Intrductin: Abut Firmware Files, Naming, Versins, and Frmats The CTOG 250 Cmtech Traffic Optimizatin Gateway and its CDM 800 Gateway Ruter are factry shipped with the latest versin f perating firmware. Yu can acquire firmware updates frm Cmtech EF Data via dwnlad frm the Internet t a user supplied PC, via e mail, r n CD. These updates are transferable t an in service CTOG 250 system withut having t remve the cvers f either prduct chassis. Cmtech EF Data s Web site catalgues its firmware update files by prduct type (e.g., mdems, accessries, etc.) and specific mdel/ptinal cnfiguratin. This firmware update is available frm Cmtech EF Data s Web site ( per the fllwing table: Web Hyperlink.EXE /.ZIP File Cntains Image File F x_V#### FW x.* FW x_ ctg250.bin Bulk firmware fr CTOG-250 / CDM-800 Gateway Ruter peratin Nte that the x in these hyperlinks and/r file names dente the firmware revisin letter, and V### represents the firmware versin (e.g., V151X = Versin X). When applicable, ne versin prir t the current release is als available fr dwnlad. Cmtech EF Data prvides firmware dwnlad files in tw archive frmats: *.exe (self extracting) and *.zip (cmpressed). Sme firewalls will nt allw the dwnlading f *.exe files; in this case, dwnlad the *.zip file instead. Nte: Fr additinal help with "zipped" file types, refer t the help files prvided with the PKZIP fr Windws, WinZip, r ZipCentral file archiving prgrams. 2 II. Preparing fr the Firmware Update 1. First, identify the CTOG 250 assigned Management IP Address, and the firmware number/ revisin letter/versin number. User supplied items needed: A Micrsft Windws based PC, equipped with available serial and Ethernet prts; a cmpatible Web brwser (e.g., Internet Explrer); and a terminal emulatr prgram (e.g., Tera Term r HyperTerminal). A 9 pin serial cable t cnnect the PC t the CTOG 250. A. Use the 9 pin serial cable t cnnect the CTOG 250 SERIAL prt t a serial prt n the user PC: B. On the PC: Open the terminal emulatr prgram. Refer t yur terminal emulatr prgram HELP feature r user guide fr perating and cnfiguratin instructins. Cnfigure the utility prgram serial prt cmmunicatin and terminal display peratin: bps (Baud Rate) 8 Data Bits 1 Stp Bit Parity = NO Prt Flw Cntrl = NONE Display New line Rx/Tx: CR Lcal Ech = ON C. On the PC: Review and recrd the infrmatin displayed n the CTOG 250 Serial Interface: Management IP Address (e.g., default is /24) Firmware Number and Revisin Letter (e.g., FW G) Firmware Release Versin (e.g., X) See Chapter 8. SERIAL BASED REMOTE PRODUCT MANAGEMENT fr infrmatin and instructins n using the CTOG 250 Serial Interface. E. Alternately, use the CTOG 250 Web Server Interface t btain the firmware infrmatin. Use an Ethernet hub, switch, r direct cable cnnectin t cnnect the CTOG 250 MGMT 1 prt t the PC: On the PC: Use a Web brwser (e.g., Internet Explrer) t lg in t the CTOG 250 Web Server Interface and access the Admin Firmware page. Next, create a temprary flder (subdirectry) n the user PC fr the firmware archive dwnlad. Drive letter c: is used in these examples. Any valid, writable drive letter can be used. Typical fr all tasks: Type the cmmand withut qutes, and then press Enter t execute. There are several ways the user may use create a temprary flder n a Windws based PC: A. Use the Windws Desktp t create and rename the temprary flder. Right click anywhere n the desktp t pen the ppup submenu, and then select New > Flder t create the temprary flder. The new flder will be created n the desktp. Right click n the new flder and then select Rename frm the ppup submenu. Rename this flder t "temp" r sme ther cnvenient, unused name. B. Use Windws Explrer t create and rename the temprary flder. Select File > New > Flder t create the temprary flder. The new flder will be created in the active flder. Right click the New Flder flder name, and then rename this flder t "temp" r sme ther cnvenient, unused name. 5 C. Use the Run and Brwse windws t create and rename the temprary flder. Select [Start] n the Windws taskbar and then click the Run... icn. The Run windw will pen. Click [Brwse] in the Run windw. The Brwse windw will pen. Click the Create New Flder icn in the Brwse windw. The new flder will be created. Right click the New Flder flder name and then rename this flder t temp r sme ther cnvenient, unused name. D. Use Windws Cmmand line t create the temprary flder. First, click [Start] n the Windws taskbar, and then click the Run... icn (r, depending n Windws OS versins prir t Windws 95, click the MS DOS Prmpt icn frm the Main Menu). Next, pen a Cmmand line windw Fr Windws 95 r Windws 98 Type cmmand. Fr any Windws OS versins later than Windws 98 Type cmd r cmmand. Alternately, frm [Start], select All Prgrams > Accessries > Cmmand Prmpt. Finally, frm the Cmmand line c:\> prmpt, type mkdir temp r md temp (mkdir and md stand fr make directry), and then click [OK]. 6 There shuld nw be a "temp" flder created and available fr placement f the firmware file dwnlad. III. Dwnlading and Extracting the Firmware Update 1. First, dwnlad the firmware update archive file frm the Cmtech EF Data Web site: A. G nline t B. On the Main page under Supprt Infrmatin r the Supprt tab, select the Sftware Dwnlads hyperlink. C. On the Sftware Dwnlads page click Dwnlad Flash and Sftware Update Files. D. On the Flash Updates Index page select the (Select a Prduct Line) Advanced VSAT Series hyperlink. E. On the Advanced VSAT Slutins prduct page select the CTOG 250 prduct hyperlink. F. Select the apprpriate firmware archive EXE r ZIP file dwnlad hyperlink. I. Once the EXE r ZIP hyperlink is selected the File Dwnlad windw pens and prmpts selectin f [Open] r [Save]: Click [Open] t turn ver file extractin t the user supplied utility prgram. Be sure t extract the firmware files t the temp flder created earlier. Click [Save] t pen the Save As windw. Be sure t select and [Save] the archive *.exe r *.zip file t the temp flder created earlier. Otherwise, click [Cancel] t quit and exit the file dwnlad prcess. 2. Next, extract the firmware files frm the archive file. 7 Duble click n the archive file name, and then fllw the prmpts prvided by the user supplied utility prgram. Extract, at a minimum, tw files: FW x_ctg250.bin the Firmware Bulk image file (where x dentes the revisin letter), and CTOG 250ReleaseNtes_v# # #.pdf the Firmware Release Ntes PDF file (where # # # dentes the firmware versin number). 3. Cnfirm availability f the firmware files in the temprary flder. There are several ways the user may view the cntents f the temprary flder n a Windws based PC: A. Frm the Windws Desktp: Duble left click the temp flder saved t the Windws Desktp. Use Windws Explrer t lcate, and then duble left click the temp flder. Use the Brwse windw ([Start] >...Run > [Brwse]) t lcate, and then dubleclick the c:\temp flder. B. Using Cmmand line: Type cd c:\temp at the Cmmand line prmpt t change t the temprary directry created earlier using Cmmand line. 1. Type dir t list the files extracted t the temprary directry frm the dwnladed archive file. The firmware files have been successfully dwnladed and are nw available fr transfer t the CTOG 250. Perfrming the Ethernet FTP Uplad Prcedure T prceed with the firmware update prcedure, assumptins are made that: The CTOG 250 is cnnected t a user supplied, Windws based PC, and: The PC serial prt is cnnected t the CTOG 250 CONSOLE prt. The PC Ethernet prt is cnnected t the CTOG 250 MGMT 1 Ethernet prt with a user supplied hub, switch, r direct Ethernet cable cnnectin. The PC is running a terminal emulatin prgram (fr peratin f the CTOG 250 Serial Cmmand Line Interface) and a cmpatible Web brwser (fr peratin f the CTOG 250 Web Server Interface). The CTOG 250 Management IP Address has been nted using the CTOG 250 Serial Interface, and the firmware has been identified using either the serial interface r the CTOG 250 Web Server Interface Admin Firmware page. The latest firmware files have been dwnladed r therwise received frm Cmtech EF Data and are available n the user PC in an accessible temprary flder. 1. Use Cmmand line t send a PING cmmand t cnfirm prper cnnectin and cmmunicatin between the user PC and the CTOG 250: If the Management IP Address f the unit is still nt knwn, type inf at the serial interface CTOG 250> cmmand prmpt and recrd the displayed infrmatin. Alternately, use Serial Remte Cntrl r the Web Server Interface: Serial Remte Cntrl Type the <0/IPA? remte query (withut qutes) at the serial interface CTOG 250> cmmand prmpt. The unit returns the cnfigured Management IP Address: >0000/IPA= /24 (default) Web Server Interface View the IP Address/CIDR Mask entry n the Cnfiguratin Interface Mgt page: Once the Management IP address is knwn use Cmmand line t PING: Type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx at the Cmmand line prmpt (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the unit Management IP Address). 9 2. Use Cmmand line t transfer (FTP) the files frm the user PC t the CTOG 250: Type "ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dentes the Management IP address f the unit being updated. Enter the username and passwrd assigned t the unit. The default username and passwrd is cmtech. Type bin t set the binary transfer mde. Type "put FW x_ctg250.bin" (where x dentes the revisin letter) at the Cmmand line prmpt, withut qutes, t begin the file transfer. The prcess sequences thrugh several blcks this may take several minutes fr the transfer t ccur. Once the update file is received, the image is written t Flash memry and the unit transmits the message UPLOAD COMPLETE. In the event yu receive the Cnnectin clsed by remte hst. message, wait anther minute befre cntinuing. The CDM 800 update smetimes takes lnger than the FTP client allws. Type "bye" t terminate the FTP sessin, and then clse the Cmmand line windw. 3. Use the serial interface r the Web Server Interface Admin Firmware page t verify that the PC t Unit FTP file transfer was successful. 4. Use the CTOG 250 Web Server Interface t select the firmware and rebt the unit: A. Select the desired Bt Slt (Image): G t the Web Server Interface Admin Firmware page. Use the Bt Frm: drp dwn menu t select Latest, Slt 1, r Slt 2 (in the Firmware Cnfiguratin sectin). By default, the unit will bt frm the Slt that stres the firmware versin having the latest date (Bt Frm: Latest). Bt Frm: may als be set t frce the unit t bt up using either firmware image laded in Slt 1 r Slt 2. Click [Submit] t save the setting. B. 10 Click [Rebt] in the System Rebt sectin f the Admin Firmware page r the Utility Rebt page and [OK] when prmpted, and then wait while the CTOG 250 rebts. The CTOG 250 and its CDM 800 are nw perating with the latest firmware. The firmware update prcess is nw cmplete.
