2 ABOUT THIS MANUAL This manual has been written to help you understand all the functions and capabilities of the Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool in order to gain the maximum benefi ts from the diagnostic tool. INTRODUCTION The diagnostic tool has been designed as a workshop service and diagnostic tool for diagnosis and testing of Engine Control Systems and related components. This tool provides a tremendous amount of information including: - Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) - Engine Sensor Data - Fuel Injection System Control Data - Engine Controller Identifi cation Information - Online and Offl ine capable - Live system updates The diagnostic tool is a very robust diagnostic tool that has been designed to provide diagnostic capabilities on Yamaha snowmobiles with onboard diagnostic ports. Additional vehicles and functions will be added to future updates to the software. Kit Contents Name Tool, Diagnostic Cable, Diagnostic USB (10 ) Harness, Diagnostic (10P) Harness,Diagnostic Filter Quick Start Guide Description Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool USB cable, tool to laptop Harness, tool to vehicle Filter harness, suppresses starter motor power feedback during starting while using the diagnostic tool. To be used if tool stops functioning during vehicle starting cycles. NOTE: The starter motor power feedback is not harmful to the tool.
3 System Requirements System Requirements - Computer Laptop computer (recommended) or PC in service/shop area - Operating System - Windows XP (SP3), Windows 7, Windows 8, 4 G ram (min), dual core processor recommended. Note: Windows Vista will not be supported. - Internet connection Special Safety Guidelines This safety section contains information that must be followed to avoid damage to the diagnostic tool, or serious injury or death to the operator. Please acknowledge this section - read it carefully. * Thoroughly read and understand the operating instructions befure using the tool. * Always make sure the diagnostic connections are clean and in good condition before connecting to a vehicle. * Verify that the vehicle battery is fully charged and in good condition before attempting to use the diagnostic tool. Low battery voltage WILL cause communication issues as well as produce invalid test results. * Always make sure an approved exhaust ventilation system is in place and being used and the work area being used is well ventilated whenever running an engine. Carbon monoxide gas is extremely poisonous and can lead to serious injury or death. * Always stay clear of moving parts and remove all loose clothing that can be caught in moving parts on the vehicle. * Always wear approved safety glasses or goggles as necessary. * Use extreme caution when working around batteries. Batteries can produce a highly explosive hydrogen gas that can cause the battery to explode without warning. * Always make sure diagnostic cables are free and clear of any belts, pulleys or other moving parts on the vehicle being tested. * Be sure diagnostic cables DO NOT come in contact with hot engine components such as exhaust manifold or engine block. * Never allow diagnostic cables to lie near or on any ignition system components such as coils or spark plug wires as electrical interference may occur and may cause damage to the diagnostic tool and/or computer. * Never allow cables to lie on the fl oor near or in puddles of water. Water may leak into the diagnostic connectors and cause serious damage.
4 Installing the Software Locate the Diagnostic Tool link as provided by Yamaha Motor Canada to install the software When the install process has started, the Setup Wizard window will appear. Select the Next > button to begin. The next screen will ask which users to install to. Select one of the options and then select the Next > button to continue. Now choose a location to install to. The default, recommended location will be displayed within the Destination Folder text box. Either accept this option, or select the Browse button and select a different destination folder. Then select the Next > button to continue.
5 Next, choose a start menu folder for the Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool shortcuts. The window will default to creating a new folder called Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool as shown in the text box. Either accept this option and create a new folder, change the text and create a new folder with a different name, select a different folder from the list box, or click the Do not create shortcuts check box. Then select the Install button to continue. The next screen will show the install progress. Wait while Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool installs. Once the install process is complete the following screen will be shown. Select the Next > button to continue.
6 Finally, the Setup Wizard screen will be shown confirming that Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool has been installed. Select the Finish button to close the Setup Wizard. The Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool application will launch automatically.
7 Logging In Once the Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool application is run, the following process is taken for logging in. After the Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool application has finished initializing, the following window will appear. Enter user name and password and select the CONTINUE button. Yamaha Motor Canada will supply the user with the "user name", "password" and "dealer number". Next, enter the dealer number and select the Next button to continue. Do not fill this in.
8 Updating the Software When starting up the Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool software, it will automatically check for updates. If an update is found, the following screen will be shown. NOTE: Internet access is required to perform a software update. Yamaha Motor Corporation recommends choosing Yes when a software update is available. NO IMAGE AVAILABLE Select either YES or NO. If NO is selected, the update window will close and an update prompt will appear upon the next software run. If YES is selected, the update will begin. Wait for the update to download. NO IMAGE AVAILABLE Once the update is downloaded, the installation process will need to be performed again. The setup wizard will start automatically when the update has finished downloading. Refer to the Installing the Software portion of this manual for help reinstalling.
9 Using the Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool Software Setting Up the Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool First, plug the female end of the adaptor cable into the corresponding male end of the diagnostic tool. Next, plug the upstream end of the USB cable into the computer and the downstream end into the diagnostic tool. The complete setup should look like the following picture.
10 Getting Started If previously logged in, the following initial window will appear. Select OPEN LAST CASE to load the last vehicle selected, otherwise select OPEN NEW CASE. If not previously logged in, refer to the Logging In portion of this manual for help. Icons Note the icons at the bottom of the application window: / / / / / Show / Hide side tool bar No devices / Devices connected No vehicle data / Vehicle connected Engine ECM not connected / Engine ECM connected Instrument cluster not connected / Instrument cluster connected The vehicle model and VIN number may be displayed at the bottom of the window.
11 Identify Under the VEHICLE SELECTION tab, there are several options when identifying a vehicle. (Make sure the vehicle s battery is fully charged, key is turned on and Yamaha Snowmobile Diagnostic Tool is connected before making a selection). NOTE: Please choose option applicable to the vehicle being serviced. Option 1 Click the AUTO IDENTIFICATION button. This will automatically select the vehicle and populate the text box with the VIN number of the vehicle. Option 2 Enter the complete VIN number (17 characters) of the vehicle in the text box and click the CONTINUE WITH VIN button. Option 3 Select a product from the PRODUCT LINE drop down list, select a year from the MODEL YEAR drop down list, and then select a vehicle from the VEHICLE drop down list. ECU information retrieved from the vehicle can be seen by selecting the ECUID tab. Select which ECU information is displayed from the drop down list. TYPES OF ECUs - ECM (Engine Control Module) - Instrument Cluster
12 Trouble Codes Under the TROUBLE CODES tab, trouble codes can be viewed and accessed. The icon shown next to the code indicates which ECU is producing the trouble code. Click the CLEAR TROUBLE CODES button to remove all trouble codes from the display and from the vehicle. Click on a trouble code to view its details. This will open the TROUBLE CODE DETAIL tab. Select the FREEZE FRAME tab to see numerical details about when the trouble code was activated. NOTE: If a code has been activated multiple times, the information displayed will be from the most current incident.
13 Sensor Data Under the SENSOR DATA tab, vehicle sensor data can be viewed. Data items can be added and removed using the + and - buttons in the lower right corner. If items are added or removed, the new set of items can be saved by clicking the SAVE SET button. Modified sets that have been saved or the default set can be loaded by clicking the LOAD SET button. Click the CLEAR LIST button to remove all items from a set. An item can be viewed in full screen mode by clicking the expand icon located at the far right position of an item s row ( ).
14 An item can be viewed graphically by clicking the graph icon located at the far right position of an item s row ( ). This will open the CHARTS tab and will allow for more items to be shown graphically by selecting them from the drop down lists located on the right. Click the PAUSE GRAPH button to stop recording data, and click the RESUME GRAPH to continue recording data. When paused, graph history can be viewed by moving the GRAPH HISTORY slide. Click and drag on the graph to select a section to zoom in on. Double click to zoom out. Items can be viewed as meter gauges by selecting the METERS tab. Items can be added, removed, or cleared, and sets can be saved or loaded using the same methods from the SENSOR DATA tab. The type of gauge can be changed by double clicking the item s gauge.
15 System Setup Dealer information can be viewed or edited under the DEALER INFORMATION tab. Click the SAVE button to save changes. Do not fill in. System configuration information can be viewed under the SYSTEM CONFIG tab. Language and unit preferences can be viewed or edited under the PREFERENCES tab. To edit, select new items from drop down lists and click the SAVE & RESTART button to save the changes.
