1 Technical Newsletter VOLUME 4, ISSUE 3 Remote Ethernet Device, RED-1 - TIPS & TRICKS RED-1 & RED-1F are the latest remote control options for Audia and Nexia.The RED-1 includes similar functionality as the Volume and Select 8 RCB devices but expands up those in several ways including an Ethernet based interface and high resolution OLED screen. The display screen and intuitive capacitive touch controls makes it a simple and easy to use interface. Old Trick, New Device! We can control the status of the LED lights on the VS8 with a flip flop, by toggling it ON or OFF. This is a good way of achieving perpetual indication for events like Source selections or Preset status. This functionality has been carried over to the RED-1. The White triangle indication can be forced on or off by controlling the status of the flip flop channels via presets (Fig. 1.1). Once a flip flop block is connected to the RED-1, the selection indication responds only to changes in the flip flop block status and completely overrides the standard RED-1 indication function. Because of Biamp s open architecture DSP and the fact that the RED-1 block with its configurable control dialog can be included in a preset, the device is capable of some nifty tricks. In our previous newsletter about the RED-1, we described the technical specs and step by step instructions on how to configure it. Biamp Technical Support Team We can achieve multiple indications using flip flops and these indications can be easily manipulated by using presets to set flip flop channels off/on. The flip flop trick for multiple perpetual indication can be used to display room combination status when using the room combiner block or matrix mixer with presets to do room combine/divide. Another useful application is to show zone activity. This can be useful in a paging or background music system PAGE 1

PAGE 2 Multi-Page Effect The OLED screen can be used to create the effect of having multiple selection pages, or a selection menu where each selection can transition to a different Page.

Each of those provides access to another page which has all the sources in that room listed, where you can select and control levels.

Open up the RED-1 control dialog and create a page for Room-1 by creating control labels for the different sources.

2 PAGE 2 Multi-Page Effect The OLED screen can be used to create the effect of having multiple selection pages, or a selection menu where each selection can transition to a different Page. Here s how the effect can be achieved: Example: Home screen shows selection for Room 1 and 2. Each of those provides access to another page which has all the sources in that room listed, where you can select and control levels.. STEP 1: Add a RED-1 block and multi channel Remote preset block in the program. Connect the remote preset block to the RED-1 block. Open up the RED-1 control dialog and create a page for Room-1 by creating control labels for the different sources. Map level controls for each of the sources by selecting appropriate Instance ID/Object code/control ID. Add a Back control to provide a way back to the Homescreen. Select a logic index for Back. Go to Create/Edit/Preset and create a new preset by including the RED-1 and remote preset block in the Selected DSP Blocks field. Name the preset Room-1 and save it. Fig. 2.1 Repeat the process for Room-2 by populating the RED- 1 with sources for Room-2 and create Room-2 preset including both the remote preset block and the RED-1 in the Selected DSP Blocks field. Save Room-2 preset. STEP 2: To create the Home screen, rename control labels 1 and 2 as Room 1 and Room 2. Make the rest of the control labels blank by adding space in place of the text. Assign logic indexs to control label 1 and 2, in this case 1 and 2. Fig. 2.2! Presets cannot change or affect the number of control CHANNELS in the RED-1 block. So its important to account for maximum number of control items in all presets. Hence the control channels were blanked and not deleted in the Fig. 2.3 Open control dialog for the Remote preset block and assign Room-1 and Room-2 presets for the first two nodes (which connect to the first 2 logic outs of the RED-1 block). Save these settings into a Home screen preset, making sure to include the RED-1 and remote preset block in the Selected DSP blocks field. Fig. 2.4 PAGE 2

label. Hit Save in the presets window to save this change into Room-1 preset. Repeat the same procedure for Room-2 preset. Fig. 2.

3 PAGE 3 STEP 3: In the Create/Edit/Recall presets window, Recall Room-1 preset. Open the remote preset block control dialog and assign the Homescreen preset so that it ties in with the logic index for the Back control label. Hit Save in the presets window to save this change into Room-1 preset. Repeat the same procedure for Room-2 preset. Fig. 2.5 The example below illustrates a simple 2 page interface. The concept can be expanded to create an extended menu with virtually unlimited number of page transitions. Homescreen Source Page for Room-1 PAGE 3

4 PAGE 4 Navigation, Explorer Style! We can also create a tree style effect using the same concept. Selecting a menu item provides an offset submenu which can be collapsed by selecting the same menu item again. Lets look at an example illustration to understand how this can be achieved. Example: Homescreen presents 3 selections - Projector, Mics and Music sources. Selecting Projector shows a submenu with ON/OFF controls, S- Video/VGA selections, Mic shows Mics 1 through 4 and Music sources shows DVD and ipod. STEP 1: Lets begin by setting up the different blocks needed to setup the Menu structure. As shown in the fig. in addition to the RED-1 and remote preset blocks, add a Flip Flop gate, a 3 channel logic state block, 3 two channel AND gates, 1 three channel OR gate and another single channel Remote preset block. In the following steps, we can see how all of these blocks participate in creating the nested Menu effect. STEP 2: Open the RED-1 control dialog and begin with creating the home screen in the control label field. For this example, add a control label each for Projector, Mics and Music Sources. In addition to these labels, also add extra blank control channels to accommodate the nested submenu. In this case, since the maximum number of submenu items is 4 (for Projector and Mic) add 4 more control channels and make them blank by adding space in the text field. Assign logic indexes to the Homescreen labels (Projector 1, Mics 2, Music Sources 3). Fig. 3.2 Fig. 3.1 Open Create/Edit/Recall preset and select New. Include RED-1, 3 channel Flip Flop and the 3 Channel Logic state block in the selected blocks field. Make sure all channels on the Flip Flop and Logic state blocks are Off. Name the preset Homescreen and hit Save. This preset will provide access to the homescreen and would also serve to reset all logic functions. PAGE 4 Fig. 3.3

4 In the create/edit preset window, include the RED-1 and the logic state block in the selected block field and save preset as Projector. Fig. 3.

Turn on Channel 02 in the logic state block, keeping Channel 01 and 03 off.

For Music sources, since we just have 2 items move 5 and 6 under control label 03.

STEP 4: Assign the three presets created in the previous step to the 3 channel remote preset block (Fig 3.6).

This ensures that the Home screen items retain their logic index association. Add the submenu item text to each control label by offsetting with a few blank spaces. Open the control dialog for the logic state block and turn on channel 01, make sure the other 2 channels remain off. Fig. 3.4 In the create/edit preset window, include the RED-1 and the logic state block in the selected block field and save preset as Projector. Fig. 3.5 For Mics, move controls labels 5 through 8 under control label 02. Add the submenu items with the same offset as in the previous preset. Turn on Channel 02 in the logic state block, keeping Channel 01 and 03 off. Save this into a new preset Mic, again including the RED-1 and logic state in the selected block field. For Music sources, since we just have 2 items move 5 and 6 under control label 03. Add the submenu item text with the offset and Set channel 3 on the logic state block on with the other channels off. Save this into a new preset Music sources. STEP 4: Assign the three presets created in the previous step to the 3 channel remote preset block (Fig 3.6). Assign the homescreen preset to the remote preset connected to the OR gate (Fig 3.7). Fig. 3.6 Loadup the file, and try the nested menu navigation! Fig. 3.7 Here is how the logic works: On selecting an item at the homescreen, Projector for example, the RED-1 block sends out a logic high at logic out 1 and triggers the Projector preset in the remote preset block. This preset displays the projector Submenu on the RED-1 screen, as we had programmed in Step2. It also turns ON channel 01 of the logic state. When Projector is again selected on the RED-1, there is again a logic HI at logic out 1. This time since the logic state channel 1 is already high, the first AND gate has HI on both its inputs momentarily which allows a logic HI on its output. This logic HI propagates through the OR gate and triggers Homescreen which serves to reset the RED-1 screen to the original state and also sets the logic state channels to Off. This file already uses a custom indication by suppressing the standard triangle indicator.

This forces the RED-1 to use no indication at all, and the same effect can be achieved with a text arrow or some other character typed into the text field of the control label.

STEP 1: Create the presets for selecting routing CD, Radio and Microphone for the source selection menu. Fig 4.

6 PAGE 6 Example: Music Sources submenu Selecting Music sources again brings back homescreen. The screenshots below show an application where the RED-1 screen provides a common set of sources to select from Rooms A, B and C. Selecting each Room option presents a submenu and selecting again collapses the submenu. Power Tip!! As was mentioned in the beginning, the selection indication can be forced on or off using Flip Flops. This file already uses a custom indication by suppressing the standard triangle indicator. This has been done by adding a flip flop between the RED-1 and Remote preset block and adding it to all the presets with all channels set to Off. This forces the RED-1 to use no indication at all, and the same effect can be achieved with a text arrow or some other character typed into the text field of the control label. Choose Your Lingua Franca! The RED-1 supports fonts for more than 40 different languages. Using presets we can quite easily provide a selection menu in the language of choice. Nifty! Example: Lounge with source selection for CD, Radio, Microphone, Teleconferencing and Video Conferencing. Display has 7 different languages to choose from and each selection presents the source selection menu in the chosen language. STEP 1: Create the presets for selecting routing CD, Radio and Microphone for the source selection menu. Fig 4.1 STEP 2: Now we need to create presets for the different languages. Open the control dialog for RED-1 and add 7 control channels (Fig 4.1: In this example the home screen would need 7 channels since there are 7 language choices). Create source selection menu for each language one by one and save them into a preset, eg. for Japanese copy and paste script for CD, Radio, Microphone and Homescreen from an external word processor or some online tool. To type natively in a specific script, the language pack for the script needs to be installed on the computer. To enable Keyboard layout for a script, follow steps mentioned at this link: Assign logic indexes 1,2 and 3 respectively to each of these control labels. PAGE 6

In the connected remote preset block, assign the language presets created in the previous step. Make sure to match it with the control label and logic index. For example, if control label 01 is English with logic index 01, assign English preset to the first node of the remote preset block. Save these settings into a new preset including the RED-1 and Remote preset block in the selected DSP blocks field. Name the preset Home Fig. 4.3 STEP 4: Finally, Edit the 7 language presets to associate the Home preset to the Back control label. Recall each preset from the preset window and add the Home preset to the remote preset block and select save. SUPPORTED LANGUAGES: The table on the next page lists the languages currently supported by the RED-1 firmware. More languages may be added in future updates.
