1 In this section, you will find miscellaneous handouts that explain do various things. 140
2 SAVING Introduction Every time you do something, you should save it on the DESKTOP. Click Save and then click on the desktop on the left side and give the document a name that you will remember! Now you can get to your document during class time. However, everything you do on the computer, during class time, will DISAPPEAR when you shut down the computer. You must SAVE your work in another way. How do you do this? Flash Drive ($5-$20) (Free) You must choose a method for saving your work. 1. Flash Drives are really good because they hold a lot of documents, pictures, files, etc. However, they are not inexpensive. 2. Disks are very inexpensive. They can hold a lot of documents as long as there are not a lot of pictures. There is not a lot of space on a floppy disk. 3. is free, but you must log into the internet, create a message (to yourself) and ATTACH the document that you want to save. Then you can open your later and retrieve the message with the document. (see pg 2) : SAVE 141
3 How to use Flash Drive? 1. First, you should plug the flash drive into your computer. 2. Find the opening on your computer with this picture: 3. You will see the message that says Removable Disk (E: or F:) is detected. 4. The small window message asking What do you want Windows to do? will appear. 5. Close it by clicking cancel. 6. You will also have an icon next to the clock on the bottom that looks like a small gray box with a green arrow. 7. That means your flash drive is connected to your computer. 8. From Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, you can save your file by clicking File > Save > Choose Save in : Removable Disk (E: or F:) > Type a file name > Click Save. 9. You can save any file by changing SAVE IN to Removable Disk. 10. To remove the flash disk, double click the gray box with a green arrow icon on the bottom of the screen. 10. Choose USB Mass Storage Device, and click Stop. 11. Click USB Flash Memory USB device. This name might be different. Click OK. You can now plug out your flash drive. : SAVE TO A FLASH DRIVE 142
4 Steps 1. Open Internet Explorer 2. Type in the URL: Checking Google mail 3. Click on Gmail on the top of the screen. 4. Put in your username and password (you may want to write them on this handout so that you don t forget them), and click sign in : OPEN 143
5 To attach something to your OR send to Charmaine 1. Open Internet Explorer 2. Open your ( Click on the mail button. 3. Log in and put in your password. 4. Create a new message by clicking on Compose Mail 5. Type in your OWN address in the to box. To send to Charmaine, type the address: charmainephipps@gmail.com 6. Click on Attach a file 7. Click on browse to find the document (did you save it on the desktop?) 8. Click on the desktop picture on the left and then find your file. Click on it and then Click on OPEN 9. You may attach more than 5 files by using browse again if you want to. 10. When you have all the files listed, wait until C:\... is changed to the file name and a check box. 11. Include a message in the subject line or main message area to remind you of what you are sending to yourself (if you wish) 12. SEND When you get home (or to class next Friday) you can get your mail and your document will be attached. : ATTACH SOMETHING TO 144
6 To include a BORDER in your MSWord document: Click on Format (on toolbar) Click on Borders and Shading Select the tab Page Border Next to Art, choose the down arrow (choose a border!) Click on OK after you ve chosen the one you like! : INSERT A BORDER IN MSWORD 145
7 Activity: Inserting Clip Art from Online Sources Steps 1. Click Insert > Picture > Clip Art 2. You will see small pop up on the left of the screen. 3. Click Clip art on Office Online on the bottom. 4. Internet Explorer screen will appear. 5. Scroll down then you will see Browse Clip Art and Media Categories. Click any category you want to put in the word. 6. Among pictures, choose one picture you want to put in the word. 7. Then click the note button on the bottom of the picture. : USE CLIP ART ONLINE TO FIND MORE CLIP ART 146
8 8. The double note button is for copying the picture. Now go back to your Microsoft word file. You do not need to copy the picture as long as you have clicked the note button. 9. Go to Edit > Paste, or click the right mouse button to paste the picture. 10. The picture will appear automatically. Tip: If you double click ON the picture > go to layout > change wrapping style to square or tight, then you will be able to move the picture wherever you want. : USE CLIP ART ONLINE TO FIND MORE CLIP ART 147
9 Using Paint Steps 1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories, and Paint. Then you will see the screen as below. Maximize it if it is small. *The Tools Microsoft Paint has an assortment of painting Tools that you can use for drawing shapes and applying color to areas of your image in various ways. You switch between tools by clicking on the appropriate Icon on the Toolbar, which is located on the left side of the Paint window. The Toolbar looks like the picture on the right. The bottom portion of the Toolbar changes when you select a tool to reveal additional options or settings for that tool. : USE PAINT to make a PAINTING!! 148
10 Most of the Tools are used to apply color in some way to a portion of the image. In order to use these tools, you'll first want to make sure that you have selected the correct color in the Color Palette. The top row of Icons-Selection Tools the Eraser tool Fill tool Eye Dropper tool Magnifying Glass tool Pencil tool You can select the drawing by drag and drop Just click on it to select it, then click on the part of the image that you want to erase. "Erasing" changes the erased part of the image back to the background color of the image file. The Icon for the Fill Tool resembles a pouring jar of paint. Just like if you were pouring a liquid in real life, the Fill Tool s "paint" will fill an area s shape with color. The eyedropper can be used to "pick up" colors that you ve already used in an image. The Magnifying Glass, or Zoom tool, can be used to get a closer, more detailed view of an image. This is very useful if you re working in close with the fine details of a part of an image. The Pencil tool is your basic drawing tool. You can draw in different colors. Paint Brush tool Airbrush tool The Paint Brush tool is similar to the pencil, but has more features. It can be used in different colors, but the shape and size of the Paint Brush can also be changed. You can use square, round, and slanted shaped brushes, of various sizes. Instead of applying color to the image evenly, it applies it gradually. The "spray" is a semi-random distribution of pixels. Gradually, as the airbrush is left hovering over the same area while it is painting, it will fill up with color. : USE PAINT to make a PAINTING!! 149
11 <- The waves are drawn by airbrush tool. Text tool Line tool Curve tool Rectangle Drawing tool The Text tool is used to position and enter text into your image. The text may be of any color or font that you have active on your computer. Click on the image where you want one of the line s endpoints to be, then drag over to where you want the other endpoint to be. Then release the button. Easy! But the lines can only be straight. Try clicking and dragging to make one kind of line, or clicking and releasing two endpoints. Click a third point to determine the curve. Try dragging an already drawn, but still active, multi-point line to distort its curve. The Rectangle tool draws three types of rectangles: outline, filled with outline, and filled without outline. To draw a rectangle, click on the tool, then click a point on the image where you want one corner to be, then drag diagonally and release the mouse where you want the opposite corner to be. : USE PAINT to make a PAINTING!! 150
12 Polygons are great for all creating all kinds of irregular shapes. Polygon Drawing tool Oval Drawing Tool Rounded Rectangle Drawing Tool Click on the image wherever you want your first vertice to be. A vertice is like a corner. Draw the edges of the shape like you would use the Straight Line tool, then simply connect the last edge to the first vertice and the shape will finish. You have to be pretty precise, though. If you just miss by a few pixels, the shape will think that you want to continue adding sides to the polygon. The Oval Tool works much like the Rectangle tool. The only difference is that since there are no corners, you will need to guess where the corners would be in order to place your oval where you want it to go. Tip: To create perfect circles, hold down the shift key as you draw the shape. The Rounded Rectangle tool is like a cross between the Rectangle Tool and the Oval Tool. You can create rounded rectangles with empty outlines, filled outlines, or filled with no outline. Tip: To create rounded squares, hold down the shift key as you draw the shape. : USE PAINT to make a PAINTING!! 151
13 MORE Using Paint Steps 1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories, and Paint. You will see the screen below. Maximize it if it is small. 2. We are going to draw the picture below: : USE PAINT to make a PAINTING!! 152
14 Click the Fill with color icon on the second row of the tool box. 4. Choose any color from the bottom of the screen. 5. Click anywhere in the white square. Then, you will see the background color has been changed. 6. Click Brush tool to draw a heart. 7. Choose the thickness by clicking small circles or squares right below the tool box. 8. Draw a heart in the middle of the colored box. 9. Under the heart, draw lines with different thickness by using brush tool. 10. You can undo (edit > undo OR Ctrl + Z) to erase what you have done. : USE PAINT to make a PAINTING!! 153
