1 14 March 2013 How to update FOCUS 30 Firmware This support note will guide you through updating the firmware on a FOCUS 30 instrument. Note : If your FOCUS 30 has previously received a firmware upgrade use this document. If it has never before received a firmware update you will need to contact your Service Provider to have the USB Interface controls set to perform its first firmware update. The current firmware version installed can be located on the FOCUS 30 when you first power on the instrument. It can be located on FACE 2 under the Spectra Precision Logo, or by using FACE 2 interface. From the Instrument Status screen select the enter arrow once this will take you to the Main Menu. 2 Verify the Firmware Version is up to date. The most recent version can be found on Spectra Precision web site. Note: Any installed files, for example the Survey Pro application program, or data files, for example job/project files, will remain unaffected and in the same locations as they were before the FOCUS 30 firmware update. Step 1: Locate and Unzip files You will need a Zip file containing the complete installation of new firmware on a FOCUS 30. FocusFWPackage_R1_4_0.zip This Zip files can be found on Spectra Precision web site, or the Spectra Precision Partners web site. Open the Zip file and save the files to a location on your PC. Example Save to C:\Temp The Zip file unpacks a new folder and a firmware update file to the location you chose. For example: The TrmbTS.sys folder contains both 32 bit and 64 bit drivers to support a variety of Windows Operating systems. The firmware update file, for example FocusFWPackage_R1_4_0.exe, contains the installer program and all the necessary files to update the FOCUS 30. Step 2: Install FOCUS 30 to PC communication drivers (Only for PC s that have never previously connected to a FOCUS 30) Note: Users can ignore this step and move to Step 3 if software drivers have already been installed during a previous installation of firmware to a FOCUS 30 using the same PC. Software drivers allow communication between a PC and a FOCUS 30. They must be present in your PC so the computer can connect to it. First turn on the instrument and then connect it to your computer via USB. If a Found New Hardware Wizard dialog does NOT appear the driver is already installed. To complete the installation move on to the Step 3 of this document. If the Found New Hardware Wizard does appear the driver needs to be installed. The driver install process looks slightly different depending on your operating system (OS) installed on your PC. Page 2

3 Microsoft Windows XP: A dialog that looks similar to this will pop up when you connect your FOCUS 30: Select Yes, this time only and select next. You will now see this: Select the second (Advanced) option Install from a list or specific location. Page 3

4 You will now see this: Select the Search for the best driver in these locations Browse to where you unzipped the TrmbTS.sys folder. Select, Next. Windows will now install the driver, after a minute or so you will see the successfully installed dialog: Select Finish. Now the driver is installed Page 4

5 Microsoft Windows Vista / Microsoft Windows 7: When you first connect your instrument Vista or Windows 7 it will try and install drivers for it and you will see a small balloon popup from the task bar like this: It will then pop up the Found New Hardware Wizard: Select the first option Locate and install driver software (recommended). 6 You will then see this request: Select Yes, search online this time only. You will see this: Page 6

7 It will NOT find the driver and show you this next dialog: Select Browse my computer for driver software (advanced). You will now see this: Browse to where you unzipped the TrmbTS.sys folder and select, Next. Page 7

8 On some installations will see the following message regarding digital signatures: If this message appears chose Install this driver software anyway. You will then see this: Now the software communication drivers are installed, you are ready to update the FOCUS 30 firmware. Page 8

9 Step 3: Prepare the FOCUS 30 for update Insert a fully charged battery into the FOCUS 30. On FACE 2 change from the Instrument Status screen to the Main Menu by select one time the enter arrow this will take you to the Main Menu. Note: If your FOCUS 30 has never received a firmware update previously, it will have a USB Interface set to the factory default mode of Always Off. The USB Interface menu and settings are located only in the Service Menu. To allow the instrument to accept new firmware access it is necessary to change this setting via the Service Menu using the USB Interface and change from Always Off to Always On. Note: If the Service Menu is not displayed under the Main Menu on FACE 2 then please contact your FOCUS 30 Service provider to complete the installation. Page 9

10 After checking this USB Interface setting is set Always On then Exit the Service Menu. Now locate and connect your FOCUS 30 instrument USB download cable (part SPN). Connecting your USB cable to the instrument should power up your FOCUS 30 if not Power on the FOCUS 30. You may notice, soon after connection, in your Windows task bar either Active Sync, or Windows Mobile Device Center had opened and should be in the Connected status. You are now successfully prepared to install the FOCUS 30 firmware update. Page 10

11 Step 4: Run the firmware and update FOCUS 30 If you have successfully Unzipped your FOCUS 30 firmware (see Step 1) use Windows Explorer and Browse to the location your extracted the firmware package to for example C:\Temp\FocusFWPackage_R1_4_0.exe Select and Open the.exe file to install the firmware. You may see this message: Select, Run. You will then see this: Check the connection and Select OK. Page 11

12 If you see this message Do not close the window. The Installer program should be available on your Windows task bar, located as an icon on the taskbar, to prompt you though the installation. A new screen appears verifying the instruments current firmware and power status. Select the Update button. If the Update button is not selectable it is likely our USB Interface settings are not set to Always On see Step 3 for details how to change this setting. Once the Update button is selected your FOCUS 30, on FACE 2, should now read Firmware Update Update in Progress Please wait! Page 12

13 On your PC you will see this following screen and your instrument may make several sounds. The installation will update each firmware module of the instrument in turn, which can take several minutes. Page 13

14 Towards the end the instrument will restart automatically. When complete the dialog will show installation successful. Select, Close. Check your firmware has been installed successfully on your instrument. The newly installed firmware version can be located on the FOCUS 30 when you power on the instrument. It can be located on FACE 2 under the Spectra Precision Logo, or by using FACE 2 interface under Instrument Details in the Main Menu. Troubleshooting If any errors occur while running the update, make a copy of the contents of the folder FocusUpdateLog which will be created in the root of the directory from where FocusFWPackage_R1_X_0.exe, was run. Example C:\Temp\FocusUpdateLog\FOCUS_ _2010_07_29_15_01_45.log This file contains important information, and will be valuable for the support team to help troubleshoot any problems. Page 14
