4 Security & Privacy OS X Mavericks adds categories for Calendars, Reminders, and Accessibility

5 Notifications There is a new ios-style Do Not Disturb option.! Select this item in the list on the left, and you can choose particular times and conditions (when the display is sleeping, when it s mirroring to a projector or TV) during which you wish to disable notifications. You can optionally choose to allow FaceTime calls during Do Not Disturb time (from everyone or only from Favorites), and allow someone to break through by calling repeatedly.

6 Internet Accounts Options for different internet services now can be configured here: LinkedIn, Vimeo and Flickr among others. Facebook settings include access to your calendars/contacts.

7 Bluetooth You no longer have to specifically click the plus (+) button to initiate a new Bluetooth-device pairing. Instead, any discoverable Bluetooth device in range of your Mac appears here with a Pair button next to it; you just click that button to pair your Mac with it. Already-paired devices appear in the same list, with an X button to remove the pairing.

8 App Store and Dictation & Speech The big change here is a new option to automatically download and install updates to apps purchased from the Mac App Store.!! A new option called Use Enhanced Dictation, when enabled, downloads nearly 800MB of data that allows offline use of OS X s dictation feature, along with continuous dictation and live dictation feedback.

9 Mail 7.0 Smarter smart mailboxes! You can now include a specific account as one of the criteria for a smart mailbox: A new condition called Account lets you limit the smart mailbox s searches to one of your configured accounts. Search by attachment New Notification Center alerts Check Mail Automatically File > Export as PDF

10 Under the Hood Timer Coalescing! Timer Coalescing, a feature new to the Mac OS but used by Microsoft since Windows 7, aims to extend processor idle time by adjusting the timing of application calls to bundle several tasks together and run them all at once instead of one at a time. The result is that the CPU makes better use of its time while at work, it has longer idle times, it spends less time waking up, and you enjoy better battery life.!! Memory Compression! In Mavericks, Apple introduces Memory Compression, which is based on the concept that it s faster to compress and uncompress data residing in RAM than to transfer the data from memory to your drive and back.!! Memory Compression should not only improve performance in memoryhungry applications, but, since it reduces how often your Mac needs to access storage devices, it should also curb wear and tear on hard drives and SSDs.

11 Under the Hood continued App Nap! App Nap senses when an app isn t doing anything and puts that app into a low-power state. The app s windows have to be hidden, either in the Dock or behind other windows, and it can t be playing music or other audio. App Nap also checks to see if the app has specifically disabled App Nap and makes sure it doesn t implement any power-management features of its own. When you need to use one of these background apps, App Nap deactivates, and the app switches to full speed. Safari Power Saver! can reduce power usage when you re Web browsing by up to 35 percent.! You ve probably noticed that many autoplay videos aren t always the main content on a webpage they re often on the margins, in a small window. Safari Power Saver will prevent those side videos from playing automatically, showing one of the first frames of the video instead. Safari Power Saver won t prevent the main video on a page from playing, so you can concentrate on the content you intend to consume.!

12 Design Changes No more leather!! Calendar, Contacts, and Notes are now sporting the clean Jony Ive interface!! Linen and Metal are gone!! You will notice that the brushed-metal look of System Preferences and the linen texture of the login window have been replaced by a dark, flat gray.

14 Safari Troubleshooting Tip With the latest versions of Safari, loaded Web pages are collected in groups of separate running processes, which helps keep others stable if one goes awry. Unfortunately each of these processes is similarly named Safari Web Content.!! To identify the problem web page, open Activity Monitor and perform a search for "Safari Web Content" to isolate the running processes, and then sort by CPU usage or other method for locating the one giving you problems.!! With the problematic process located, simply hover your mouse over it and you will see a tooltip box appear that contains the URLs for the pages loaded in that process. You can then quit the specific page rather than restarting Safari.

16 Turn off App Nap Tips Disable Notifications for the Day! Hold down the Option key on your keyboard while you click the Notification Center icon in your Menubar. Multiple Displays? Keep the Dock from swapping screens.! In Mavericks, the Dock will automatically appear on a secondary display if you drag your mouse to the bottom of the screen on the secondary monitor (this will cause the Dock to switch displays from the primary display).! Just move the Dock to the left or right side of the primary display to prevent the Dock from moving.

17 Change The Login Screen Wallpaper In OS X Mavericks If you don t mind replacing that Apple logo with a much larger image, thereby hiding the linen look but losing the Apple logo, then here s how to do just that.! Find a large image you want to have as your login screen wallpaper, either with a Google image search or an image you took yourself. Next, open this up in Preview and save as a.png file, using the Export function. Then, in the Finder, make copies of the file until you have a total of four. Rename them to apple.png, apple_s1.png, apple_s1@2x.png, and apple@2x.png.! Now, go backup the Apple logo for the linen login screen. Hit Command-Shift-G and type or paste the following path into the resulting field:! /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/LoginUIKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ LoginUICore.framework/Resources/! Option-drag the four files there out to a folder on your Desktop, or anywhere else you want to back these files up. This will copy the files to your folder.! Next, drag all of the four files you created with your own image to this /Resources folder, and allow your Mac to replace the files there (you made a backup above, so it s ok). You ll probably need to type in your administrator password and login name here.! To see the changes, all you need to do is Log Out of your Mac, either by hitting Command-Shift-Q, or Choosing Log out from the Apple menu.!! Read more at

18 icloud Keychain Automatically create and fill-in a password! 1. Must be using Safari browser! 2. Navigate to site, and when you go to the create/change password field, a popup will appear 3. Click Use Safari suggested password, and icloud Keychain will now sync the new password across all your iphones, ipod touches, ipads, and Macs.
