1 CVEN 2012 GEOMATICS LAB SPRING 2016 INTRO TO ESRI ARCGIS Objectives 1. Download and Add Data into ArcMap 2. Symbolize and Label Features 3. Navigate and Investigate the Map 4. Explore Attributes and Metadata 5. ADD DATA INTO ARCMAP Download & Unzip Data (shapefiles): Boulder County GIS Data Open a browser window and select 1 st link on searching for Boulder county GIS download /pages/gisdldata.aspx About halfway down, under the Disaster section, download the two.zip files that begin with Flood 2013* Colorado DOT Data Also on the same Boulder GIS web portal, at the top, follow the link to the CDOT data Select Data Catalog on the left Enter Boulder in search box Choose the Downloadable GIS data link (single file; extracts multiple files)

ADD DATA INTO ARCMAP Open ArcMap Start ArcGIS ArcMap 10.2 On opening, click OK for blank map Set Folder Connection Right side of window, Catalog pane Default download location was: C:\Users\xxxx1234\Downloads Add the.shp Data (see right image) to ArcMap Catalog pane (drag & drop, one at a time), or, File Add Data Add Data Add 2 Boulder County Flood.shp (shapefiles) Add 6 CDOT.shp: Cities, Rail Lines, Streams, Highways, Major Roads, Local Roads Click Close for the GCS warning pop-up Good idea to save work periodically, as.mxd file

SYMBOLIZE & LABEL FEATURES First, familiarize yourself with screen layout Map pane in center, Table of Contents (TOC) at left Toolbars and Menu at top, Catalog/Search at far right, etc. Get Help from: Tool Tips, Search pane, top menu bar, F1 Change symbols for Streams, Rails and Roads layers Click symbol in Table of Contents pane, select new symbol / options Or, right-click the layer, Layer Properties at bottom, Symbology tab Add labels for Cities, Highways Right-click the layer in TOC, Layer Properties at bottom, Labels tab Select Label Field and choose style; note Placement Properties at lower left Also don t forget to click Label features in this layer at the top! Quick and easy toggle for Label Features if you just right-click the layer in TOC again, about half-way down

SYMBOLIZE & LABEL FEATURES Change Symbology for Rainfall layer to reflect amounts Right-click the layer, Layer Properties at bottom, Symbology tab In left pane, select Quantities Graduated Colors Choose Fields - Value = RainfallMa (rainfall max) at top center Change Color Ramp if you like (and what does right-clicking it do?) Note Classification options (upper right) can be changed too And midsection, you can edit Labels Click Apply or Ok when finished One more thing to make it blend in with other area layers: Open Layer Properties again, choose Display tab Adjust Transparent % at top In TOC, click & drag polygon layers up/down to change hierarchy

9 3. NAVIGATE & INVESTIGATE Navigation icons on top toolbar: Zoom in/out (mouse wheel zooms too) Pan Extent: full, previous/forward, etc. Select Elements tool recommended you always reset to this Magnifying glass Windows Magnifier Then click and drag mouse to move it around

10 3. NAVIGATE & INVESTIGATE Measure tool Choose Units (down arrow next to the sigma) Click & release on start point on map, click again on end point Note snapping enabled How many miles north-tosouth and east-to-west is the area of largest rainfall covering Boulder?

11 3. NAVIGATE & INVESTIGATE Identify tool Which creeks run through Jamestown, and how much did it rain there? May help to set Selectable Features to only allow selection of Streams Selectable Features In left TOC pane, see icons at top; choose 4 th one, List by Selection Then turn off/on selectable layers below it Then can use Selectable Features options and Clear Selected Features icons on top toolbar

12 4. ATTRIBUTES & METADATA Attribute table Right-click a layer, choose Open Attribute Table Note # rows at bottom; also can show only selected rows How many rows in the Highways table? Right-click a numeric column and choose Statistics How much area was flooded in total?

ATTRIBUTES & METADATA Metadata = data about your data: how prepared, descriptions, etc. Catalog pane at right: right click, choose Item Description ArcCatalog is a separate application (Start ArcGIS ArcCatalog 10.2); can also edit metadata there If you were a planner for the City of Boulder and wanted to use the Flood Inundated Areas data, how useful do you think the data would be?

CREATE A MAP LAYOUT Bottom left of mapping pane: Layout View Up to now we ve been in Data View Can toggle back and forth with these buttons Layout View is for presentation Layout toolbar becomes active on selecting Layout View E.g. to let you pan the Layout not the Data view The Insert menu has map presentation elements; standard practice to at least include: Title Legend North Arrow Scale Bar or Text

15 WHAT ELSE IS POSSIBLE? Many possibilities for finding data Government websites (federal, state, county, city) Census, USGS, etc. ArcGIS Online (under File menu) More ArcGIS Capabilities Rasters (aka surfaces / continuous data, e.g. a satellite image, elevation) Editing features Analysis & Modeling: ArcToolbox, ModelBuilder, ArcPy, create Add-ins Could we map our project data in ArcGIS? Not the best tool for this project, but does cover some needs Complications with: coordinate system, uploading points, symbolizing, editing features, layout axes tick marks, print layout, etc.
