3 1.0 About QuickTools GUI QuickTools is the name given to the embedded GUI within the 6.x version of firmware. Although QuickTools is not as feature-rich as Enterprise Fabric Suite 2007 (EFS), much of the management of a single switch can be accomplished through QuickTools. If using the QLogic Virtual Lab equipment (vlab), connect to the training server using Remote Desktop before beginning the lab. Starting QuickTools 1. From your training server, open up a browser. 2. Enter the address of Switch_A in your assigned lab area. 3. Because JRE has been installed on the workstation, you will see the Add a New Fabric dialog box. Enter the default information a. Login Name: admin b. Password: password 4. A dialog box may appear regarding the account password not being changed. Click OK to dismiss. 2.0 Gathering Information 2.1 Devices By default QuickTools will open on the devices tab. Answer the following questions. 1. What is the FC Address of the device connected to Port 0? 2. Is the device connected to Port 0 a Target or Initiator? 3. What type of device(s) are connected to Port 6? 4 2.2 Switch Tab The information in the switch tab is separated and can be sorted using the icons on the left of the Data Window. Summary Info By default the Summary information is shown when the Switch tab is selected. The icon is on the left. 4. Locate the Serial Number and click on it. 5. Did the Field Highlight? This is to make viewing the information easier. Any of the fields can be highlighted. 6. How many ports does the switch tab show? The Number of Ports field will show all of the ports on the switch, even though this switch is licensed for only 8 ports. The switch will be upgraded in a later lab exercise. Status Info The Status icon will display the hardware status of the switch. 7. What is the internal Temperature of the switch? 8. What is the POST Status of the switch? The POST status is the result of the most recent Power On Self Test (POST). Network Info The Network Information will include the IP Address of the switch and other parameters that involve the Ethernet port. 9. What is the IPv4 Address of the switch? 10. Is this information in the Summary section? The IP Address is NOT in the Summary section, but the MAC address is. Lab Note: We will be using IPv4 throughout this course. 5 User Login This icon displays information about the current user. You are currently logged in with the admin user account, which is considered the super user. This is the only account that may create other user accounts. Firmware This icon displays the firmware version of the switch. 11. Is the Pending Firmware Version the same as the Firmware Version? On a firmware load, prior to activation, the Pending Firmware will be a different version. Services This icon displays the services that are enabled on the switch. 12. What is the Embedded GUI Enabled setting? Since we are using QuickTools, this has to be enabled. 13. What is the GUI Mgmt Enabled setting? GUI Management Enabled must also be enabled for QuickTools. Zone/Security This icon displays the Zoning Modes and Security Settings. These will be explained more fully in the zoning lab. 14. What is the Default Zone setting? This setting will be introduced in the zoning lesson/lab. Advanced Info This icon displays various settings that would impact a multiple switch fabric and will be explained in later lessons/labs. 6 2.3 Port Stats 15. Start Iometer and run traffic to all drives. 16. Click on Port Hold the <ctrl> key and click port Select the Port Stats tab. 19. Absolute is shown in the drop down box below the faceplate of the switch. Scroll down until you find Total Errors. 20. How many Total Errors are shown for a. Port 0? b. Port 6? 21. In the drop down box, select Rate. Note how the stats are changed. 22. In the drop down box, select Baseline. 23. Do the numbers for Total Errors match the Absolute value above? You should have noticed that they are the same. 24. Click Clear Baseline. This will clear the Baseline measurements so that updates are more easily seen. The screen will update approximately every 45 seconds. 25. After seeing the screen update, stop Iometer. 2.4 Port Info The Port Info tab is separated out much like the switch tab was earlier. Summary Info By default the Summary information is shown when the Port info tab is selected. 26. Ports 0 & 6 should still be selected. Note that info for both ports is shown in the Data Window. 27. Click on Port 0. Now only the information for Port 0 is selected. 28. With Port 0 selected, hold down the <shift> key and click Port 6. This brings up the information for the range of ports. Advanced Info This icon displays various advanced port settings that can be configured on the switch. 29. Select Ports 0 & 6 only. Click the mortarboard (graduation cap). Take note of the advanced switch properties shown in the Data Window. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

7 Extended Distance This icon displays extended distance settings for each of the ports. Media This icon displays information about the SFP transceivers (media) that are installed into the ports. 2.5 Configured Zonesets This tab will display the Zonesets and Zones that are saved on the switch. Zoning is covered in a later lesson/lab exercise. 2.6 Active Zoneset This tab will display the Zones and members that are in the currently Active Zoneset in the fabric. Zoning is covered in a later lesson/lab exercise. 2.7 Fabric Tree The Fabric Tree also contains important information regarding the switch health and the fabric. 30. Click on the cloud icon. Does the display change? The cloud icon represents the fabric. QuickTools does not have the capability of managing the fabric, only the switches in the fabric. 31. How many switch icons are in your fabric tree? If there were multiple switches in this fabric, you would be able to manage all the switches, by clicking on the switch icons shown. 8 3.0 Switch Configuration Initial configuration of the SANbox Stackable switches will consist of the following tasks: Network Properties (IP Address, etc.) Switch Properties (Domain ID, Switch Symbolic Name) Set Date & Time Load Firmware User Accounts (optional) SNMP Properties (if customer supports SNMP) 3.1 Network Properties 1. From the menu, select Switch Network Properties 2. The default values are shown in the dialog box to the right. If using the QLogic vlab, the devices should be set to DHCP. 3. Do not make any changes to the IP Address at this time. Click Close. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

9 3.2 Switch Properties 4. From the menu, select Switch Switch Properties 5. The default values are shown in the dialog box below. 6. Change the Domain ID to match the last octet of the IP Address. 7. Lock the Domain ID 8. Verify the Symbolic Name is Switch_A. If not, change it. Tech Tip 1 : The Domain ID should be assigned during the planning of the SAN and then locked so that it can never be automatically changed. Tech Tip 2 : The Switch does not need to be configured offline for these changes to be made (unless performing a Restore). If making these changes in a live SAN, you may want to take the switch offline prior to making these changes. 9. Click OK. When changing the Domain ID, a fabric notification is sent to all the switches in the fabric. All steering tables need to be recalculated and verifications are completed to make sure that the Domain ID is unique. 10. Click OK on the resulting dialog box. 10 3.3 Set Date & Time 11. From the menu, select Switch Set Date & Time 12. There is no NTP server in the lab. If there was, you could click the NTP Client Enabled check box and enter the IP Address of the NTP Server. 13. Set the switch to your local time and timezone. 14. Click OK. 15. Click OK on the resulting dialog box. 3.4 Load Firmware 16. Use the Switch tab to determine the current Firmware version. 17. Normally, a check of the QLogic Downloads site would identify a newer version of firmware. For the lab, go to c:\qlogic\firmware\ on the lab server to see if there is a newer version. 18. From the menu, select Switch Load Firmware 19. Click Browse to navigate to the directory of the new version. 20. The latest version within that directory should appear in the Version field. You could use the drop down to select a specific version or click the Rescan button to automatically select the latest version within the directory. 21. Click Start. A dialog box will appear to explain the process. Note that this will terminate management sessions during the activation of the new version. 22. Click OK. The progress bar will show the Upload, Unpack and Activate sequence. It can take 3-5 minutes for the entire sequence. 23. Click Close when the Activation Successful message appears. 3.5 User Accounts The SANbox switches can be configured with multiple user accounts. There are 2 default accounts that cannot be deleted: images and admin The images account is used to ftp files to the switch. This will be demonstrated in a later lab exercise. Although other user accounts can be created to configure and manage the SANbox switch, the admin user account is the ONLY ACCOUNT THAT CAN CREATE/MODIFY OTHER USER ACCOUNTS. For this reason, it is recommended to change the admin account password for production switches. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

11 24. You are now currently logged in as admin. From the menu, select Switch User Accounts 25. Enter a name for this account. 26. DO NOT CHECK the Admin Authority Enabled 27. Enter a new password (minimum 8 characters) and verify. 28. Select the password to expire in 3 days. 29. Click the Add Account button. 30. Click OK to continue. 31. Click Close on the User Account Administration box. 32. Close the browser Testing the Account 33. From your remote server, open up a browser. 34. Enter the IP Address of Switch_A in your assigned lab area. 35. Login using the username/password that you just created. Note: This user should not have admin authority. 36. On the menu, select Switch. 37. Do you have the same options? 38. From the menu, select Switch User Accounts 39. Note the warning on the dialog box. Click OK. 40. Any user has the ability to change their own password. Click the Change Password tab at the bottom of the dialog box. 41. Close the User Accounts Administration box. Tech Tip 3 : Create accounts without admin authority for users who will need access to the switch, but will not be making any changes. 42. 12 3.6 SNMP Properties SNMP Operation is beyond the scope of the class. 43. From the menu, select Switch SNMP Properties 44. You will need to gather site-specific information to configure the top portion of the dialog box. 45. The Trap 1-5 information will configure the switch to send the SNMP information (traps) to up to 5 different monitoring locations. 46. After reviewing the options, click Close. 4.0 Port Configurations 4.1 Port Views 1. From the menu, select View View Port Media This will display where SFP transceivers are installed. 2. What 2 ports have a green SFP? 3. Which port has a grey SFP? A grey SFP indicates where a transceiver is installed, but no device is logged in. 4. From the menu, select View View Port Speeds The ports on the faceplate now display their operating speeds. 5. From the menu, select View View Port States. Each port will display it s state. See Appendix A for more information. 6. From the menu, select View View Port Types This is the default setting, but can be changed from the File Preferences dialog box. 13 4.2 Port Properties You must select one or more ports when configuring. Multiple ports can be selected by using the <ctrl> or <shift> keys when making selections. 7. Select Port 0 8. From the menu, select Port Port Properties 9. Port 0 is configured with the default settings (shown below). See Appendix A for more information on the Port Properties 10. Close the dialog box. 11. Did the device in Port 0 log in correctly? 12. Select Port 0 and click the Port Info Tab. 13. What is the Operational Port Speed of Port 0? 14. While pressing the <ctrl> key, click on Port Is the Operational Port Speed of Port 6 the same as Port 0? 16. Using the <shift> key, select Ports From the menu, select Port Port Properties 18. Change the Port Speed on all ports to 4Gb. Tech Tip: Check the Configured Speed option BEFORE using the drop down selection. 19. Click OK and OK again. 20. Did you receive an error? 21. Which Port went down? 22. Select the port that is red. In the Port Info tab, select the bottom (Media) icon. 23. What is the Media Speed? This port has an SFP transceiver installed whose maximum speed is 2 Gbps. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

14 24. From the menu, select Fabric Show Event Browser 25. Look for an event similar to the one shown here: Tech Tip 4 : When using the Event Browser, look for the Alarm entries. They will have the most information. 26. Close the Event Browser. 27. Reconfigure Ports 1-3 to have a Port Speed of auto-detect. 4.3 Advanced Port Properties 28. Select one or more ports. 29. From the menu, select Port Advanced Port Properties 30. These options are seldom changed. See Appendix A for more information. Close the dialog box. 4.4 Port Diagnostics 31. Select a port to run tests. 32. From the menu, select Port Port Diagnostics 33. In the Test Selection area, select Port Under Select Test: select Internal. 35. We will not change the default test parameters at this time. Click Start Test. 36. Click OK to put the port in diagnostic state. Note: This will disrupt traffic if any is present. 37. Look in the Test Results area and watch the Test Status. 38. What was the final status after 100 Frames were sent? 39. Click the External Test option and the Start Test button. 40. What device is needed for an External test? 41. Click OK to run the test. Click Stop Test after a few frames have been sent and show failed. 42. Move the dialog box so Port 0 on the faceplate is visible. What color is Port 0? Port 0 will be amber while in diagnostic state. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

15 43. Select the Online test. 44. Click Start Test 45. Did you get an error message? The port is still in diagnostics mode, therefore the online test cannot be started. 46. Click OK on the error message and Close on the Port Diagnostics dialog box. 47. Did Port 0 return to online state? Tech Tip 5 : The External Port test requires a loopback plug be inserted into the port s SFP. The Internal test will perform an electronic loopback within the switch circuitry, so the SFP will not be tested. Both tests require the port to be in Diagnostic State. The Online test allows for testing using the current logged in devices to return frames to the switch. 48. Close the dialog box. 16 5.0 Other uses/features for QuickTools If time allows in the lab exercise, feel free to explore the capabilities of QuickTools. 5.1 Preferences Menu: File Preferences This allows the user to personalize QuickTools. 1. Change the working directory location to c:\qlogic The working directory is the default location that QuickTools will use when the Browse button is clicked. Browser Location is the location of the web-browser to access Help files. Display dialog when making non-secure connections. If not checked, then the initial dialog box will not appear. Event Browser can be disabled by un-checking the option Preferred Initial Port View will allow the user to select which Port View will be the default. 5.2 Nicknames Menu: Fabric Nicknames This allows the user to enter a Nickname that will replace the WWPN wherever it appears. This information is stored on the switch. Nicknames will be entered in a later lab exercise. 5.3 Advanced Switch Properties Menu: Switch Advanced Switch Properties This will bring up the Resource Allocation (RA_TOV) and Error Detect (ED_TOV) Time-Out Values. Tech Tip 6 : Do not change either TOV without express direction of a SAN vendor. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

17 5.4 Services Menu: Switch Services These are the services that can be configured from QuickTools to run on the switch. 5.5 Toggle Beacon Menu: Switch Toggle Beacon When set, all the port LED s on the switch will flash to assist in the identification in the rack. To identify if the Beacon is on from QuickTools, click bottom Switch tab and check the last line on the Summary. It should show the Beacon Status. 5.6 Reset Switch Menu: Switch Reset Switch There are 3 options: Hot Reset: Allows the activation of new firmware. No POST, Non-disruptive Reset: Disruptive to the fabric. No POST Hard Reset: Disruptive to the fabric. Runs POST 5.7 Restore Factory Defaults Menu: Switch Restore Factory Defaults Returns all parameters back to the factory default settings. Exceptions: User Accounts and License Keys are not changed. 5.8 Zoning Menu: Zoning QuickTools allows the user to configure zoning just as they would in EFS This information will be shared in a later lesson/lab exercise. 18 6.0 Support Features 6.1 Event Browser Menu: Fabric Show Event Browser Displays the messages from QuickTools along with alarms and log information from the switches. 6.2 Switch Archive / Restore Menu: Switch Archive Allows the user to save the complete configuration of the switch, including zoning information. The archived information will be saved in a file using.xml format. Editing the.xml file should be done with extreme caution. Switch Restore Menu: Switch Restore Allows the user to restore the configuration of the switch, including zoning information. The restored information will be retrieved from the Archive file. Tech Tip 7 : If a parameter that is only available through the command line interface (CLI) is changed, then the Archive/Restore procedure must be done from the CLI to completely restore the switch. 6.3 Download Support File Menu: Switch Download Support File Allows the user easily gather support information from the switch. It will create a file called dump_support.tgz and save it in the default location. This file can then be sent directly to Technical Support should there be any issues with the switch.. 19 Appendix A: QuickTools Port Information Ports The port icons on the faceplate displays reflect the current information for each port on a switch according to the type of port view selected in the View menu. Ports are selectable and serve as access points for other displays and menus. You select ports to display information about them in their respective data windows or to modify them. Context sensitive popup menus and properties windows are accessible through the port icons. Consult your Installation Guide for information about port numbering. To view different types of port information on the port icons in the faceplate display, open the View menu and select View Port Types, View Port States, View Port Speed, or View Port Media. Port view information is displayed within the port icon itself, such as 1G, 2G, 4G, 10G, IA, and F. Green ports are active, gray ports are licensed/inactive, dark gray ports are unlicensed/inactive, and selected ports have a light-colored border. To view port information without selecting a port, rest the cursor over a port and a small popup text box displays port information. Note: Ports on 128-port switches are not configurable if the blade type is Auto in the Blade Properties dialog. Port States (Administrative) The administrative port state is the state requested by the user in the Port Properties dialog. Online Offline Port is active and ready to send data Port is offline, active, can receive signal, but not allowed to be logged in Diagnostics Port is active and being tested Down The port is disabled, power is removed from the lasers, and cannot be logged in Port States (Operational) The operational port state is reflected in the faceplate display, and refers to the actual state of the port, regardless of the administrative port state requested by the user in the Port Properties dialog. To view the operational state of a port, open the View menu and select View Port States. Online None Inactive Isolated Offline Port is active and ready to send data Port operational state is offline, but administrative state is online. E_Port has lost its connection. The Port Information data window displays information about why the E_Port has isolated. Port is active, can receive signal, but not allowed to be logged in. Diagnostics P ort is active and being tested Downed Port is disabled, power is removed from the lasers, and cannot be logged in. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

20 Port Speeds All ports can be configured for either a fixed transmission speed or to sense (auto-detect) the transmission speed of the device to which it is connected. Auto- Detect 1Gb 2Gb 4Gb 8Gb 10Gb Matches the transmission speed of the connected device. This is the default. Sets the transmission speed to 1-Gbps (not available on 58xx) Sets the transmission speed to 2-Gbps Sets the transmission speed to 4-Gbps Sets the transmission speed to 8-Gbps (58xx only) The transmission speed is 10-Gbps Port Types F Fabric Port Supports a single public device (N_Port) FL Fabric Loop Port Device ports only. Self discovers a single device (N_Port) or a loop of up to 126 public devices (NL_Port). G Generic Port Self discovers as an F_Port or an E_Port GL E Generic Loop Port Expansion Port Device ports only. Self discovers as an F_Port, FL_Port, or an E_Port ISL (inter-switch link) between two switches. The mode that a G_Port or GL_Port is in when attached by an ISL to another fibre channel switch. 21 Port Media The Port Media option indicates the transceiver media status by color. Device port (1/2/4/8 Gbps), optical SFP, online (green) Device port (1/2/4/8 Gbps), optical SFP, offline (gray) Device port (1/2/4/8 Gbps), no media inserted Stackable port, online (green), X2 used for SANbox 9x00, XPAK used for 5000 series switches 10-Gbps port, offline (gray), X2 used for SANbox 9x00, XPAK used for 5000 series switches 10-Gbps port, no media inserted 10-Gbps port, unknown (blue), X2 used for SANbox 9x00, XPAK used for 5000 series switches 10-Gbps port, unlicensed (gray), X2 used for SANbox 9x00, XPAK used for 5000 series switches None Empty port, no transceiver installed (gray), or unlicensed (dark gray) I/O Stream Guard If supported, the I/O Stream Guard feature (on the Port Properties dialog) suppresses the Registered State Change Notification (RSCN) messages on a port basis. I/O Stream Guard should be enabled only on ports connected to initiator devices. Enable Enables RSCN suppression Disable Disables RSCN suppression. This is the default. Auto Suppresses the reception of RSCN messages when the port is connected to an initiator device with an HBA. For older HBAs, Device Scan must be enabled. The default is Auto. 22 Device Scan The Device Scan option (on the Port Properties dialog) queries the connected device during login for FC-4 descriptor information. Disable this option only if the scan creates a conflict with the connected device. Note: The switch monitors a set of port errors and generates alarms based on user-defined sample intervals and thresholds. The Enable All Port Threshold Alarms option in the Port Threshold Alarm Configuration dialog is the master enable/disable setting for all events; it enables (True) or disables (False) the generation of all enabled event alarms. The default is False. Auto Performance Tuning The Auto Performance Tuning option (on the Advanced Port Properties dialog) allows the switch to dynamically control the MFS_Enable, VI_Enable and LCF_Enable features based on the operational state of the port. Enable the Auto Performance Tuning option to allow the switch to dynamically select the setting for these three options. Disable the Auto Performance Tuning option if you want to manually control these three performance options. The default is Enable. ALFairness The ALFairness option (on the Advanced Port Properties dialog) only affects ports running in loop (FL) mode and controls how frequently the switch can arbitrate for access. Disable the ALFairness option to allow the switch to have priority over the various target devices you are likely to have on a loop. The default is Disable. March Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation.

23 Appendix B: Tech Tips 1 Domain ID: The Domain ID should be assigned during the planning of the SAN and then locked so that it can never be automatically changed. 2 Switch Offline: The SANbox does not need to be configured offline for changes to be made (except when performing the Restore function). Some changes (Domain ID) will affect the entire fabric. In a live SAN, you may want to take the switch offline prior to making changes that affect the entire fabric. 3 User Accounts: Create accounts without admin authority for users who will need access to the switch, but will not be making any changes. 4 Event Browser: The Alarm entries will have the most information. 5 Port Diagnostics Tests: The External Port test requires a loopback plug be inserted into the port s SFP.
