1 Steps to install Xubuntu on a Virtual Machine A virtual machine (VM) is an operating system OS, a self-contained operating environment that behaves as if it is a separate computer. The end user has the same experience on a virtual machine as they would have on dedicated hardware. We have different virtual machines but in this tutorial we are going to use VM Oracle VirtualBox which can be downloaded for free over the official website. 1. Download Xubuntu on the official website: Choose the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version according to you system at your PC A torrent download link will show up after clicking over the proper version. Click over the torrent file and press Ok to start the download. 1

2 Wait for the download to be completed. 2. Download VirtualBox an old version but compatible with most types of computers. On: Choose: VirtualBox (released Oct 15 th 2013) for Windows host x86/amd64 3. Double click over the downloaded file and start the installation. The installation process is very easy just Next->Next->Next->Yes->Install Wait for the installation to complete and click Finish. VirtualBox starts automatically. 4. On the VirtualBox first we have to create a new virtual machine. By pressing the New icon a window to create a new virtual machine. The following Screenshots show the steps to create a new virtual machine. 2

3 Put the name of your virtual machine and select the Operating System and the Version where belongs and press Next. Sometimes when the name is really similar by the name of the OS these fieleds are filled automatically. 3

4 Leave the RAM size as it is 512 Mb and press Next. 4

5 On the next window select the option Create a virtual hard drive and press Create On Hard Drive file type window select the option VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) and press Next 5

6 On Storage on physical hard drive window select the option Dynamically Allocated and press Next On File location and size change the hard drive size on 20Gb and press Create 6

7 After this step a new virtual machine appears on the list of the virtual machines by the left side. By clicking just once over the new virtual machine on the right side of the window setting appear. Go over System and click once. On the Extended Features select the option Enable I/O APIC and press Ok. On the Display settings select the option Enable the 3D Acceleration. 7

8 On the Storage settings click over the Empty CD on the right and select the Xubuntu Desktop-i386.iso file which you downloaded by Torrent at first. Select the option Live CD/DVD and press OK. 8

9 After loading the.iso file select your virtual machine and press the Start icon on the top and the installation of Xubuntu will automatically start. Internet connection is required. On the first window choose the language you want on you OS and select Install Xubuntu. The Installation type window leave it as it is and press Install Now. 9

10 Select your location and press Continue On the Keyboard Layout choose the Albania or English as you prefer and press Continue. 10

11 Fill all the information asked including your computer name, the user name and a password. The other options leave as they are and press Continue. 11

12 Wait until the installation is done. It takes a long time so just try to be patient. After the installation is finished you need to restart the machine. 12

13 After the restart the Operating System Xubuntu is ready to use you must just Log in with your password and the desktop will appear. Each time that you want to power on the Xubuntu just open the VirtualBox select the virtual machine you want to work on and press Start icon on the top. You can install applications, browse on the internet as this Operating System was in your physical PC. In order to see the window on full screen go View->Switch to full screen. To exit use the short cut Right Ctrl+F. 13

14 To power off the machine just click the X on the window and select the option Power Off the Machine and then Ok or Start->Press the circled button and choose the option Shut Down. 14
