2 Before installing the software please repair disk permissions. This is done with the Disk Utility. To locate the Disk Utility, open Finder and click on the Applications icon. After you open it, there s another folder titled Utilities. And finally, open Disk Utility. It s the Hard Drive with a stethescope. Click to open, notice on the left of the screen two or more line items. The first is the brand and model of your computer s hard drive, the second item should be the name of your computer (Example-my Hard Drive is called Imac G5 HD; I would choose this one). Click to highlight this will take you to the FIRST AID page.

3 Notice at the bottom there s a button called REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS. Click this and let this run. In the white box above the button there will be a message that will tell you when permissions are repaired. After it says Permission Repairs Complete Quit Disk Utility.

4 Now pop the CD in and click on the disk image to open your CD. Inside you will nd folders that are labeled 10.4 thru 10.8 on them. You will also find the instruction manual in pdf format. Now, if you re using a MacBook that doesn t have a CD drive, you ll need to download the driver from our website. Go to quickertek.com/drivers.html and download the Q5 Fifth Generation drivers. Unzip it- it s the same as the CD. It should look like the image below

5 You will need to know what OS you are running on your computer. If you are unsure what operating system you are running. Click the Apple icon at the top left corner of menu bar. A drop down menu will appear, choose ABOUT THIS MAC. Look to see what version you are running. This mac runs !

6 Since the OS on my imac is (Leopard) I would open the folder 10.5 and click on the install package and follow the screens as directed. If you have OS 10.7 or Higher, like this computer that runs , Double Click on the RTUSB D UI _2012_09_28.dmg file, and use the USBWireless-Install.pkg file inside of it. After the drivers install, you will asked to restart your computer. Go ahead and do it, as this is part of installing the software. After computer is back up, notice that you have a new icon at the right top dock. This is the Ralink wireless utility. Make sure that you turn on the AirPort Card as well- it s in the same area. It looks like a piece of pie with lines. Now you will be plugging in the unit into the USB port on your computer. You can use the USB cradle or you can plug directly into the USB port.

7 After you plug the Q5 in, a dialog box will appear stating that a New Network Interface has been detected. Click Network Preferences but let s not do anything here yet. The Wireless Utility will appear automatically every time the unit is plugged in. Available Network is the default tab which show all of the networks that the unit has detected. The Available Network tab is very helpful; it shows the networks and if the network is encrypted or is an open network.

8 We are going to make a PROFILE of our network, so highlight the network that you plan on using, whether it is your own or an open network. Click the ADD TO PROFILE button at the bottom. We are now in the create screen and here you can name your profile what ever you want it is for your use only. I recommend that if you plan on using your computer at different places to name your profiles differently and not leaving them Prof 1, 2, 3 etc. (Example- Home, Coffee Shop, Motel 8). After naming your profile, if your network is not encrypted (password protected) click OK. You will be taken to the LINK STATUS Tab where you will see the profile that you just made.

9 If your network is ENCRYPTED- i.e. PASSWORD PROTECTED there will be a section with the words This network requires a key for the following: And it will show you the type of Authentication/Encryption (i.e. WPA_PSK AES). At the bottom of the screen there will be a section for the network key. If you don t know this, ask your network administrator. If you need to edit a connection -say, for a changed password, go to the PROFILES tab. You will see a list of your profiles there. Either click the profile (highlighting it) you want to edit and then click the EDIT button, or simply double-click the profile.

10 TROUBLE SHOOTING Where is the RALINK BAR? If the RALINK bar doesn t show up, Open up Finder and go to the Applications folder. Look and see if there is a RALINK folder within the Applications Folder. Open the RALINK folder and the RALINK icon should appear on the bar the way it s supposed to.
