3 Chapter 1: About This Guide Time Warner Cable Business Class Online Backup provides remote backup services for computers and servers. Your files are automatically backed up to a secure, off-site data center so that you can easily recover files that get damaged or lost. Backed up files are protected at all times files are encrypted before they are sent over the Internet, while they are being sent over the Internet, and when they are stored in the data center. Online Backup is easy to set up. You simply download and install the Online Backup client software on to your computer. Online Backup works in the background. By default, it goes to sleep whenever the computer is in use so that the computer and the network connection are not slowed down. You have the flexibility to customize how the software works selecting when and how often backups occur, which files to backup, allocation of bandwidth, and other settings. 4 Chapter 2: Getting Started To get started with Online Backup, you will need to follow these steps: 1. Receive Online Backup welcome from your company administrator. 2. Download the Online Backup client software by clicking on the download link in the Install the software on your computer and activate it by entering the license key provided in the . If you do not have this , please contact your company Online Backup administrator. 1. Click on the Online Backup client download link provided in your welcome After the file is downloaded to your computer, the Online Backup installer icon will appear on your desktop. 5 Chapter 2: Getting Started 4. Click Continue and the Welcome screen will appear. Click Continue. Figure 3: Welcome screen 5. Read the Important Information page, then click Continue. 6. Read the License Agreement, click Continue, then click Agree. 7. Click Continue. Online Backup will be installed to the root library folder of System Preferences. Click Install. 8. Enter your Mac s administrator name and password, then click OK. 9. After Online Backup is successfully installed, click Close to exit the installation program. 6 Chapter 2: Getting Started Activating Online Backup After you close the insta llation program, you will need to enter the license key thatt is provided in your Online Backup welcome . NOTE: If you are backing up multiple computers, you will need a separate license key for each computer. Contact your company administrator if you need more license keys. To activate Online Backup: 1. In the Address field, type the address to which the license key was sent. 2. In the Product Key field, enter the license key in your welcomee . Click Next. Figure 5: and Li cense Key screen NOTE: Make sure the lock is open in the lower left corner so you can enter information. 3. In the Name field, type your name. 4. In the Password field, type a password. Your password must be at least eight characters. 5. In the Retype Password field, type your password again. Click Next to finish setup. Here are some important things to know before your first backup: Your first backup might take a while depending on the amount of data and the speed of your Internet connection. See the next section, Tips on Backing Up Files, for more details. You can continue to use your computer while your backup is running. To access Online Backup, go to System Preferences. 8 Chapter 2: Getting Started Tips on Backing Up Files Selecting Files for Backup Online Backup was designed to back up data files. It was not designed to back up system and application files. Therefore, you can back up all files except for your operating system, application, or temporary Internet files such as: disk images (.iso), virtual drives (.vmc,.vhd,.vmsn), system configuration and driver files (.sys) and application files (.dll). Determining Files for Backup When determining which files should be backed up, you should include business-critical data that is difficult to replace or crucial to the operation of your business should be included in your backup data set, including: Proprietary documents Spreadsheets Contact lists Financial records Database files Intellectual property Options for Selecting Files Online Backup offers several options to select files for backup: manually select files or folders (see page 15), use default backup sets (see page 16), or create custom backup sets (see page 17). A fast and easy way to select files for backup is to use backup sets which groups files according to file type in specified directories. Each time a new file of a type you have selected for backup is saved to your computer, Online Backup automatically selects that file for all subsequent backups. For example, selecting the Word Processing Documents backup set automatically backs up all Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org, WordPerfect, Adobe Acrobat, and text files on your computer under the My Documents and Desktop folders. All subsequent files saved to your computer in these folders with the same file extensions are automatically added to your backups. You can edit the existing backup sets to fit your needs or create custom backup sets. For example, if you have a computer aided design application that saves files with the extension.cad, you can create a custom backup set to find and backup all files with the extension of.cad in the directories you specify. 9 Chapter 2: Getting Started Tips on Reducing Backup Time The initial backup will take the longest time and may take several days or longer since all selected files will need to be encrypted and sent to the Online Backup data center. A number of factors impact this initial backup time, including size of files to be backed up, amount of bandwidth and computer usage devoted to Online Backup, and speed of your Internet connection. For a typical system on a typical broadband line, and if you continue working on your computer during the backup, Online Backup backs up data at the rate of about 2-4 GB per day. If left undisturbed on a fast connection, however, you can back up over 9 GB in a single day. After the initial backup, subsequent backups will be much faster. Online Backup performs differential backups so that it only backs up the portions of your files that have changed since the last time they were backed up. While your computer is being backed up, you can work on your computer. However, if you wish to speed up the time it takes to complete the initial backup, you may want to consider the following options: Only back up critical files initially. Add other files after the initial backup is completed. Exclude files that are typically very large in size, such as videos, from the initial backup. Change bandwidth and CPU settings used by Online Backup by going to the Options tab in the Online Backup client (see page 20). Typically other Internet applications, such as and web browser, receive priority in bandwidth usage. Keep your computer on overnight. You do not need to be logged into Windows for backup to occur. However, you may need to adjust your Energy Saver preferences to prevent the computer from going into sleep mode for uninterrupted backup. File Version Availability Online Backup stores versions for 30 days. This means that you can restore versions of files that have been backed up within the past 30 days. After 30 days, the files will be deleted from the servers. Due to the availability of versions for 30 days, there are certain implications when you delete, rename, or move files on your computer. Deleting a file: When you delete a file from your computer, the file is marked for deletion on the backup servers. This file will no longer be backed up and Online Backup immediately releases the storage space used by this particular file. However, since the file will be kept on the server for the next 30 days, the file is available for recovery during this time period. After 30 days, the file will no longer be recoverable. Renaming a file: When you rename a file that is being backed up, Online Backup treats it as a deletion of the old file and the creation of a new file with the same content. If you need to restore the file, and the restore date is prior to the renaming, the file uses the old name. After the date of renaming, the file uses the new name. Moving a file: When you move a file from one location to another on your file system, Online Backup treats this in the same manner as a renaming. 10 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client With Online Backup for Mac, you can configure which files and folders you want to back up, either by selecting the files directly or using backup sets. In addition, you can configure Online Backup settings such as how much bandwidth to use and when to back up. For information on restoring files using the client, see Chapter 4. The following topics are discussed in this chapter: Summary Tab Files & Folders Tab Options Tab Backup Status and HIstory Summary Tab The Summary Tab shows backup status and information such as the time of your last backup, how many files you have backed up and how much space you are using. It also gives you several options such as backing up, restoring and viewing your backup history. To accesss this page, click on the Online Backup icon in System Preferences. 11 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client You can select the following options in the Summary Tab: Option Description This switch determines whether Online Backup is on or off. In the ON position, backups occur as scheduled. In the OFF position, backups do not occur. When the lock is closed, you cannot make any changes to backups or settings. To open the lock, click it and enter the administrator's Name and Password for this computer. When the lock is open, you can make changes to backups and settings. This button starts a back up immediately. This button immediately opens the Restore window, allowing you to select files to restore. This button opens the History window, allowing you to view your backup history. This button opens the Uninstall window allowing you to uninstall Online Backup. Show Online Backup status in the menu bar. This checkbox adds the Online Backup icon in the menu bar next to the clock. 12 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Files & Folders Tab The Files & Folders tab allows you to select or deselect any files or folders on your system to include in your backup. You can also create advanced rules to include or exclude files and directories. For more information, see Creating Custom Backup Sets page 17. Figure 8: Files & Folders tab NOTE: Online Backup does not support removable drives that are not "mounted" such as thumb, or flash drives. You can tell if your external drive is "mounted" when you open your Online Backup configuration. If you are able to select files on this drive for back up, then it is a "mounted" drive. If your external drive is not "mounted," first copy the data onto one of your "mounted" drives, then select the dataa for back up. Selecting Files and Folders to Backup 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon 2. Click the Files & Folders tab. to open Online Backup Settings. 3. Navigate to the file or folder you want to include in your backup and click. When you select a folder, all its subfolders and files are included as well. Status icons show whether the file or folder is selected for backup. For more information, see Backup Status Icons on page 19. To exclude a certain file already marked for backup, select the file, then click. NOTE: Online Backup was not designed to back up your system and application files. If you need to restore these types of files, it is much easier and more reliable to restore them using your original CDs. 4. Repeat Step 3 until you have selected all the files you want to backup. 13 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Using Suggested Backup Sets Online Backup provides backup sets which group files according to file type in specified directories. A fast and easy way to select files for backup is to use backup sets which groups files according to file type in specified directories. Each time a new file of a type you have selected for backup is saved to your computer, Online Backup automatically selects that file for all subsequent backups. You can edit the suggested backup sets that Online Backup offers by default or else create your own custom ones (see page 17). To view and edit suggested backup sets: 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Files & Folders tab, then click the Advanced button. 3. Click, then select Suggested File/Folder. 4. Select the checkbox next to any set of files you want to include in your backup. Figure 9: Suggested Backup Sets 5. Deselect the checkbox next to any set of files you don't want to include in your backup. 6. Click OK. These backup sets now appear in the Advanced window under Back up. 7. You can edit the backup sets in this window by double-clicking the name of the backup set. For instructions on editing custom backup sets, see Editing Backup Sets on page Click OK. 14 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Creating Custom Backup Sets Online Backup lets you create custom backup sets for your specific needs. When you create a custom backup set, you select the specific files or directories to include in the set or you create rules that include or exclude files and directories. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Files & Folders tab, then click the Advanced button. 3. Click, then select Advanced. 4. Enter a name for this backup set in the Rule Name field. Figure 10: Custom Backup Set 5. Click the folder next to Back up files inside to identify the folder you want to include. When you select a folder, all of its subfolders are included as well. 6. Select whether you want this backup set to include Any, All or None of your rules. 7. Create a rule using one of the following options. Option fileextension Name Folder filesize Description This rule allows you to select specific file types, such as doc, mp3 or jpg. This rule allows you to select files with a specific file name. This rule allows you to select folders with a specific name. This rule allows you to select folders with a specific file size. 8. To create another rule, click. 9. Create as many rules as you need to select the files you want to include in this backup set, then click OK. 15 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client How do I back up my Entourage ? 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Files & Folders tab, then click the Advanced button. 3. Under Back up click, then select File/Folder. 4. Navigate to this location: /Users/(username)/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/. 5. Select the Database file, then click Add. Your Entourage is now selected for backup. 6. Click OK. How to I back up my contacts? If you cannot find the Address Book backup set, then: 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Files & Folders tab, then click the Advanced button. 3. Under Back up click, then select Suggested File/Folder. 4. Select Address Book, then click OK. 5. Click OK. Excluding Files from Backups Exclusionary backup sets are backup sets that specify files or folders that should not be backed up. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Files & Folders tab, then click the Advanced button. 3. Specify a name for your new exclusionary backup set in the Rule Name field. 4. Click the folder next to Don't back up files inside to identify the folder you want to exclude. When you select a folder, all of its subfolders are excluded as well. 5. Select whether you want this backup set to include Any, All or None of your rules. 6. Create a rule using one of the following options: Option Description fileextension This rule allows you to select specific file types, such as doc, mp3 or jpg. name This rule allows you to select files with a specific file name. folder This rule allows you to select folders with a specific name. filesize This rule allows you to select folders with a specific file size. 7. To create another rule, click. 8. Create as many rules as you need to select the files you want to exclude from your backup, then click OK. 9. Your changes are automatically saved. The newly created backup set appears in the list under Don't back up. NOTE: When you use the Online Backup Preferences window to deselect a file to exclude from future backups using the File & Folders Tab, the file is marked for deletion on the backup servers when you perform your next backup. 16 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Editing Backup Sets You can edit any of the suggested or custom backup sets to ensure you are backing up all of your data. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Files & Folders tab, then click the Advanced button. 3. Under Back up, double-click the backup set you want to edit. 4. Edit the rules to include only the files you want to back up. For more information, see Creating Custom Backup Sets on page Click OK. Backup Status Icons Using the Files & Folders tab, you can easily see which files have been selected for backup. Icon Description The green circle indicates the file or folder has been selected for back up. On a folder it means that everything in the folder is selected for backup. The yellow circle only appears on folders and it means that some, but not all, of the data in the folder has been selected for back up. This symbol only appears when you hover over a folder that is partially backed up and contains a yellow circle. Clicking this circle allows you to back up all or none of the content in this folder, by selecting Back up "folder name" or Don't back up "folder name". 17 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Options Tab The Options tab allows you to configure the Online Backup software and schedulee your backups. Figure 11: Options tab In the Options tab, you can configure the following settings: Option Install updates automatically Use custom location for temporary files Back up automatically Back up on a schedule Limit backup speed Description Automatically installs updates to Online Backup when they are made available. Allows you to specify the location for temporary files. Automatically runs a back up when the computer is idle for more than 20 minutes. Allows you to schedule your back ups. Allows you to limit your backup speed, constantly or for a specified period of time. Configuring Automatic Updates To ensuree you have the latest version of Online Backup as soon as it is available, turn on automatic updates. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon 2. Click the Options tab. to open Online Backup Settings. 3. Select Install updates automatically. Your changes are automatically saved. 4. 18 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Changing the Location of Temporary Files Online Backup uses a temporary directory on your hard drive to prepare your files for encryption. If you want to use another mounted drive that has more free space to store the temporary files, you can choose a custom location where Online Backup places the temporary files. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Options tab. 3. Select Use custom location for temporary files, then click the adjacent default location. 4. Select another folder or select Choose to browse to the new location. a) If you selected Choose, select a location, then click Open. Your changes are automatically saved. Scheduling Backups Two scheduling methods can be used to customize when and how often Online Backup backs up your computer: Automatic: Backups occur when your computer is not in use for 20 minutes. Scheduled: Backups occur at the time you select. You can choose how often and when the backup occurs. Configuring an Automatic Backup Automatic backups begin when your computer is idle for 20 minutes. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Options tab. 3. Select Back up automatically. NOTE: Online Backup does not backup when your computer is in "sleep" mode. To ensure your computer does not enter "sleep" mode while attempting to back up your data, adjust your Energy Saver preferences Scheduling a Backup Scheduled backups occur at the time you select. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Options tab. 3. Select Back up on a schedule. 4. Select the time of the day you want to the backup to occur. 5. From the drop-down list, select every day, every other day, every week or every other week. 6. 19 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Limiting Your Backup Speed During some parts of the day (or always, depending on your service), you might want Online Backup to use less of your upload bandwidth so other higher priority services (such as ) can use it. Online Backup allows you to customize your backup speed so that you don't have to use your information lines when you need them the most. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Options tab. 3. Select Limit backup speed. 4. Click and hold slider to move it left and right to indicate how much of your bandwidth you want Online Backup to use. 5. If you select Limit between, then select the time range when you want limiting to occur. If you don't select Limit between, then Online Backup will always limit your backup speed. Your changes are automatically saved. Selecting Hidden Files In order to backup hidden files, you must make them visible and select them. To change the visibility of hidden files, run one of the following commands from the Terminal application. The default setting is "NO." NOTE: Close the Preferences window before running these commands. 1. To show hidden files in Online Backup and the Finder, run the following command from the Terminal application: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES 2. To show hidden files only in Online Backup, not in Finder, run the following command from the Terminal application: defaults write com.online Backup.preferences ShowAllFiles YES 3. You can now select these files as part of your back up. 4. To hide hidden files, in Online Backup and the Finder, run the following command from the Terminal application: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO 5. To hide hidden files only in Online Backup, not in Finder, run the following command from the Terminal application: defaults write com.online Backup.preferences ShowAllFiles NO 6. 20 Chapter 3: Using the Online Backup Client Backup History The History window displays all attempted Online Backup backups. The left pane lists all the attempted backups, and the right pane displays the details for each backup. Figure 12: History The following information is displayed in the history window: The start time of the backup Duration of the backup Number of files included in the backup Size of the files selected for backup Failures Number of files successfully backed up Size of the successful back up To view backup history: 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Summary Tab. 3. Click the History... button. 4. Click a backup in the left pane. The list of files for that backup appears in the right pane. If you are looking for a specific file, you can sort files by the column headings or use the search field. 5. 21 Chapter 4: Restoring Files Online Backup provides two options for restoring files: Option Client Restore Web Restore Description Allows you to restore from the menu bar. Lets you download files from the Online Backup portal. The following topics are discussed in this chapter: Restoring Files Overview Replacing a Computer Restoring with Online Backup Client Restoring with Web Restore Troubleshooting Restoring Files Overview Online Backup offers two options to restore files: Client and Web Restores. The easiest and best way to restore files is to use the Online Backup software on your computer. However, depending on the reason you need to restore files, you may wish to select one option over the other. If you have very large sets of files, here are some tips that you may want to consider: Restore or download your most critical files first, either one at a time or as part of a small backup set. For example, you may first restore just your and contact information along with a few documents. Group your files into sets according to priority, so that you can restore or download them as you need them or as time allows. For example, you might restore documents and spreadsheets before photos. First restore or download only the files you expect to need in the near term. Then, download or restore the rest of your files at a later time. Restoring Files from Different Platforms Although you cannot replace your computer with a computer of a different platform, you can restore files from one platform to another using Web Restore (see page 28). When doing a Web restore, files that are larger than 2 GB are compressed into a.dmg file to make the download faster. To restore files from a Mac to Windows computer, your files will be downloaded as.dmg files. You have a couple choices for extracting the files from the.dmg files. You can open the.dmg files on a Mac and copy them to a Windows computer, or download a utility that allows you to extract.dmg files on Windows. When restoring your files from Windows to a Mac, files in.zip format can be downloaded and opened directly on your Mac. However, for files using.exe format, you will first need to download the.exe file on a Windows computer first. When you double-click the.exe file, it automatically extracts the files to the specified directory. Once the files have been extracted on a Windows computer, you can then copy the files to your Mac computer. Business Class Online Backup: Mac User Guide (OLB_MACUG-0411) Page 25 21

22 Chapter 4: Restoring Files When restoring files from one platform to another platform, some files may not be compatible with the Windows platform and applications. When migrating from Mac to Windows, you are responsible for this risk, and Online Backup cannot be held responsible for any issues of comparability that arise. Where do I put my restored files for common applications? When you restore files, they are typically restored to the same folder structure they were in when they were backed up. This is usually sufficient for most programs to be able to find your files. However, if you've upgraded your operating system or are restoring from a crash with re-installed programs, you may need to ensure certain files are in particular folders for some programs to be able to find them. You should refer to the documentation of the specific application to find out which folders its files should be in, as well as instructions for pointing to those files if necessary. NOTE: For assistance in restoring Microsoft Outlook items, look up Personal Folders files or.pst files in Microsoft product help documentation for assistance in re-associating Outlook to your restored . Replacing a Computer If you are changing computers and need to move files from your old computer onto a new one, two steps are involved: 1. Install Online Backup client on the new computer 2. Restore files onto the new computer NOTE: Online Backup will only restore files to a replacement computer that is on the same platform as the old computer (Windows or Mac). To restore files from one platform to another, see Restoring Files from Different Platforms on page 25. Access to replacement computer If you are replacing a computer that has been lost, damaged or stolen so that you no longer have access to the computer, install the Online Software client onto the new computer (see page 27). If you still have access to your old computer, it may be faster and easier to move the files directly between the two computers instead of using Online Backup, especially if you have large files. After all files have been moved, follow the instructions below to install Online Backup onto the new computer. How to install Online Backup onto the new computer Before you install Online Backup on your new computer to replace a computer you can no longer use, you should restore all the files backed up from your old computer using Web Restore (see page 28 for details). Once your replacement computer is backed up, any files that are not on your new computer are marked for deletion from the Online Backup servers after 30 days. This approach gives you as much time as you need to ensure that all files are safely restored to your new computer. After all files have been restored, install Online Backup on the new computer and only the files on the new computer will be backed up. IMPORTANT: Once you change computers with your existing Online Backup account, you can no longer use Online Backup to back up files on the replaced computer. 23 Chapter 4: Restoring Files To install Online Backup on a replacement computer: 1. Download and start installing the latest version of Online Backup on the replacement computer (see Downloading & Installing Online Backup Software on page 7 for details). 2. When prompted during the install, log in to Online Backup using your and password. Online Backup automatically recognizes that you are using a different computer and starts the Replace Machine wizard. Figure 13: Replace Machine wizard. 3. Click Next. Your new computer has been configured. 4. To restore files from your old computer immediately, select I want to restore files now (launches a web browser), then click Next. 24 Chapter 4: Restoring Files Restoring with Online Backup Client The first backup must be complete before the Restore tab appears in the client. IMPORTANT: You cannot restore files using the Restore tab while your computer is in the process of backing up your files. 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings, then select Restore Files. The first time you perform a restore, you are prompted for your password. 2. Enter your password, then click Continue. The View and Restore Files window appears. Figure 14: View and Restore Files window 3. In the Backup Date drop-down list, select the date and time that correspond to the backup you want to restore. 4. Click the name of the folder in the left panel and the files in the right panel to be restored. 5. Click Browse, then browse to the location that you want to restore the files. 6. Click Restore to restore the files. If the destination directory is not empty, then you will receive a warning nforming you that any files with the same name will be overwritten. To continue with the restore, click Continue. Restoring Files from the Web In addition to using the Online Backup client software, you can also use Web Restore to restore your files by logging into the Online Backup Portal at See page 35 for information on logging into the portal. When you request a Web Restore, Online Backup gathers your files and sends you an with a link to download your files. Your restored files are only available to download for seven (7) days and you can only download them once. If you want to download your restored files more than once, or after seven days, you will need to submit a new Web Restore request. Files larger than 2 GB are compressed into a.dmg file to make the download faster. NOTE: When restoring from the Web, Online Backup does not preserve your file metadata, such as Date Created or Date Modified. 25 Chapter 4: Restoring Files Selecting Files for Download 1. Log in by going to and entering your user name and password. 2. Click Restore Files next to the computer you want to restore. 3. In Web Restore, click Choose Files to Restore to find files or folders to restore. 4. Online Backup offers two ways to select files for Web Restore: File System or Backup Sets. a) File System view allows you to select files or folders according to how they are arranged on your hard drive. i. Click the folder containing the files you want to restore. To view files in the folder, click the folder's name. Select or deselect individual files, as needed. To select or deselect all files in the list, use Select All checkbox. v. The number of files and size of all files selected are displayed at the bottom of the page. To reduce download times, note the following: vi. o o If your selection exceeds 200 GB, you may want to separate the files into multiple restore requests. If your selection exceeds 1 TB, files will be available in multiple download packages. Click Continue to start the restore process. Select the backup set you want to restore. To view the files in a backup set, click the folder s name. Select or deselect individual files, as needed. 27 Chapter 4: Restoring Files Searching for Files Another way to select files is to search by file name and type. To search for a file: 1. Log in by going to and entering your user name and password. 2. Click Restore Files next to the computer you want to restore. 3. In Web Restore, click Choose Files to Restore. 4. Go to File System tab. 5. Type the search term in the Search box. You must type in at least two characters (letters, numbers or symbols). You can use the wildcard (*) as long as it is the last character. 6. Press Enter. The search results are displayed. Downloading Restored Files You should use a download manager, such as the one included with Safari to download restores especially if you are restoring a large file size. If the download process has any problems or disruptions, a download manager can restart the process where it left off, rather than starting the entire download again from the beginning. To download the restore you requested: 1. Log in to the Online Backup Portal. There are two ways to log in: Click the link in the Web Restore notification that is sent to you once files are available for download Go to and enter your user name and password 2. Click on the name of the computer from where you are restoring files. Figure 17: Select computer from where files will be restored 3. Click on Download Restore beside the file that you wish to restore. When prompted, save the file to your computer and note the location where you saved this file. NOTE: If you find the file isn't being saved, or if your web browser simply tries to open the file instead of offering to save it, you may need to change your browser settings and try again. 28 Chapter 4: Restoring Files 4. The Mac Archive Utility will extract the folder in the same location as the archive. In the extraction destination folder, a restore folder is created with the same name as the restore zip file. This restore folder contains all the folders and files you requested to be restored. Inside the folder, the complete folder structure for all the restored files is preserved. This helps you know where to move your restored folders and files to, so that they will be in the same location as they were when they were backed up. For example, if you back up folders and files in your Documents folder, the path for that folder structure might be something like: /Users/your user name/documents. If you save your restore file in your downloads folder and extract at that location, the path to those restored folders and files becomes: /Users/your user name/downloads/your restore file name /Users/your user name/documents 5. Select all the restored folders and files you need to move, then copy them. For example, using the restore path described in the previous example, in the restored folders, click the last Documents folder, then press Command+C. 6. Navigate to the folder that should contain the restored folders and files, then paste them. To continue the example, you would navigate to this folder: /Users/your user name/documents. 7. Verify that the copied folders and files were pasted into the correct folder. 8. (Optional) If you don't want to keep the zip file and the set of folders and files you extracted from it (you copied them when you moved them, and they may take a lot of space on your computer), find them and delete them. Restoring an Older Version of a File Over time, as you edit files, different versions of those files are backed up. When you choose files to restore, you can select an older version of any file. You can download a single, older version of a file immediately. Or you can add an older file version to a set of files to restore. Within a single set of files to restore, you can only download one version of the same file. In other words, you cannot create a set that contains a file that was backed up yesterday and also version of that file that was backed up last week. If you do need to restore more than one version of a file, you can download them separately, being sure that you save them on your computer with different names or locations. To see older versions of any file: 1. Log in by going to and entering your user name and password. 2. Click Restore Files next to the computer you want to restore. 3. In Web Restore, click Choose Files to Restore. 4. Find the file that you wish to see older versions. To view files, click on the folder. 30 Chapter 4: Restoring Files Troubleshooting Web Restore for Mac Files When restoring Mac files using the Web Restore method, certain files may not be restored correctly due to the way that the Mac OS file system stores these types of files and information about these files (i.e., metadata). In these instances, you will need to use the Online Backup client to restore the files. Information on common errors are described below. Why do I see extra files that I didn't back up? In Web Restore you may see files that you did not back up and are not on your computer. These are artifacts of the backup process that are shown only for a certain kind of Mac or Linux file. If you restore files, you do not need include them; however, no harm will result if you select them. Cannot Restore a File If you are seeing error messages when using Web Restore to restore a very small file, this may be due to how the Mac OS file system stores a particular kind of file and information about those kinds of files (metadata). You will need to use the Online Backup client to restore the file instead of Web Restore. Why do I see a folder with the same name as a file? If you see a file you want to restore and a folder with the same name as the file which you did not create or back up, this is due to how the Mac OS file system stores a particular kind of file and information about those kinds of files (metadata). The Online Backup client is the best way to restore these types of files. The software client reassembles these parts to show you only the file you need, rather than the file and the metadata separately. It is easier for you to select, and it will restore successfully. If you need to restore using Web Restore, you must select both the file and the folder. When you get the file back onto your computer, if you find that it is not usable, you will need to use the Online Backup software to restore the file. Expected File Not Restored If a file that you restore is available as several different files which you cannot use, this is due to how the Mac OS file system stores a particular kind of file and information about those kinds of files (metadata). You will need to use the Online Backup client to restore the file instead of Web Restore. The software client reassembles these parts to show you only the file you need, rather than the file and the metadata separately...namedfork/rsrc Error in Restore Manager If you notice an error message that contains..namedfork/rsrc when using Web Restore, this may be due to how the Mac OS file system stores a particular kind of file and information about those kinds of files (metadata). If you look again for the file you intended to restore using Web Restore, you may see a file and also see a folder with the same name as the file which you did not create or back up. If you need to restore using Web Restore, you must select both the file and the folder. When you get the file back onto your computer, if you find that it is not usable, you will need to use the Online Backup software to restore the file. 31 Chapter 5: Online Backup User Portal You can access your Online Backup account online at where you can rest your password and restore files from the Web. For details on Web Restore, see page 28. The following topics are discussed in this chapter: Accessing Account Online Resetting Password Accessing Account Online 1. To log into your account online, go to 2. Enter your address and password in the appropriate fields, then click Log In. 3. To log out of your online account, click Log Out in the Account Pages menu on the left side of the page. Alternately, click Log Out in the upper right corner of the page while you are logged in to the system. Resetting Password If you reset your password, you will have to enter the new password in the Online Backup client to continue backing up your files. 1. To reset your password, go to 2. Click Forgot your password. 3. Enter your address, then click Reset Password. 4. Click Continue. An is sent to the listed address with a link to reset your password. 5. Click the link in the Enter your new password. Your password must contain at least 8 characters. 7. Click Continue. Your password has been changed in your online account; however, you must enter your new password in Online Backup as well. 8. Click the Online Backup icon in the menu bar, then choose Open Online Backup Preferences. 9. When prompted for your password, type your new password in the appropriate field, then click Login. 32 Chapter 6: Uninstalling Online Backup 1. Go to System Preferences and click the Online Backup icon to open Online Backup Settings. 2. Click the Summary Tab. 3. Click the Uninstall button. If you intend to reinstall Online Backup later, you should save your configurationn file. The configuration file saves your backup sets and other settings for the client software. 4.
