2 MimioStudio 8 Notebook Overview 2 MimioStudio Notebook is a digital lesson planner. Existing PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Word files can be imported into the Notebook to make them more interactive. MimioStudio Notebook allows for annotation and interaction during a lesson or activity. To open MimioStudio Notebook, double click on the MimioStudio Notebook icon on your desktop. Mimio Notebook will automatically open to a New Page. The picture below shows the MimioStudio Notebook. You can create lessons, activities and assessments with the software.

3 MimioStudio Notebook A. The MimioStudio Notebook is where slides are created and stored. B. The standard toolbar contains various tools for lesson preparation and presentation. C. The MimioStudio Tools contain all of the drawing tools and resources that come with MimioStudio. D. 4 4 MimioStudio ActivityWizard The ActivityWizard is a digital activity planner that lets users create an activity to be inserted into the Notebook. Users can generate activities and automatically add relevant content. The ActivityWizard includes activities and templates identified by grade or age and subject matter to ensure all activities are age-appropriate. How to Use ActivityWizard: To start the wizard, open a new or existing Notebook. 1. Choose New Activity from the Insert menu. 2. The wizard will prompt you to choose a Subject, Grade Level and, Template. 3. Next, you will select the topic, categories, and when to reveal answers. 4. Then, you will redefine the choice pool by selecting items to include or exclude and by adjusting the number of items. Click Next to immediately accept the default items. 5. Review the activity and write a student-focused objective. 6. Click Finish.

5 MimioStudio 8 Tools Overview 5 MimioStudio 8 provides interactive tools that can be used within the MimioStudio Notebook and outside of the MimioStudio Notebook (on a web page, a PDF, Power- Point, Word document, etc). Below is a representation of the Mimio toolbar with labels. Toolbar Hint #1: Drag the toolbar to a desired location by clicking and dragging the blue bar at the top. Toolbar Hint #2: Double click the image of the paintbrush to compress the toolbar! Pen, Brush, Highlighter, Eraser and Select Tools The Mimio pen, brush, highlighter, and eraser all work similarly. Pick the tool you want to draw with (pen, brush, highlighter, or eraser) and begin drawing in the Mimio notebook. How to Use the Pen/Brush/Highlighter Tools: 1. Click on the Pen/Brush/Highlighter Tool button. 2. Place the cursor where you want the stroke to start on the page. 3. Drag the cursor to draw. How to Erase Ink and Highlighting: 1. Click the Eraser button. 2. Drag the cursor over the strokes you want to erase. Note: Only pen, brush and highlighter can be erased. How to Use the Selection Tool: 1. After drawing with the pen or highlighter tools, click the Selection Tool and then click the line that you drew by touching it with the MimioTeach stylus. 2. You can now click on and drag objects. 3. To resize an object, click the object again and adjust the size by using the corner "handles" on the object. 4. The object can also be rotated by clicking and moving the green "handle" on the object. 5. Objects can be deleted by clicking on an object with the selection tool, then clicking the delete key on the keyboard, or clicking the red X on the Standard Toolbar.

6 Changing Color and Thickness of Pen, Highlighter and Eraser To change colors and thicknesses of pens, highlighters, and erasers, refer to the steps below. 6 To adjust the width, drag the Thickness slider. To adjust the color, click Outline Color then select a color from the Color Palette before using the tool. For additional color choices click More colors and choose additional colors for your tools. To adjust the transparency, click the Transparency button, and then choose a percentage of transparency. Color Picker and Object Fill Color Picker: Use the Color Picker to select any color from the desktop and use as a fill color. How to use the Color Picker: 1. Select the Color Picker. 2. Click anywhere on the desktop and in any program to select a color. 3. The tool will revert to the fill bucket automatically. Click on the background in MimioStudio or in an object to fill with the chosen color. Object Fill: Use the Object Fill to fill the background and/or any object created with the Mimio Line/Shape/Shape Recognition tool.

7 7 Lines, Shapes, and Shape Recognition Line Tools: Draw straight lines and arrows. How to create a line: 1. Click the Line button. 2. To change the line type, click the Line button down and choose a line type from the list. 3. To adjust the line width, drag the Thickness slider. 4. To change the color, click on Outline Color then select a color from the Color Palette. 5. For additional color choices click More colors. 6. To adjust the transparency of the line, click the Transparency button and then choose a transparency percentage. 7. Place the cursor where you want the line to start on the page. 8. Drag the cursor to draw the line. Line Styles: Select this tool to customize a line using the line tool or the outline of the shapes. Shape Tools: Draw either empty (transparent) or filled shapes. How to add a shape: 1. Select the type of shape to draw from the Shape button 2. To adjust the outline width, drag the Thickness slider. 3. To change the outline color, select the Outline Color box, and then select a color from the Color Palette, then draw the shape. For additional color choices click More Colors. 4. To adjust the fill color, select the Fill Color box, and then select a color from the Color Palette. 5. For additional color choices click More Colors. 6. To adjust the transparency of the shape, click the Transparency button and then choose a transparency percentage. 7. Place the cursor where you want the shape to start on the page, and click. 10. Hold the click and drag the cursor to draw the shape. Shape Recognition: The Shape Recognition tool can be used to draw circles, ellipses, triangles, rectangles, squares and lines.

8 Gallery The Mimio Gallery has resources for creating lessons and teaching. The resources include images, template backgrounds, graphic organizers, multimedia, and template lessons. 8 Click the Gallery icon to open the Gallery window: The Gallery content is sorted into 4 folders: Gallery: contains various folders (Mathematics, Language Arts, etc.) Questions and Results: contains materials used with Mimio Vote. Imported Content Packs: includes content that you have imported but is not in your gallery yet. Screen Annotations: contains any snapshots from screen annotations done within MimioStudio. Each folder contains subfolders. There are 5 subfolders: 1. Images: contains pictures and graphics. 2. Templates: contains background and created page layouts. 3. Multimedia: contains movies, animation, and sound files. 4. Questions and Results: contains objects to create results of MimioVote questions. 5. Lessons: contains lessons and activities you have saved in MimioStudio Notebook. Hint: Search for objects by clicking on the folder titled Gallery then typing what you are searching for into the search field. Once you have found something that you want to use from the gallery, drag it into the Mimio Notebook page. Customizing the Content of the MimioStudio Gallery: The Gallery is fully expandable and modifiable, so you can add your own folders, pictures, templates, multimedia items and lessons. Click on New Folder to create a new Gallery folder or subfolder. Click on Insert File to add Pictures, Video, Audio, Flash,.ink files from your computer to a gallery folder. Click on Import Content to add a.mcf (Mimio Gallery Content File) located on your computer into your Gallery. Click on Export Content to save a gallery file to your computer as a.mcf file. Drag content you have created into your folder from the MimioStudio Notebook page.

9 Applications The Mimio Toolbar contains a number of applications that can be launched from the MimioStudio toolbar. 9 When the applications button is selected, the following applications will appear: Reveal, Spotlight, Text Tools, Quick Vote, Recorder, View, and More Tools (contains Calculator, Magnify, and Web Browser. Reveal Tool: The Reveal tool creates a shade that can be raised, lowered, moved left, and moved right over the screen image. How to Use the Reveal Tool: 1. Click on the Applications button on the Toolbar and click Reveal. 2. To adjust the revealed area, click inside the shaded area and drag up, down, or sideways to reveal more or less of the displayed area. 3. To adjust the transparency of the revealed area, right click or click the blue icon at the top right of the Reveal Tool and select transparent. Then choose a percentage. 4. To exit the Reveal Tool, click the red close button at the top right of the Reveal Tool or right click and exit. Spotlight Tool: The spotlight tool allows you to focus the student s attention on a specific area of the screen. The spotlight can be reshaped, resized and moved around the screen. How to Use the Spotlight Tool: 1. Click on the Applications button on the Toolbar and click on Spotlight. 2. To resize the spotlight, select the blue border of the spotlight with the mouse and drag outward or inward. 3. To adjust the shape of the spotlight, select the blue icon at the top right, select shapes and chose the desired shape. 4. To change the transparency, right click or click the blue icon at the top right of the select transparent. Then choose a percentage. 5. To move the spotlight around the screen, click on the gray area near the spotlight, and move your cursor around the screen. 6. To exit the Spotlight Tool, click the red close button at the top right or right click and exit.

10 Applications Continued Text Tools: Text can be entered into any text-entry box, field or page using the Text Tool. The On-Screen Keyboard allows you to enter text through an on-screen keyboard application. How to Access the Text Tool: 1. Click the Applications button and click Text Tools. 2. The On-Screen Keyboard will appear. If not, the keyboard can be accessed by selecting the Mimio Text Tools icon in the Taskbar. 3. Click the cursor in the text-entry box, field or page where you want to enter text. 4. Using the mouse or MimioTeach stylus, press the virtual keys on the on-screen keyboard. The text is entered into the text entry box, field or page selected. Recorder: Mimio Recorder allows you to record your Mimio interactions as an AVI movie file with the option to record audio as well. The open application on your desktop will be recorded once the recording feature has been activated. Mimio Recorder allows you to record video which can then be embedded into your Mimio lesson. How to Use the Recorder: 1. Open Mimio Notebook and the application with the video you would like to record. 2. Click on the Applications button on the Toolbar and click Recorder. 3. The recorder control will look like this picture to the right: 4. Click the drop down arrow next to the red record button. Select Record Area. A gray transparency then covers the entire desktop. 5. Drag the cursor to draw a selection box around the area to capture. 6. The selected area will automatically begin recording. 7. To stop recording, select the video recorder icon in systems tray at bottom right of desktop or from the Toolbar and click the stop button. Video recorder icon 8. To preview a recording, click the Play button. 9. You will always be prompted with a window that asks if you want to save recording. See Importing Files and Documents into MimioStudio Notebook to read about how to import a recording.

11 Applications Continued Applications found in More Tools: Calculator: The calculator triggers the basic Windows calculator. It will pop up and allow you to tap a problem in and get an answer. You can then copy and paste that number into MimioStudio Notebook or any other application, if you would like. How to Use the Calculator: 1. Click on the Applications button, then click on More Tools then click on Calculator. 2. When the calculator pops up, use the stylus to tap in a math problem. Magnifier: Magnify is the basic windows magnifier. This magnifier will launch a viewing box that will show the portion of your screen blown up. The view will be of the area that your mouse is pointing at. How to Use the Magnifier: 1. Click the Applications button, then click on More Tools then click on Calculator. 2. Drag the mouse over area you wish to magnify. Web Browser: The web browser simply launches the computer s default internet browser. How to Use the Web Browser: 1. Click the Applications button, then click on More Tools then click on Web Browser. 2. Your internet browser will open in a new window. Importing Files and Documents into MimioStudio Notebook: You can import Documents (Word, PowerPoint, PDF document), and Multimedia Objects (Audio, Video and Flash files) into Mimio studio. How to Import Documents and Objects into MimioStudio Notebook: 1. Click on the Import File button in the MimioStudio toolbar. (Located underneath the Line/Shape tool.) 2. Select the file to import and click Open. 3. The document/object is inserted into the Notebook. (When loading documents, you can view the status of the import by looking in the bottom left corner of the screen. It will say Loading Document until the document has been completely loaded.) Import File

12 Screen Clipping The screen clipping feature allows you to capture an area of any open application (Internet browser, PowerPoint, PDF, Picture, Word, etc) on the computer and bring it into the Notebook as an image. 12 How to Insert a Screen Clipping: 1. Open the document that you would like to screen clip from. 2. Click on the Screen Clipping button from the MimioStudio Tools. Screen Clipping 2. A gray transparency covers the entire desktop. 3. Drag the cursor to draw a selection box around the area you would like to capture. 4. The selected area will automatically be inserted into the Notebook page that is open. Screen Annotation: Screen Annotation allows you to annotate over any open application (web page, picture, Word document, PowerPoint, PDF, image from document camera, etc) that is on your computer.) All of the Mimio tools that can be used in the notebook are available in this mode. How to Enable and Exit Screen Annotation Mode: 1. Open the document you would like to Annotate. 2. Click the Screen Annotation button. This will freeze the current desktop image and a green border will appear around the desktop. 2. Annotate the screen with any of the tools available in MimioStudio Tools. Mouse Screen Annotation Hint: All Screen Annotations are automatically saved in the Screen Annotations folder in the Gallery.

13 Assigning Actions to Objects and Text 13 Hyperlinking: You can hyperlink from any object (text, drawing, image, etc) that you create within MimioStudio Notebook. The hyperlink can open any file on your computer, a web page or another MimioStudio Notebook (.ink) file. How to hyperlink: 1. Select the object you want to hyperlink from by clicking on it. 2. From the Insert menu, choose Hyperlink OR right click on the selected object and choose Hyperlink. 3. Select the action that will activate the hyperlink by clicking on the dropdown menu next to Action. (You can either activate a hyperlink by clicking it, or dragging it.) 4. Make sure that the Feature selected is Launch Hyperlink. To change the feature, click on the dropdown menu next to Feature. 5. Select what you want the object to hyperlink to by clicking on the dropdown menu next to Link to. -To link to an Internet page, select Existing File or Web Page from the dropdown menu. Then, type the address of the web page you would like to hyperlink to into the blank box next to Address. -To link to a file on your computer, select Browse and click on the file you want to hyperlink to. -To link to another page in your Mimio file, simply select the page number you want to hyperlink to. 6. Click Ok when you are finished. How to remove a hyperlink: 1. Right click on the object you have hyperlinked. 2. Select Hyperlink from the drop down menu. 3. Next to Feature, select None. The hyperlink will be removed. Cloning: You can clone any object to create a copy of that object on the same page. How to clone an object: 1. Select the object you want to clone by clicking on it. 2. From the Insert menu, choose Actions Settings OR right click on the selected object and choose Actions Settings. 3. Select the action that will activate the cloning by clicking on the dropdown menu next to Action. (You can either activate a hyperlink by clicking it, or dragging it.) 4. Make sure that the Feature selected is Clone. To change the feature, click on the dropdown menu next to Feature. 5. Now, you will be able to create multiple copies of the object you have cloned by simply clicking and dragging the object.

14 14 Grouping, Locking and Changing the Order of Objects To group multiple objects together, change the order of objects or lock an object to the page, you must select the object(s) you want to apply this function to. Grouping and Ungrouping of Objects: 1. Select the objects you would like to group or ungroup. 2. From the Format menu, select Grouping and then Group to group all selected objects as one object. 3. Select Ungrouping and then Ungroup for all selected objects to be independent from each other. Changing the order of Objects: 1. Select the object to reorder. 2. From the Format menu, choose Order. 3. Choose how to order the object. Locking and Unlocking Objects: 1. Select the object you want to lock to the page. 2. From the Format menu, select Locking to lock an object(s) to the page. Select Unlock to allow objects to move and be manipulated in the Notebook. Note: You can access the Grouping, Ordering and Locking function by right clicking on the object you want to apply these features to. Changing Your View in MimioStudio Notebook: You can choose to change the way you view the standard toolbar, thumbnail images, and pages. Changing the position of the standard toolbar: When you initially open MimioStudio notebook, your standard toolbar will be located at the top of the Notebook page. To change its location: 1. Click the View menu. Hover over Standard Toolbar. (This will give you three options for the new 2. location of the toolbar. You can select to turn it off, move it to the top of the page, or to the bottom of the page.)

15 Changing Your View in MimioStudio Notebook Continued... Viewing Thumbnail Slides: 15 You have the option of viewing thumbnails of the pages you have created in MimioStudio Notebook. 1. Select the View menu. Hover over Tab View. (This will give you three options for the location of the thumbnails. You can select to keep them off of the page, move them to the left side of the page, or to the right side of the page.) 2. Click on any of the thumbnails to open that particular page. Thumbnails Entering and Exiting Full screen Mode: Full screen mode enlarges the page to provide a better view of the lesson or activity in MimioStudio Notebook. 1. Select the View menu. Click on Full screen or Click on the Full screen button located on the standard toolbar. 2. When you are ready to exit full screen mode, click the escape key on your keyboard, or click on the Full screen button located on the standard toolbar.

16 Quick Tips: 16 How to insert page transitions in between slides: 1. Select the Insert menu. Click on Page Transitions. 2. Click on the various types of transitions to preview them. 3. Click on the dropdown menu underneath Apply To to choose whether you want to apply the transition to all slides or selected slides. (You will select slides by first going into thumbnail view and clicking on the selected slides. Hold down Control key on your keyboard to select multiple slides. 4. To delete a page transition, follow steps 1 and 2, then select None instead of a page transition. How to insert a background color: 1. Select the Insert menu. Click on Background. 2. Click on the Color button. Select the color of your choice. 3. Check the box next to All New Pages to apply the color choice to all pages. 4. Click on the dropdown menu underneath Apply To in order to choose to apply the color to all current pages you have created. How to insert a duplicate page: 1. Click on Insert in the menu, then select Duplicate Page. A copy of the page you are currently on will be created. How to use Fixed Aspect Ratio: To keep an object you created or from the gallery the same size, enable Fixed Aspect Ratio. (Gallery objects are already set with Fixed Aspect Ratio for your convenience). To change the images width or height, disable Fixed Aspect Ratio. How to enable or disable Fixed Aspect Ratio: 1. Go to Format in the Menu Bar to access Fixed Aspect Ratio with the object selected. Or, right click on the object and select Fixed Aspect Ratio to enable or disable function.
