CONNECTING THE SYSTEM Audio Connections Connect audio connections as shown in the diagram below. A Tascam TDIF cable must be connected from the TDIF port of the DTRS machine to the TDIF Port of the 328XD. The TDIF connection allows two way digital transfer between the 328XD and the Tascam DTRS. The outputs of the 328XD can be configured to be either direct outputs for input channels 1-8 to the DTRS, or the 328XD s 8 Group outputs. Synchronization Connections Besides the audio connections, a BNC Wordclock cable must be connected from the 328XD Wordclock Out to the DTRS Wordsync Input to synchronize the transmission of the samples. NOTE: If MIDI Timecode (MTC) and MIDI Machine Control (MMC) are to be used to transmit timecode, transport controls and record arming, it is essential that and SY-88 board is fitted to a DA-88. A MIDI cable must be connected from the 328XD MIDI Out to the SY-88 MIDI In and a MIDI cable must be connected from the SY-88 MIDI Out to the 328XD MIDI In. 2
To summarize, the connections required are as follows: BNC Wordclock cable: 328XD Wordclock out DTRS Wordsync In MIDI Cables: 328XD MIDI Out DTRS MIDI In (if present) DTRS MIDI Out (if present) 328XD MIDI In Tascam TDIF Cable: 328XD 8 Track A TDIF DTRS TDIF Port 3
328XD CONFIGURATION Wordclock In a configuration using one or two DTRS machines, the 328XD must be made to be the Wordclock Master device. Enter the 328XD Menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button on the right hand side of the LCD display. Using the PARAM encoder beneath the display, scroll up or down until the Clock Source Sel menu is highlighted, and press <ENTER>. Here, either the internal sampling rate can be toggled between 44.1kHz and 48kHz, depending on which is required. Use the PARAM encoder to toggle the clock rate, press <ENTER> to set the sample rate and <MENU> to return to the menu pages. Tape Ports To ensure that the 328XD digital inputs are set to TDIF, enter the 328XD Menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button on the right hand side of the LCD display. Using the encoder beneath the display, scroll up or down until the Tape Port Select menu is highlighted. Press <ENTER> and keep pressing the Up cursor key until the <Tape Ch17-24 > menu page is displayed. Using the encoder, set the Bank Source to TDIF. Press the Down cursor key once, to set the wordlength. Note that the wordlength required for all non-hr DA machines is 16 bit. Use the PARAM encoder to set the wordlength. When using the console with TDIF devices, the Sample Rate Flag must also be set to be the same frequency at which the 328XD is currently operating, whether it is configured to be a master or slave wordclock device. Press the Down cursor key to set the Sample Rate Flag. Use the PARAM encoder to adjust, and press <MENU> to return to the menu pages. 4
MIDI To configure the 328XD to send the MMC controls to the DTRS and vice versa, the DTRS option must be selected in the Tape Machine Setup menu. Enter the Menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button, and scroll up or down with the PARAM encoder until the Tape Mach Setup menu is highlighted. Press <ENTER>, scroll until Tascam DTRS is highlighted and press <ENTER> again. NOTE: For MMC operation of the DA-38, the MMC-38 unit must be used and selected in the Tape Machine Setup menu. Once the Machine Type has been selected, the timecode source must be selected. This should be set to MTC. The frame rate must also be selected. The options are 24 frame, 25 frame, 30 drop frame and 30 nondrop frame. Whichever is selected here must also be selected later when setting up the DTRS. Once the 328XD has been set up, it is very advisable to store a User Setup of the above settings. Enter the Menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button and scroll through the menus until User Setups is highlighted. Press <ENTER> and scroll through to find a vacant setup location. Press <STORE> in the 328XD Snapshot panel. 5
DA78HR CONFIGURATION NOTE: Pages of the DA-78HR manual should be consulted when setting up the unit with the configuration below The DA-78HR menus must be configured as illustrated in the table below in order to complete the setup. To enter the DA-78HR menus, press the <SHIFT> key so that the LED is illuminated, indicating that the unit is in 'shift' mode. Press the <MENU> switch - 'System' should appear in the display. To enter the menu press the <SUBMENU> switch until the time mode submenu appears in the display. Use the up and down cursor keys (<AUTO MON> / <ALL INPUT>) to set the values as below. DA-78HR Submenu Recommended setting Notes Menu System - - time mode Abs d. in TDIF 24 bit is optimum wordlength Audio 1 TDIF 24 ensure that this setting is also set in the 328XD Tape Port Select menu dith off The 328XD adds dither to 16 and 20 bit signals frm mode Same as 328XD setting tc - - out tc tmg digital out tc src tape tc MIDI on Enables MMC and MTC MTC on MIDI Fast MTC on DA-78HR transmits timecode when in fast wind mode Stop MTC on DA-78HR transmits timecode when stopped 6
DA88 CONFIGURATION Turn on the DA-88 and allow a few seconds for the DA-88 to boot correctly. Once the DA-88 is stable, the setup procedure can be followed. The DA-88 will detect the sample rate of a loaded cassette. NOTE: The 328XD should be set to this sample rate in the Clock Source Sel menu (see page 4). However, the DA-88 must be set to receive external clock. Press the <CLOCK> button on the DA-88 until the LED indicates WORD. The LED should NOT flash, but remain lit. If the WORD LED flashes, firstly check that the cabling is correct and the 328XD clock settings have been entered correctly. The DA-88 must also be set up to receive the input from the TDIF input rather than the analogue inputs. To do this, press the <DIGITAL IN> button on the DA-88. To set up the DA-88 to receive the MIDI Machine Control commands for remote control from the 328XD s transport control, the DA-88 must be fitted with the Tascam SY-88 synchronization board. This board has a series of Mode Dip Switches, some of which must be set up correctly to work with the 328XD. The relevant settings are as follows: Switch 2: Switch 5: Switch 6: If the MIDI input is used for MMC control of the DA-88, the switch should be UP - if the RS-422 port is used for control of the DA-88, the switch should be DOWN; This switch should be set to UP as Timecode is then transmitted with reference to the digital audio output; This switch should be set to DOWN for Timecode is to be transmitted from the DA-88 to the 328XD. For further information the Tascam SY-88 manual should be consulted. To complete the setup, turn on the 328XD again. 7
DA98 / DA98HR CONFIGURATION Turn on the DA-98 and allow a few seconds for the DA-98 to boot correctly. Once the DA-98 is stable, the setup procedure can be followed. The DA-98 will detect the sample rate of a loaded cassette. NOTE: The 328XD should be set to this sample rate in the Clock Source Sel menu (see page 4). However, the DA-98 must be set to receive external clock. Press the <CLOCK> button on the DA-98 until the LED indicates WORD. The LED should NOT flash, but remain lit. If the WORD LED flashes, firstly check that the cabling is correct and the 328XD clock settings have been entered correctly. The DA-98 must also be set up to receive the input from the TDIF input rather than the analogue inputs. To do this, press the <DIGITAL IN> button on the DA-98. Enter menu #3 on the DA-98 to set up the control protocol and remote track arming: With the cursor keys select the Ctrl Prt menu to set the control protocol, press <ENTER> on the DA-98 and select MIDI for MMC control or 9-Pin for Sony 9-Pin control, if the cable is connected: Press <ENTER> to confirm, select Trk Arm with the cursor keys and press <ENTER> again. Set the remote track arming function to enable and press <ENTER> to confirm and <ESCAPE> to return to the main menu page. Enter menu #5 to configure the timecode settings for the DA-98. The following submenus should be available: 8
Enter the TC Frame submenu. Set the frame rate to the same as set in the 328XD timecode setup. Press <ENTER> to confirm and enter the OutTc Tmg menu. Set this to Digital so the timecode is output from the DA-98 with reference to the digital output rather than the analogue output. Press <ENTER> to confirm and enter the OutTc Src submenu. Set this to Tape (Abs) so that the DA-98 timecode generation is referenced from the loaded DTRS cassette. Press <ENTER> to confirm and <ESCAPE> to return to the main menu page. Enter menu #7 to enable or disable MTC output, as required. The following submenus should appear: Enter the MTC Out submenu and enable or disable the MTC output. If MTC is to be used, Fast and Stop should also be set in this menu. NOTE: With a DA-98HR, 24 bit wordlength can be selected. If this is set to on, 24 bit should also be set as the wordlength in the 328XD Tape Port Select menu (see page 4). 9
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DA88 Model Differences There are 4 different generations of DA-88, numbered conveniently from 1 4. A wordclock incompatibility exists between Version 4 DA-88s and earlier models. Operation of a Version 4 DA-88 in conjunction with an earlier model requires a Version 4 Tascam DA-88 system board to be fitted to the earlier generation machine. Operation of two Version 4 DA-88s or operation of any two units from generations 1-3 does not present these problems and no system board change is required. MIDI Machine Control of two DTRS machines The MIDI Machine Control (MMC) of the DA series allows transport controls to be controlled from the 328. Record Enable MMC is also implemented into the DA machines. The DA-98 and DA-78HR do not require additional hardware, but in order for MMC DTRS Sync to be used on the DA-38 and DA-88, additional hardware is required. With the DA-38, the MMC-38 unit must be used, and with the DA-88 either the MMC-38 may be used or an SY-88 board may be fitted. The MMC-38 and SY-88 have the same functionality as far as the 328XD is concerned both output SMPTE and MTC.
