30 DAB Explained What is DAB Radio? DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting, this is a way of broadcasting radio digitally via a network of transmitters. It provides listeners with more choice, reduced interference with no hiss or crackle and scrolling text information. More Choice Because of the way DAB technology works, broadcasters can transmit many more stations than ever before. Listeners in most major towns and cities in the UK can receive between 30 and 50 radio stations with a digital radio, in many cases that s more than double what s available on analogue. Because digital radio uses the spectrum more efficiently than analogue, it is possible to broadcast more channels using the same frequency, making room for broadcasters to expand their station portfolios. Less Noise DAB transmission eliminates the hiss, crackle and fade so familiar on analogue radio. With a digital signal you either receive it or you don t. Ease of Use A DAB digital radio will tune to a station at the touch of a single button. No more fine tuning a station to get the best reception. A DAB set allows the listener to scroll through a list of available stations in alphabetical order - then tune in by pressing the select button. What does this logo mean? Roberts has introduced a range of Bluetooth models called Blutune, these enable you to stream your personal music collection via Bluetooth from any of your Bluetooth enabled devices. Bluetooth technology is a short-range communications technology that is simple and secure, it is a way of exchanging data wirelessly over short distances. Using a radio frequency to transmit data, it creates a short range connection. It is intended to replace the cables connecting devices, while maintaining high levels of security. 29

31 Connected Radio Explained What is Connected Radio? ROBERTS internet radios enable you to connect to over 15,000 internet radio stations from all over the world and also offer a Listen Again feature that allows you to listen to previously broadcast programmes at your leisure. Browsing stations is really simple thanks to on-screen radio station listings that are automatically updated and conveniently sorted into country or genre. All you need to get started is a broadband internet connection with either a wireless router or wired Ethernet connection. Last.fm is an Internet-based on-line music service with millions of tracks available which you can access using your internet radio. It plays tracks based on your choice of artists or styles and your listening history. Last.fm also learns about your musical tastes from the music that you may play from your computer. Last.fm can introduce you to a new range of artists and music which you will probably enjoy but you may never have heard before. Media Streaming The Media Streaming function allows you to use your internet radio to play music files which are stored on a computer or other storage device on your network. You can plan your listening in advance by setting up playlists of your favorite tracks and playing them via your Internet radio at your leisure. Most stored music will typically be MP3 or WMA files, but most of our radios will also play other formats such as AAC (itunes) or FLAC. Some of our radios also allow you to play files from a USB memory device which is plugged into the radio. ConnectR is a free application that once downloaded, acts as a remote control for your Wi-Fi radio. Using your ipod touch or iphone you can connect to either one or several Roberts internet radios and control them all wherever they are in the house via your wireless internet connection.
