GeoEnviron 4.2 Introduction Introduction Development of the GeoEnviron Program Development of the GeoEnviron Environmental Data Management System began in Since then the system has been improved significantly. Today, we offer the system with 15 different modules, broadly designed for the registration and management of various types of environmental data. The development of the integration with ArcGIS adds another link to the chain of possibilities the system offers. The Manual and its Application The GeoEnviron/ArcGIS integration manuals are in three parts: Installation Guide Setup Guide User Guide This manual is the User Guide and covers the GeoEnviron-ArcGIS integration software, which is used to integrate GeoEnviron with the GIS program ArcView 8.x. Geokon, April by Erik Sten Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Introduction to the ArcGIS Integration Introduction to the ArcGIS Integration This chapter introduces you to the GeoEnviron-ArcGIS integration. History and Application Area of the Integration The first version of the GeoEnviron-ArcView integration was developed and released late in Since then the program has been further developed, adjusted, and improved to support the new modules added to the GeoEnviron Environmental Management Database since then. The first version of the integration made it possible to work with data from the GeoEnviron database in ArcView 3.x. Records in the database could be registered as points in the GeoEnviron database and were displayed in ArcView as a theme by direct interaction between ArcView and the GeoEnviron database. The second version of the GeoEnviron integration to ArcView 3.x could operate with points and polygons, but was unable to utilise polylines. Shapefile based polygon themes could be created and polygons inserted into these using the integration. The polygons were linked to GeoEnviron objects by registration/transfer of attribute values. Polygon coordinates were not registered in the GeoEnviron database. When upgrading to ArcView 8.x (ArcGIS) such polygon themes can no longer be used. The ArcGIS/GeoEnviron integration expects that coordinates of points, lines, and polygons are placed in the GeoEnviron database, and creates the geography of these objects in a geodatabase. It is not possible to create a link between shapefiles with polygons and the GeoEnviron database using the new integration software. Records in the geodatabase may be displayed as point objects in map layers (themes) in ArcMap. Sites, surveys, and remediation projects may also be displayed as polygons or polylines in map layers. However, individual records in the GeoEnviron database may only be inserted once on any map. Multiple layers can be created to display various types of records in different projections. Layers may be edited by moving objects, new objects may be inserted or a link to a GeoEnviron record may be removed. Changes are automatically saved to the GeoEnviron database. A record may be looked up in the database by clicking on a GeoEnviron linked object in a map layer in ArcMap. The specific record will then be retrieved in GeoEnviron. In a map layer you may also search for and retrieve GeoEnviron objects that fall within or cut a search area formed as a circle or polygon and an optional buffer zone around the search area. The records found are listed in a GeoEnviron overview window from where individual records may be retrieved. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Introduction to the ArcGIS Integration When records have been searched for and retrieved in GeoEnviron the result of the search may be transfered to ArcMap in order to display the positions of the objects on a map. A selection of GeoEnviron objects may be copied from an ArcMap map layer to a shapefile that will also include the object s attribute data. ArcGIS may be integrated to multiple copies of the GeoEnviron database. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar This chapter covers the use of the functionality available via the GeoEnviron integration toolbar within ArcMap. When the ArcGIS integration is installed and set up, a moveable GeoEnviron toolbar appears automatically whenever ArcMap is opened up. Most functions are placed in the toolbar under the GeoEnviron menu from where they can be activated. The function Get GeoEnviron themes is activated from a button on the toolbar. All functions can be activated even when the GeoEnviron program is not running. Database Login Before you can retrieve data from the GeoEnviron database for the first time in each session, you will need to log onto the database by providing a User ID and Password in the ODBC control dialog. Please Note! If the dialog window Select Data Source does NOT appear, you just skip this paragraph. Firstly, select the ODBC datasource from the list in the Select data Source dialog. Select the relevant data source from the Machine Data Source tab and click OK: Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar After clicking OK, the ODBC control dialog should appear. Insert your User ID and Password. For a Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere database user ID and password should be inserted into the Login tab: Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar For a Microsoft SQL Server database user ID and password should be inserted into the SQL Server Login window as shown below. Uncheck the Use Trusted Connection checkbox to be able to insert login ID and password. These steps need only be taken once in each session as the link to the database is maintained until ArcMap is closed. Database Administration When the Database Administration function is activated a dialog window opens displaying the previously saved database settings. In this dialog you can: Select an ODBC data source (GeoEnviron database) Select or create a geodatabase Save database settings For a detailed description of the Database Administration dialog window we refer to the ArcGIS Integration Setup Guide and the chapter: Setting up the Integration with a Datasource. The program accepts only geodatabases that are generated by use of the New GeoDB function, since the geodatabase needs to be compatible with the GeoEnviron database. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar Map Layer Administration Maps layers are divided into two categories; layers that contain GeoEnviron objects and layers that don t. Layers that contain GeoEnviron objects appear and are controlled using the Layers drop down listbox on the toolbar. Ordinary layers are not listed in this listbox. Furthermore feature classes will only appear in this listbox if they are registered with that ODBC datasource that is used to connect to the active GeoEnviron database. Feature classes containing GeoEnviron linked objects are stored within a personal geodatabase that must be created using the GeoEnviron/ArcGIS integration. The geodatabase s data structure makes it possible to link map layers to the GeoEnviron database. Activating the function Map layer administration in the GeoEnviron menu opens a list of all feature classes within the active geodatabase that can be displayed as map layers in ArcMap. The list specifies the ODBC datasource, coordinate system, and object type for each GeoEnviron linked layer. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar After selecting a map layer, by clicking on the map layer name, the following may be changed: the name of the ODBC datasource that links this map layer to the GeoEnviron database the GeoEnviron coordinate system (map sheet) used by the map layer the object type contained in the map layer the linkage/association between the map layer and the GeoEnviron database - which may be removed with the Remove link... button Any changes are registered using the map layers list by activating the Update button. WARNING! Do not alter ODBC datasources, object types or coordinate systems for GeoEnviron layers that have been created using an earlier datasource. After changing the map layers link from one GeoEnviron database to another, the keys for the map layer objects and for the database will no longer match each other which will cause the ArcGIS/GeoEnviron integration to malfunction. Changing the object type or coordinate system of a map layer will also result in malfunctioning of the ArcGIS/GeoEnviron integration. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar Get GeoEnviron Themes The Get GeoEnviron themes function is activated by clicking on this icon on the GeoEnviron toolbar. The Get GeoEnviron themes dialog window opens. The window looks as shown in the figure below the first time it is opened : On subsequent occasions the fields contain the data entered the last time the dialog was opened and saved. This function is used to create or refresh integrated layers in ArcMap based on the content of the GeoEnviron database. The function reads in information on linked objects from the GeoEnviron database and generates feature classes in the geodatabase using this information. Each of the object types Sites, Stations, Surveys, and Streams can be registered as points, polylines, or polygons. The object types Boreholes and Samples can be registered as points only. All in all it is possible to create 14 feature classes. The object type Sites contains different types of sites such as contaminated land, industrial sites, storage tanks etc. The object type Surveys contains both surveys and remediation projects. The object types Stations and Streams relate to recipients. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar If the GeoEnviron database already contains features with map coordinates then these can be mapped immediately into ArcGIS using the Get GeoEnviron themes function. If the GeoEnviron database contains no features with map coordinates then this function creates new feature classes in the geodatabase, registers these as GeoEnviron themes and adds an empty map layer to the data frame for each feature class. Please Note! When GeoEnviron-liked map layers are added in ArcMap by the Get GeoEnviron themes function, any existing map layers with the same name are not removed from the data frame. It is therefore recommended to remove existing GeoEnviron linked map layers from the data frame before the Get GeoEnviron themes function is activated. A map layer may be removed from the data frame by right-clicking on the layer in the table of contents and selecting Remove. Selecting GeoEnviron Coordinate System Firstly, you select a GeoEnviron coordinate system (mapsheet) from the drop down listbox in the topmost field. The list contains all coordinate systems that are registered in the GeoEnviron database. Some often used coordinate systems are already inserted into GeoEnviron. A GeoEnviron coordinate system is a code the database uses to identify the ArcMap feature class (and its geographical coordinate system) that the GeoEnviron objects should be linked to. Selecting a Dataset In the next data field, you can select the dataset you wish to use from a drop down list menu. If you are using the geodatabase created by Geokon (i.e. GeoDB_AG_GE_v101.mdb), and it contains multiple datasets, then select the dataset whose name corresponds to the selected GeoEnviron coordinate system. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar Completing the 'Ordering of New Feature Classes' Data Window New feature classes can be generated for a single object type or a combination of object types (Sites, Stations, Surveys, Streams, Boreholes, or Samples) and the feature types: points, polylines, and polygons. The feature classes to be generated are selected using the check boxes next to feature class name fields. The first time this dialog window is opened no feature class check boxes are checked. A name should be given for each feature class that is checked. If an existing name is selected from the dropdown listbox, then the existing feature class will be overwritten. You must confirm before a feature class is overwritten if you uncheck the check box: Overwrite existing feature classes if any in the geodatabase without further warnings. Any Z-coordinates (level/height above sea level) for GeoEnviron linked features can be transferred to the geodatabase by checking the check box: Use levelling data if any for creation of feature classes in 3D. To display feature classes in 3D the ArcGIS extension 3D Analyst is needed. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar Ordering New Feature Classes When all the relevant fields in the Get GeoEnviron themes dialog window have been filled in and checked, then click the OK button. For each feature class, information on the GeoEnviron database mapped objects is generated and placed in the geodatabase. Please Note! This proces may take a few minutes depending on how many GeoEnviron objects with map coordinates the database holds. The number of mapped objects in the GeoEnviron database is displayed below the feature class name field. The current status of the process is shown in the status bar on the bottom left hand side of the program window. When the process is completed, the following message dialog box appears: Closing the 'Get GeoEnviron Themes' Dialog Window Finally you close the Get GeoEnviron themes dialog window. Please Note! The dialog window is closed with the Close button. If you click the OK button, then feature classes with GeoEnviron linked objects are created again. This happens without warning if you have unchecked the check box: Overwrite existing feature classes if any in the geodatabase without further warnings. Adding GeoEnviron Themes as Map Layers Map layers containing GeoEnviron linked objects are automatically added to the data frame when feature classes are generated or refreshed. When the feature classes are added to the data frame, or a map containing these feature classes is opened, the feature classes will appear in the Layers drop down list box in the ArcGIS/GeoEnviron toolbar. In the table of contents map layers are listed in a particular order. Point layers occur first, followed by polyline layers, polygon layers, and at last the background map layer. The display order of map layers may be Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar changed by selecting a layer in the table of contents and dragging the layer using the mouse to its new position. Please Note! When a layer is refreshed, a new instance of it is created and the pre-existing layer is not automatically removed from the data frame. The new map layer is always placed above the pre-existing map layer in the table of contents. Therefore always remove the lowermost of the two layer versions. This is done by right-clicking on the map layer in the table of contents and selecting Remove. Convert Selection to Shapefile This menu function can be activated whenever features are selected on the active theme. On clicking on this button, a save file dialog is opened in which you can select the name and location of the new shapefile (*.shp). The new shapefile will contain all the attributes (Id, Type etc.) of the feature class. Ping GeoEnviron Activating this menu function causes the integration program to check to see if the GeoEnviron program is running and report the result back to ArcGIS. This function can be used to check if GeoEnviron is ready for retrieval of objects from the map using e.g. the tool Retrieve in GeoEnviron. Online Help This menu function opens up the online help for the integration. It contains a brief description of the ArcGIS/GeoEnviron extension and its functions and tools. The online help may also be activated by clicking the Help button in certain dialog windows. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Tools on the GeoEnviron Toolbar Tools on the GeoEnviron Toolbar The ArcGIS integration adds a GeoEnviron toolbar in ArcMap with facilities that require an interaction with the user interface in order to be activated. These four tools are used to edit integrated map layers (see next chapter): New GeoEnviron object This tool is used to add a new GeoEnviron linked object on the active map layer. Identify existing feature This tool is used to link an existing non GeoEnviron linked feature to the GeoEnviron database. Move GeoEnviron object This tool is used to move a GeoEnviron object on the active layer to another location on the map. Delete identification Clicking on a GeoEnviron linked object with this tool causes the object s coordinates to be deleted from the GeoEnviron database. The following three tools are used to retrieve GeoEnviron objects (see the chapter Communicating with GeoEnviron). The tools work only if the GeoEnviron program is running. Retrieve in GeoEnviron Clicking on a GeoEnviron object on the active theme using this tool will cause the GeoEnviron program to be made active whilst at the same time displaying information on the selected object. Buffer search around a polygon This tool is used to select GeoEnviron objects on the active layer by drawing a polygon on the map and specifying a buffer size numerically. The objects that fall within or cut the buffer zone are then searched for and retrieved in the GeoEnviron database. Buffer search around a circle This tool is used to select GeoEnviron objects on the active layer by drawing a circle on the map and specifying a buffer size numerically. The objects that fall within or cut the buffer zone are then searched for and retrieved in the GeoEnviron database. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Editing Integrated Map Layers Editing Integrated Map Layers This chapter covers the editing of GeoEnviron integrated map layers in ArcMap. An integrated map layer can be edited in several ways. GeoEnviron linked map features may be added or moved. Map coordinates for a GeoEnviron linked object can be removed from the database, the object can then be reshaped, linked again, or deleted. Each line and polygon possesses a centroid. Centroids are registered in the database and in the feature class with point features of this object type. Lines/polygons and their centroids are inseparable. Please Note! When an integrated map layer has been edited, the GeoEnviron theme must be refreshed based on data in the database using the function Get GeoEnviron themes. This function is described earlier in this manual in the chapter: Functions on the GeoEnviron Toolbar. Drawing a New Feature and Linking it to GeoEnviron The New GeoEnviron object tool is used to draw a new feature on the map and link it to an object in the GeoEnviron database. The tool automatically draws features that have the same geometry type, points, polylines, or polygons, as the active feature class (i.e. the feature class that is currently selected in the Layers field on the GeoEnviron toolbar). After a new feature has been added to the map, a dialog listing all nonlinked objects in the GeoEnviron database is displayed. Please Note! A record in the GeoEnviron database can be mapped only once; i.e. either as point, polyline+centroid, or polygon+ centroid. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Editing Integrated Map Layers The list may be searched for a specific textstring. Type a search criteria into the Find field, then click the Find button. The first record which matches the search criteria will be highlighted. Any other records that match this search criteria can then be located one at a time using the same button (which changes its name to Next). Please Note! A GeoEnviron record s identification can be copied (using Ctrl+C) from the Id field in the Registration Casement of a GeoEnviron module and inserted (using Ctrl+V) into the Find field in the Identify feature dialog. When clicking the Find button, this GeoEnviron record is highlighted in the dialog list. Selecting one of these records from the list and clicking OK (or double clicking on the record) causes it to be linked to the feature just drawn. Attribute data (Id, Type etc.) for a feature that is newly linked to GeoEnviron will not be displayed in the map before the map layer is refreshed from the GeoEnviron database. It is recommended to draw and link a number of features on the map, and then refresh the map layer. Linking an Existing Feature to GeoEnviron A non GeoEnviron linked map feature can be linked to a record in the GeoEnviron database using the Identify existing feature tool. Activating this tool and clicking on a non linked feature on the active map layer, opens a dialog window with a list of all non identified records of the same object type in the GeoEnviron database. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Editing Integrated Map Layers Please Note! A record in the GeoEnviron database can be mapped only once; i.e. either as point, polyline+centerpoint, or polygon+ centerpoint. The list may be searched for a specific text string. Type your search criteria into the Find field and click the Find button. The first record matching the search criteria will be highlighted. If there are multiple records that match the search criteria, the label text on the Find button changes to Next. Subsequent records can then be located one at a time clicking this button. Please Note! A GeoEnviron record s Site ID can be copied (using Ctrl+C) from the Site ID field in the Registration Casement of a GeoEnviron module and inserted (using Ctrl+V) into the Find field in the Identify feature dialog. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Editing Integrated Map Layers Moving a GeoEnviron Linked Feature With the Move GeoEnviron object tool a GeoEnviron linked feature on the active map layer can be moved using the mouse. The active map layer is selected in the Layers field on the GeoEnviron toolbar. Activate the tool, click on the object and move the object with the left mouse button down. The object is redrawn on the map when you release the mouse button. The object s new map coordinates are automatically updated in the GeoEnviron database. Editing a GeoEnviron Linked Feature A GeoEnviron linked polygon or polyline can not be edited until its link to GeoEnviron has been removed with the Delete identification tool. Make a note of the object s GeoEnviron identification before unlinking the object. When the link to GeoEnviron has been removed, the feature may be edited by starting the Editing function on the Editor toolbar, selecting the feature on the map and using the editing functions on the toolbar. Once edits are completed, the editing is stopped on the Editor tool bar and edits are saved. The feature may now be linked again to a record in the GeoEnviron database using the Identify existing feature tool. Unlinking a Feature from GeoEnviron If a feature on the map has been erroneously linked to a GeoEnviron object, or if the feature needs to be edited, its association with the GeoEnviron object can be removed using the Delete identification tool. Remember to select the active map layer in the Layers list field on the GeoEnviron toolbar. Then select this tool and click on a GeoEnviron linked feature on the active map layer. Deleting the feature s association with the GeoEnviron database also deletes the feature s map coordinates from the database. The feature may now be edited and linked once again to a GeoEnviron object using the Identify existing feature tool. When a feature s association with a GeoEnviron object has been removed, the feature s attribute data (Id, Type etc.) is not deleted from the attribute table until the map layer has been refreshed. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Drawing Features to Show Categories Drawing Features to Show Categories It is possible to use different facilities in ArcMap to display data from GeoEnviron on an integrated map layer in a way that shows you not only where features are positioned but also what category they belong to. This chapter describes how to draw features to show categories. The Basics The attribute table of an integrated layer with Sites contains the type of individual sites. Thus it is possible to make a distinction based on type in ArcMap, displaying different site types with an individual symbol and color. The following instruction tells you how to do this in ArcMap (- a similar displaying of type can be done with Stations, Surveys, Streams, Boreholes, and Samples). Drawing Features to Show Site Type Categories In the map s table of contents you right-click on a map layer containing sites. Select the Properties menu. If the map s table of contents is not displayed, it can be added from the View Table Of Contents menu. In the Layer Properties dialog window that opens up, activate the tab Symbology. Click Categories and then click Unique Values as illustrated below: Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Drawing Features to Show Categories To change the symbol click on the Symbol tab and select Properties for All Symbols. Choose a new symbol in the window that opens. When clicking OK in this window you return to the Layer Properties dialog window. Select from the Value Field dropdown listbox the field named Type. Then click the Add All Values button beneath the list. The window now shows different site types in different colors and with the selected symbol: If you want to change the colors that the site types are displayed with, click on a color in the Color Scheme field. Please notice, that colors are changed for all site types. Click OK to close the dialog window. Save the map with its present settings as an ArcMap document (*.mxd) in the File Save As menu. The map s table of contents now contains different symbols for the different site types that are displayed on the map: Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Drawing Features to Show Categories When features are drawn to show site type categories your map may look similar to this in ArcMap. Please Note! When sites are categorised by type and you insert a new site (e.g. a comtaminated land site) on the map, this site is NOT immediately displayed with the symbol color of the Contaminated Land site type. Instead the site is displayed with the symbol color of <all other values>. In the map shown above a newly inserted site will be symbolised with a black filled circle. The next time you refresh this GeoEnviron theme, the site type for new GeoEnviron objects will be transferred from the database to the attribute table, and the site will be displayed with the symbol color of the site type. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Communicating with GeoEnviron Communicating with GeoEnviron Communication between GeoEnviron and ArcGIS occurs using DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) which works only when the integration is installed and GeoEnviron is running. When the connection between the two programs is established, ArcView is automatically attached to a window group in GeoEnviron. The attachment to a window group follows certain rules. If ArcView is already running when GeoEnviron is started, a message from GeoEnviron will inform you that objects will be sent to window group 1. GeoEnviron does not continue opening until you click OK. If GeoEnviron is running when ArcView is started, then ArcView is attached to the same window group as the active window in GeoEnviron belongs to. The user gets no message from GeoEnviron telling which window group ArcView objects are sent to. Transferring from GeoEnviron to ArcMap The link between GeoEnviron and ArcGIS is bi-directional. For example, when an object is searched for and retrieved in the GeoEnviron database, the corresponding linked feature object is automatically selected and zoomed in on in ArcMap provided it has been mapped. If the selected feature is mapped as a polygon or line, its centroid is also selected, if a points feature class of the same type also exists as a layer in the map. Multiple features within ArcMap can also be selected from within GeoEnviron. For example, a search within the GeoEnviron database using criteria that results in the retrieval of multiple GeoEnviron records causes the records to be displayed in the overview window. The list of search results can be parsed over to and selected in ArcMap by clicking the gis button on the right hand side of the GeoEnviron Overview Window. Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Communicating with GeoEnviron Objects in this list will be selected, provided they have been mapped in a GeoEnviron linked layer in ArcMap. The map is automatically zoomed to the selected objects. Please Note! A maximum number of 250 objects can be sent from GeoEnviron to ArcMap at a time using the gis button. Transferring from ArcMap to GeoEnviron ArcMap can parse/send information on selected features to the GeoEnviron database using a number of different tools. When the information is sent over to the database, the database retrieves and displays the relevant records and makes the GeoEnviron window the active window. The following section describes these tools. Retrieving a Single Object in GeoEnviron Clicking on the Retrieve in GeoEnviron tool and then clicking on a single GeoEnviron linked feature in ArcMap causes that feature s object to be retrieved in the relevant GeoEnviron module. Please note, before you can select a feature, the integrated layer must be made active by selecting it in the Layers list field on the GeoEnviron toolbar. Retrieving More Objects in GeoEnviron Multiple objects can be retrieved in GeoEnviron from ArcMap using one of the two spatial search tools available on the GeoEnviron toolbar. First select an integrated layer using the Layers list field on the GeoEnviron toolbar in ArcMap. The Buffer search facilities contained in the integration consist of two tools: Buffer search around a polygon Buffer search around a circle GeoEnviron linked features on the active map layer can then be selected by drawing a buffer zone around them using either of the tools. When the drawing of the polygon or circle is completed, a dialog box appears allowing you to specify a buffer size numerically in map units. Objects that fall within or intersect the buffer zone are then searched for and retrieved in the GeoEnviron database. Buffer size options are: zero: the buffer will not be used for selection of features. The circle/polygon is used instead positive value: a buffer zone is formed around the circle/polygon and the buffer is used for selection of features Ver. 4.2, 4 th Edition, April

GeoEnviron 4.2 Communicating with GeoEnviron negative value: a buffer zone is formed inside the circle/polygon and the buffer is used for selection of features The selected GeoEnviron linked objects are retrieved and displayed as a list in the Overview Window of the relevant GeoEnviron module. On returning to ArcMap, you will notice that the retrieved objects remain selected in the map. The search area and the buffer zone can be removed from the map by selecting them with the Select Element tool in the Tools toolbar and clicking Delete. Selecting Features in ArcMap There are a number of native advanced ArcMap functions available for making selections in map layers. These can be activated from the Selection menu in ArcMap which is accessed by right clicking on a map layer in the table of contents. Once GeoEnviron linked features have been selected on the map, they can be saved as a shapefile using the Convert selection to shapefile function on the GeoEnviron toolbar.
