the language does not automatically change the voice. To do this, see Speech.) 19
