6 Introduction 1.0 Introduction This document provides a guide to use the Intel System Debugger on 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit Based on Intel Intelligent System Extended Evaluation Kit (Intel ISX Evaluation Kit) Form Factor Reference Design (formerly code named Broad Island platform). The target users are developers who need to evaluate IA Platform with 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit Based Intel ISX Evaluation Kit, or Intel System Studio, or both. 1.1 Platform Configuration The target platform is the Intel 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit (formerly Broad Island). The package of Intel System Studio includes ISS2016 Update 2 Ultimate Edition Linux* Host. The sample OS is Ubuntu* LTS. 1.2 Terminology Table 1. 8 2.0 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit The (formally code named Broad island) is a complete system in a chassis based on the Intel Intelligent System Extended (Intel ISX) form factor reference design with the 5th generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor, 2 x4 GB (512 M x 64) 204-pin DDR3L 1600 MHz SDRAM unbuffered SODIMM, 64 GB SSD, a/b/g/n Wi-Fi* module with dual antennas. 9 Intel System Debugger 3.0 Intel System Debugger Intel System Debugger is a JTAG-based debugger and a trace tool of Intel System Studio targeted toward embedded, intelligent systems, Internet of Things, mobile, PC, and server designs. Figure 2. Intel System Debugger The Intel System Debugger provides Linux* or Windows* hosted cross-debug solutions for software developers to debug BIOS, Linux kernel, dynamically loaded drivers, and kernel modules for Intel Quark SoC (using OpenOCD), Intel Atom processor, and Intel Core and Intel Xeon based platforms. The hardware probe can be In-Target Probe extended Debug Port (ITP-XDP), or Closed Chassis Adapter, or USB 3.0 Debug Cable, or two of them, or all of them, depending on target platform. Figure 3. 10 Intel System Debugger 3.1 Product Edition There are three product editions of Intel System Studio listed below. Only the Ultimate Edition includes the Intel System Debugger Composer Edition: Tools to build performance-optimized code Professional Edition: Everything in Composer Edition plus tools to analyze performance, power efficiency, and code correctness Ultimate Edition: Everything in the Professional Edition plus system-wide debug and trace for more robustness 3.2 System Trace Tool and Processor Trace The System Trace Tool and Processor Trace feature of Intel System Debugger are not enabled on the. Check with your local Intel representative if developers need to enable the above features on a specific IA platform. 11 Use the Intel System Debugger on 4.0 Use the Intel System Debugger on 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit To evaluate, or Intel System Studio, or both, it is required to install OS and Intel System Studio. This document along with the ISS2016 Update 2 Ultimate Edition Windows Host package on the host machine provides developers guidance on how to use Intel System Debugger to debug the target the 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit Ubuntu platform. Developers also may refer to "Getting Started with the Intel System Debugger," which will be opened via Internet Explorer automatically after Intel System Debugger installation. Developers may open this page directly from C:\Program Files(x86)\IntelSWTools\documentation_2016\en\debugger\iss2016\sy stem_debugger\get_started.htm. 4.1 Install Intel System Studio on Host Machine Refer to Intel System Studio 2016 Update 2 Installation Guide and Release Notes for details. Download the ISS Ultimate Windows host package system_studio_ exe and install it on the host machine. Then download the latest version 2016 (U1609) of Intel System Debugger and install it. The installation process may be stopped at following step. Click the Next button and move forward. (See Figure 4.) Install Intel System Debugger If the Intel System Studio Ultimate package is not installed first, users will encounter following message while installing Intel System Debugger 2016 (U1609) directly. Error Message 4.2 Use Cases of the Intel System Debugger Launch Intel System Debugger Connect the host to the target 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit via ITP-XDP. Power on both the host and the target. Log into the host and go to C:\Program Files (x86)\intelswtools\system Debugger 2016\system_debug. Launch the Intel System Debugger via start_xdb_core_products.bat. Launch Intel System Debugger Connect to the Target Connect the host to the target platform by clicking the Connect button, or Ctrl + R, or go to menu bar and choose File to Connect. Figure 9. Initialization Complete Go to the menu bar. Click View and Hardware Threads to open Hardware Threads window. You see four hardware threads because this 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit platform has dual core and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology enabled. 16 Use the Intel System Debugger on Besides GUI manipulation, the Intel System Debugger also provides a command interface. For example, users may use Stop and Run commands at the Console View window to run control the target 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5350u Processor Evaluation Kit platform. Figure 10. 17 Use the Intel System Debugger on Figure 11. Run Command How to Deal with Breakpoint Breakpoint is one kind of essential debugger feature used by almost every developer. On the Intel System Debugger, users may right-click on any line from the Assembler window to create breakpoint as shown below. 18 Use the Intel System Debugger on Figure 12. Create Breakpoint Every breakpoint is identified with an ID# and is managed by Breakpoint window. Users may easily find the breakpoint, especially when doing source level debugging. To open the Breakpoint window, go to the menu bar and click breakpoint. Then release the target through entering the Run command and clicking the return key. Users see the program is stopped at the address at where the breakpoint was set. The set breakpoint command also can be used to manually create a breakpoint directly with a specified address as below. For example, enter set breakpoint at 0x0010:0xFFFFFFFF E, and then click return. Users see the second breakpoint is created at the address specified with ID# 1 assigned. Manually Create Breakpoint To remove breakpoints, go to the Breakpoint window, right-click, and choose Delete All to remove all of the breakpoints that have been set Access PCI Device and Get Registers Information To do system debugging, the device registers need to be checked most of the time. There is a simple way to access PCI devices. The first is to use GUI interface by clicking on the PCI Tool icon as shown below. 22 Use the Intel System Debugger on Besides the PCI tool to scan the devices, users also may use commands to directly get the register information with the specified BDF information. For example, use PCI SHOW REGISTERS /BUS=0 /DEV=31 /FUNC=2 /OFFSET=0x0 /LENTTH=4 on the Console View window and users get the SATA register information shown below. Through this manual command interface, users may acquire register information of the device, which may be missing from a scan of the PCI tool. In addition, users can acquire the BDF information from each platform s relative EDS/Datasheet. Figure 18. 23 Use the Intel System Debugger on Figure 19. View System Registers Access Memory Read memory, write to memory, and dump memory are basic debugger features. The Intel System Debugger, for example, can use the command SHOW MEMORY to read memory. Users also may run a script to read memory as shown below. Run Script to Read Memory Run Script Besides the GUI interface and command console interface, scripts also can be used on the Intel System Debugger to achieve job efficiency. The batch file must be saved with extension.xdb. The script file needs to be placed under bin folder of System Debugger folder. The command used to execute script is batch scriptfilename.xdb. Use the ReadMemory.xdb script below as reference to modify and create scripts.
