Exercise III: Creating a Logo with Illustrator CS6 Project 1: Creating Logos with the Shape Tools Now that we have some experience with Illustrator s tools, let s expand our goal to create a logo, web banner and business card for a new business we would like to start. The tools inside Illustrator offer many more options than we have seen thus far. Let s draw three simple logos using the Illustrator tools we learned about earlier in the workshop. We will choose one of these logos to use in the later portions of the project: The three logos will all be created on the same Illustrator document. In our finished project, we will choose one of these and integrate it into a web banner and a business card. Setting up the Document To begin, we will open a new Illustrator document. 1

1. To create a new document, from the menu bar: File, New 2. To create the document and accept the defaults, The new document appears. 3. Turn on the grid lines, if necessary. 4. To be sure that we are displaying the default colors for the fill and stroke, on the keyboard type: D Beginning the Star Logo The first logo we will create is a simple star logo. This will use the basic shape tools. Our finished logo will look like this: We have already created shapes in various ways. We saw earlier that we could create a three-sided polygon by clicking and specifying the number of sides. We will do this again with a star shape. 1. To begin creating our star, and hold, 2

2. To control the size and number of points on our star: the artboard The Star dialog box appears: This dialog box allows us to set the thickness of the star, the size of the star, and the number of points on our star. 3. To create the star for our logo, in the Star dialog box, type: Radius 1:.1in Radius 2:.5 in Points: 6 4. To close the dialog box and create the shape, Our star is created, but we want to make it more interesting by adding color to it. 5. To begin changing the color of our star, from the Tools panel:, 3

Next, we will add a color to our object. We could use the colors from the Swatches panel, but this is somewhat limited. More colors can be chosen from the color picker. 6. To choose a color for the star, in the Tools panel, From this menu, we could select a custom color or we could choose a predefined color. In our example, let s use a pre-defined color from the Color Swatches button of the Color Picker. 7. To see our color options on the Swatches panel, 8. To choose the color we want, in the first row of color tiles, CMYK Red The star is now filled with a red color. We now want to remove the stroke in order to see this clean-edged shape. We can do this with a keyboard shortcut. 9. To activate the Stroke button by switching Fill/Stroke, on the keyboard, type: By pressing X on our keyboard, we are using a keyboard shortcut that allows us to switch between the foreground and background colors without having to use our cursor. 10. To remove the stroke color, in the Toolbox, X The stroke of the star has been set to none. 4

Completing the Star Logo Our star has a clean look, but it looks like a star that anyone could create. We want ours to look special and to look like it took a lot of effort to make. Let s add small circles to the end of each point. 1. To select the appropriate tool, and hold then 2. To draw our first circle, hold º and a small circle A circle with a diameter of between.1 and.15 inches in diameter is appropriate. The circle takes on the colors set in the fill and stroke section of the toolbox. 3. To position the circle on a point of the star,, then the circle onto one of the points We can add circles to the other points without having to continue to draw and size each one if we use the Alt key to copy while dragging. 4. To create additional circles that match our first circle, hold «and to a new location This process produces an exact duplicate of the selection. 5. Repeat this action for each of the points on the star. The star now looks like the following: 5

The only problem we might have with this would be if we needed to move it somewhere else on our artboard. If we attempt to move our star, it falls apart into seven pieces. This can be fixed by grouping the items and making them one object. 6. To group our object, with the Selection tool active, a selection around the star NOTE: This is sometimes called rubberbanding our objects. 7. To group the pieces, Object, Group The star and all its circular tips are now grouped. Saving our Document This is a good time to save our document. 1. To begin to save the file, from the Menu bar, You see the Save As dialog box. File, Save We need to specify where to save the file and what to call it. Setting the Location and Filename When the dialog box opens, it lists a default location for saving the fi le. On a PC, this location is displayed in the field near the top left corner of the dialog box. We can save the file directly to the desktop or flash drive. 6

On a Macintosh, the Save in fi eld is above the list of visible folders and fi les, and is labeled Where:. To move to the desktop, press the key combination D. From there, you can move into the epclass folder. Now that we have specified the Save in location, we need to specify the filename. Let s make sure that the filename is highlighted first. 4. To highlight the filename, 5. To name the file, type: the default filename star_logo.ai We will now create another logo next to the star, in the same document. Next we will use a slightly different technique to create an atom logo. This will consist of three separate ellipses on top of each other. Rather than create three separate ellipses, we will rotate and copy a single ellipse. It will look like this: Creating a Logo Using Strokes 7

Let s do this now. 1. To set our Fill/Stroke colors to their defaults, on the keyboard, type: Because we will be working with strokes and not with fills, we will modify our fill/stroke options. 2. To set our Fill color to transparent, D the fill swatch, 3. Select the Ellipse tool from the Toolbox. 4. To begin our atom shape, from the shapes menu, a horizontal oval The control panel now reflects several options for modifying the Stroke of the selected object: In the Control panel, we can change the stroke color and the width and can also vary the stroke width. 5. To change the width of the line around our oval, from the Stroke width variation option drop-down box,, 4 Our ellipse now has a fill of none and a stroke of 4 pts. 8

Illustrator contains many options that we could use to help us with creating this atom. One of those options is varying the width of our stroke. 6. To vary the wide of our oval, in the variable width profile field on the Control Panel, and We now have an oval with dimension added by the varying width of the stroke making it look like a calligraphy pen had been used. Rotating Objects To create our atom shape, we need multiple copies of this oval shape, and their position, needs to be rotated to get the result we want. If we were to choose the common paste option of Ctrl-V, Illustrator would insert another copy of our oval onto the center of the artboard. We would like more control over this action, so we will use the Rotate tool to choose another option. 1. Verify that the shape is selected. 2. To copy and rotate our oval, in the Toolbox, The Rotate dialog box appears: To rotate the object, in the angle field, Type: 60, Copy Another oval appears, overlapping the first one at an angle: 9

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the new oval. The shape now looks like the following: Challenge - Add More Detail In many logos representing atoms, small circles are included to represent the electrons that would be inside of an atom. In this section, you ll add those yourself. 1. Use a combination of the Ellipse tool and the Selection tool to create the circles on and inside the ovals using the same technique we used on the red star. The finished atom looks like: 2. Group the object. 3. Save the file as atom_logo.ai. We will now create a third logo. Altering Basic Shapes In this section, we will begin with a simple shape, and then alter it to create a more elegant shape. Our goal for this section is to create the Leaf logo. 10

Modifying a Shape to Create the Leaf In this exercise, we will draw the leaf, creating the shape by modifying a square. 1. To begin creating a leaf, from the Shapes tool in the Toolbox We want to create a perfect square with this tool, rather than a generic rectangle. To do this, we will maintain proportions using a keyboard modifier. 2. To draw a square, Hold º, a square on the artboard We will continue creating our leaf by rotating the square into a diamond shape. Now, we ll rotate the square 45 degrees to make it a diamond. 3. To prepare to rotate the square,, to the corner of the square 4. To rotate the object, Hold º, 45 degrees NOTE: The º key can also force our object to rotate in 45-degree increments. 11

Next, we ll begin altering the diamond shape to turn it into a leaf. Using the Direct Selection Tool In Illustrator, every shape is made up of points connected by paths; we can change a shape by modifying the individual points that define it with the Direct Selection Tool. This allows us to create much more complex objects from the simple shape tools. Let s select the Direct Selection tool now. 1. To activate the Direct Selection tool, 2. To deselect all items on the artboard, No objects are selected now. 3. To select the point we want to edit, the artboard one of the side points of the diamond With this point selected, the control panel changes to offer us the option we need to create a leaf shape. On the control panel, there are two options that will change our point. One will make our point a corner point, but since it already is a corner point, we won t bother with this option. The other will convert our point to a smooth point. The second option is the one we want to use: 4. To transform our diamond shape into the leaf shape, with the left point selected, 12

5. To duplicate this effect for the right-side of the diamond, repeat steps 3 and 4. The object looks like the following: Now this looks more like a leaf, but it is a bit broad. 6. To modify the shape, with the Direct Selection tool selected, the left anchor point, toward the center of the shape 7. Repeat step 6 for the right side. Now the graphic is narrower and more like a leaf shape. 8. To deselect, the artboard Modifying Shapes Using Other Pen Tool Features The Pen tool has a lot of power and we have just touched the surface of the many things that it can do. We will add more to our knowledge of how it works by adding points to our shape. Our goal is to create the idea that there is a stem through the middle of the leaf by adding some points and manipulating those. We can add points to objects with the Add Anchor Point tool. Let s add some points now. 13

1. To activate a new option of our Pen tool, and hold, We see the Pen nib, but the icon also includes a plus sign, indicating its function to add points to a path. By adding points to the path, we can modify the shape in new and interesting ways. 2. To add points to the path, on the left side of the shape, on the path 1/4 of the way up from the lowest point 3. Repeat the previous step for the right side of the path. Now, we will alter the position of the newly placed points by using the Direct Selection tool. 4. To activate the Direct Selection tool, 5. To be sure that nothing is selected, 6. To alter the shape of our leaf, the artboard Select the bottom point and Up Continue to adjust the point until the leaf takes on the shape we want. The leaf should finally look something like the following: 14

NOTE: Holding down the Shift key while dragging the point up will aid in the point following a vertical line upward. 7. Make the fill color an appropriate color and make the stroke color transparent. 8. Deselect and Save as leaf_logo.ai. We will work with gradients and effects to complete the logo we choose to use for the rest of our projects. Adding Gradients and Effects In this section, we will finish creating a logo by adding a background gradient and drop shadow effects to one of our icons. Creating Gradients We are going to add a gradient to a shape that will be the backdrop for one of the logos we have created. We will begin by creating a shape for our background. In the shapes tool bar, there are several options. Let s begin with the Rounded Rectangle. 1. To choose the shape for our background, and hold, Set the Stroke to transparent, and the Fill color to any non-white color. 2. To draw a rounded rectangle, Hold º, a square 15

NOTE: Another method to create a shape is to on the Artboard to specify the dimensions for the shape - this will allow us to choose the radius for the rounded corners. 3. To set the fill/stroke to default colors, press: D Because our shape is selected, the fill and stroke color change to reflect the default colors. 4. Alter the size and position of the rectangle with the Selection tool. Our shape is now ready to accept a gradient fill. We can create our own gradient effect easily as we saw earlier. 5. To see the gradient options, with the background shape selected, from the panels on the right side of the screen, The Gradient panel appears. 6. Confirm that the Fill icon is active in the Toolbox. 7. To activate the gradient for the fill color, in the Gradient panel, 8. To change the gradient color, We see a pop up appear, showing us different options for colors: 16

NOTE: If the colored bar does not appear, go to the fly-out menu from the Color panel and choose CMYK. 9. To choose a color for the right side of our gradient, 10. To close this panel, any color away from the menu The right side of the gradient has changed color. 11. To modify the color on the left side of the gradient, the white color swatch on the Gradient Slider 12. To change the gradient color for the left side, repeat steps 8 and 9. Our goal is to create a subtle color change, so that the second color is within the same color family as the first color. Try several different options to find the best option for the logo. Another function in the Gradient Panel that will enrich our project is to add one more color (or step ) to our gradient - another instance of the first color. 13. To do this, move the lighter color to the center of the slider, the light color to the middle 17

14. To duplicate the darker color, Hold «, the darker color all the way to the left Now we have a three-step gradient. 15. To adjust the gradient colors, the diamond shapes above the Gradient Slider 16. To tilt the gradient pattern slightly, in the Angle field of the gradient menu, type: 30 Now we will paste one of the logos onto the gradient. Pasting in Front As we create objects in Illustrator, they are arranged in a stacking order with the first objects created on the bottom, and subsequent objects continuously stacked on top of each other. Accordingly, the gradient is on top of the stack of objects and the logos are underneath. When we want to easily move or copy an object onto the top of the stack, we can paste it in front. Let s paste a logo object in front of the gradient now. 18

1. With the Selection Tool, choose a logo to be placed on the gradient. 2. To cut the logo, on the keyboard: Hold Command Key, and press x The image is on the computer s Clipboard, ready to be pasted elsewhere. 3. To paste the logo in front, from the Menu bar, Edit, Paste in Front The object is ready to be moved on top of the gradient. 4. To move the logo into place on top of the gradient, with the Selection tool, 5. Save the file. Adding Effects the logo on top of the gradient Illustrator offers many pre-defined effects, such as glows, warps, and shadows. Let s explore one very common effect - the drop shadow - here to add a finishing touch to our logo and our background. 1. To select the logo and the background, with the Selection Tool active, the logo, hold º, the rectangle Both shapes are now selected. 2. To apply a drop shadow, from the menu bar, Effect, Stylize, Drop Shadow The Drop Shadow dialog box appears: 19

3. To create the Drop Shadow window, type the following values in the menu: Opacity: 100% X Offset: 3pt Y Offset: 3pt Blur: 5pt 4. To complete the drop shadow effect, 5. To group both of these items together, while they are both selected, from the menu bar, 6. Save the file. Object, Group Now we can create a web version of our document. 20

Creating a Web Graphic In this section, we will incorporate our logo into a new web graphic. We will want to transfer our chosen logo to a new document, so let s select the current graphic and copy it into memory. 1. To select the logo,, 2. To copy the logo into memory, Edit, Copy Now we can create a new file. Since we re creating a file for the web, we will create it at a specific size. 3. To begin a new document, from the menu bar, The New File dialog box appears. File, New 4. To create the file size we need, enter the following information: Name: Web Banner Profile: Custom Width: 960px Height:180px NOTE: Units can be changed in the units dropdown cell, if necessary. 5. To create our artboard, 21

6. To choose the Rectangle Shape tool,, 7. To create a box that will be the background of our banner, in the Tools panel, a box that covers the artboard 8. To activate the Fill options for the object, at the bottom of the Tools panel, color We will use a specific color as our background. We will use a hexadecimal value to represent the three colors: Red, Green, and Blue. 9. To find the color we need, from the Color Picker, type the value for the web color: #3e2925. We would like our background to stay in place, so we will lock it. This will be helpful so we don t accidentally move it. 10. To lock the layer, from the menu bar, Object, Lock, Selection We will be using our logo in this new design, so we ll paste it into our new file. 11. To paste the logo into the new document, Edit, Paste 22

12. Use the Selection tool to move and re-size the image so that it appears on the left side of the artboard. Now it is time to add text to our graphic. Working with Type Illustrator offers a great deal of flexibility and control when using typography. In this section, we ll practice two methods of applying type: Point Type and Area Type. The difference between the two types is how they respond to editing. We create Point Type by clicking on the artboard and typing. When editing with Point Type, the text adjusts in size, stretching and distorting, as we increase or decrease the size of the frame the text is in. With Area Type, before typing, we draw a box for the text to live in. When editing this frame, the text remains the size it was when typed although its position may change and only the size of the frame changes. In this exercise, we ll combine the logo we completed in the previous section with several lines of Point Type in order to create a web banner graphic. Adding Point Type We can add Point Type by simply clicking on the artboard with the type tool. Let s try it now. 1. To add text to our graphic,, the artboard We see the blinking text cursor appear. 2. To create text, type: your first and last name, and a brief description of yourself or your site Now we can format our text. 3. To modify the look of our text,, the text 23

Unlike other applications, in Illustrator we do not have to press and drag to highlight text in order to modify it. If we have the text box active with the Selection tool, we can change the size, font, color and more. 4. To view options for adjusting the text as we make them, from the menu bar, Window, Type, Character This opens up the Character panel: The Character panel allows us to change the font, line spacing, and other attributes. First, we will change the font size and spacing by pressing and dragging with the Selection tool and watch the attributes change in the Character panel. 5. To change the size of the text, with the Selection tool, Hold º and a corner point Note how the character attributes change in the Character panel. We will also use the Character panel to modify text. 6. To change the font, in the Character panel,, the font of your choice 7. To be able to see the text after it is moved onto the dark background,, and choose a light color 24

At this point, the banner can be personalized by our choice of font, style, leading, etc. If you would like to change part of the text within the text box, it will need to be selected before the changes are made. 8. Save the file. The web banner is now complete. Creating a Business Card In our last exercise, we ll combine the logo we completed in the previous section with a section of Area Type in order to create a business card later. We will create a new document to do this. 1. To create a new document, from the menu bar, File, New 2. To make our document the size of a business card, use the following settings: Name: Business Card Width: 3.5 in. Height: 2 in. Click: OK Again, we will copy the material we used in the previous file. 3. To go back to our last file at the top of our screen, 4. To select both the logo and the text, Hold º, the logo and text object 25

5. To create a copy of these two pieces, on the keyboard, Hold Command, and press c 6. To return to our business card document, 7. To paste our logo and text onto our business card, Hold Command, and press v Scaling an object Our graphic and text is way too large for the business card we are designing so we will reduce the size by using the scale tool. 1. To appropriately resize our image and text, in the toolbox, 2. In the menu that appears are options for reducing the size by percentages. To scale our object, use the following settings: Uniform: 50% Scale Strokes & Effects: Check the box By making the check box active, the drop shadow that we added will proportionately be reduced in width along with the size of the object. Making our text visible Our text is the same color that it was in our last document, so we are unable to see it on our white artboard. We will need to deselect our object and then select only the frame containing our text. 26

1. To deselect everything on our artboard, choose the Selection tool from the toolbox and click on the artboard. 2. To be able to see our text, with the Selection tool, the text frame 3. Choose a new darker Fill color. 4. If necessary, also choose a new fill color for the logo. 5. To scale the text so that it fits our Business Card,, the text frame The text has been resized appropriately. 6. If necessary, resize the logo with the Selection tool. Now we can add some Area type. Adding Area Type We will need to add a bit more text to our card, possibly with our contact information. This time, we ll use Area Type instead of Point Type. 1. To use Area Type, from the tool box, a frame inside the artboard NOTE: Leave a 1/4 margin inside the artboard. 2. To add content in the box, type: contact information ( , phone, etc) in the text box 3. Format the text to your liking. 4. Save the file. The business card is now complete. 27

Saving/Exporting Final Artwork Now that we have completed our projects, we will need to save the file in appropriate formats for their purpose. Saving for Print We should be able to print our Illustrator files from the computer that we created them on without any issues; however, if we are printing files from another computer or sending them to a print vendor, there are a few points to keep in mind. Managing Fonts Fonts are stored on individual computers - there s no guarantee that another computer or a print vendor will have the font(s) used in our document. To ensure that our type shows up as planned, it s a good idea to convert our type to outlines. This means changing our type from live, editable type to shapes that Illustrator treats just like any other shape object. Let s do this now. 1. To ensure that we have a saved copy of our file, File, Save a Copy This will keep our original file safe while we make changes to a different version. 2. To name the file, type: 3. To select the text, Business Card copy,, the text 4. To create outlines, from the menu bar, Type, Create Outlines 28

NOTE: If you save outlined type in our original document, it will not be editable. Working with File Format Most print vendors use Adobe Creative Suite software, but they may not have the same version used to create our document. To avoid file format problems, it s a good idea to save our final document in a universal format, such as PDF. 1. To save our a copy of our document, in the menu bar, File, Save As The Save As... dialog box appears. 2. To save as a PDF, in the Format field,, then Adobe PDF 3. To accept the change, The PDF Options window appears. 4. To alter the quality of the PDF, in the Save Adobe PDF window that opens, in the Adobe PDF Present field, High Quality Print NOTE: Always speak with the group printing your document before committing to file formats. 5. Save the file. Saving for the Web Images used on the Web must meet specific file format and size requirements. In order to use our banner graphic on a web site, we will need to convert it to a different file format. This process is called image optimization. 29

Understanding Image Size/Resolution Since image file sizes affect the amount of time it takes to load a web page into a browser, it s important to keep file sizes as small as possible, while still maintaining reasonable quality. Always set image resolutions to 72ppi (pixels per inch) - this is the default resolution of most device screens. Always scale images to the exact size needed - if the space on our web page is 960px x 180px, our image should be 960px x 180px. While browsers can scale images to fit a particular space, this results in distortion and/or image files that are larger than necessary. Understanding Web Image Formats Web browsers are only able to display a few types of images; therefore, we often need to convert original images into a web-friendly format. Different formats are used for different types of images. File Format TIFF EPS GIF JPEG Best Used for: Best suited for pixel-based graphics that are scanned into the computer or created with Adobe Photoshop. Best for graphics created with a vector-based drawing system, such as Adobe Illustrator or Freehand Best used for the web as the file size is small and it will not print well. Best used for the web as the file size is small and it will not print well. Optimizing Images Fortunately, Illustrator includes features that make it easy to optimize web graphics. 1. To begin to optimize our file, from the menu bar, File, Save for Web 30

Illustrator attempts to choose the file format and settings that are best for the artwork that our document contains. As noted in the table above, GIF and PNG files are generally best for illustrative art. 2. To choose a format for our file, in the drop down menu next to Preset, GIF 128 No Dither 31

Rev. 03/15/2015 Project 2: Creating a Rowan Baseball team logo In this workshop today, we will create a logo for Rowan Baseball team as in the following figure.
