1 NX-588E USB Flash Programmer Instructions v1.1 Installing the NX-588E on a computer This process should take 5-10 min. 6. The following screen will appear: It is essential you carry out this step from beginning to end without interruption. Make sure you have the driver file available. 1. Restart your computer so everything is fresh. Close any programs that are running especially synchronisation programs (e.g. Microsoft ActiveSync, Nokia PC Suite, Blackberry Manager), and disable any wireless devices as they may be occupying COM ports. 7. The driver will now install: 2. Connect the NX-588E to the USB port on your laptop. 3. Wait for this screen to appear (~2 min): 8. This screen will appear when complete: 4. Select the second option (Advanced) then Next. 5. Deselect the first tick box. Select the second box Include this location in the search. Click Browse and find the folder where the driver file NX588E.inf is located. Click Next. 9. Now we need to install the software, double click the NXProg Install.EXE file and click Next to all menus 10. When it is complete, click OK to restart the laptop.

2 Transferring Firmware This process should take 5-10 min. 1. Connect the NX-588E to your laptop with a USB lead. The USB Status LED on the NX-588E should light up. 5. After the file is transferred to the NX-588E, it will automatically check that it has transferred correctly: 2. Double click the NXProg icon on the Desktop: 6. This should take ~1min, when the message shows Transfer Done, you are now ready to perform the Flash update: 3. Click Open File and select the correct firmware FLX file. 4. Click Transfer File to upload the firmware to the NX-588E:

3 Update Firmware This process should take 5-10 min. There are two ways to transfer the firmware from the NX-588E to the Reliance panel: Using only the NX-588E (no computer) Using NXProg software and a computer A firmware update will not default programming data, but as a precaution, make sure you READ all programming data from the Reliance panel before performing the firmware update. 1. Attach NX-588E alligator clips to the Reliance. If you have a keypad installed in partition 8, keypad 8, it must be removed during this operation. 2. On a Partition 1 keypad, enter 8 3. Enter the 4- or 6-digit program code (default is 9713) 4. When prompted for the device number, enter # 5. When prompted for the location, enter 0 # 6. To READ data (copy panel configuration in to the NX-588E): a. Enter 1 b. Enter a slot number (1, 2, 3 or 4) c. Enter # d. Not Used LED will flash during read e. A triple beep will sound on error, enter 0 # and refer to pg 2 of full manual for error details. f. Ding-Dong will sound when done g. Enter 0 # and a 20 should be displayed to indicate success h. Enter #, Exit, Exit Update Firmware without a computer This process should take only ~2 min. 1. Unplug plug pack, disconnect battery, and disconnect connections to auxiliary relay outputs (if in use) from the Reliance. 2. Connect the programming lead to the Reliance (white 5 pin connector). 3. Connect the Red, Black and Green alligator clips to the POS, COM, DATA terminals on the Reliance. 4. Connect plug pack and turn on. 5. The Programming Error LED on the NX-588E will flash slowly 1 per second. This indicates the firmware is being transferred. Service flashes on LCD codepads. On a Reliance 8 it takes ~15 sec. If the LED flashes fast 3 per second, then there is a problem (e.g. trying to flash a Reliance 128 with Reliance 8 firmware). Try transferring the correct firmware file again to the NX-588E. 6. When the update is complete the Programming Error LED will stay lit, and the panel may beep. 7. Disconnect the NX-588E cables from the Reliance. 8. Cycle power on/off. 9. Reconnect the backup battery. To WRITE data (copy panel configuration from the NX-588E in to a panel): a. Enter 2 b. Enter a slot number (1, 2, 3 or 4) c. Enter # d. Not Used LED will flash during write e. A triple beep will sound on error, enter 0 # and refer to pg 2 of full manual for error details. f. Ding-Dong will sound when done

4 Update Firmware with a computer 1. When the message shows Transfer Done, click Upgrade Firmware to get the NX-588E to flash the NX board with the new firmware: 3. During the flashing procedure the status bar will continuously move: 2. If you get Fail! Flash (09) check that cables are firmly connected (white USB lead and grey 5-pin lead): 4. Done! will display when it is complete and the checksum should match the file: Flash (01) and Flash (02) indicate you may have the wrong file stored in the NX-588E for the board you are trying to reflash. 5 Troubleshooting Driver Installation f. Open Ports The current driver is only approved for Windows 2000 and XP The NX-588E is a NX-586 with a built in USB to Serial converter and so requires a COM port to be allocated to it by Windows. If DL900 does not recognise the NX-588E and you get errors when attempting to perform a direct connect, then another device on the computer may be using the same COM port. This could be another USB device, wireless device or synchronisation software for a mobile phone or PDA. g. Double click the Communications Port for the NX-588E, the screen that appears will let you know if it is the NX-588E in the Location field Some things to try: 1. Close DL900 and any other programs 2. Disconnect any unnecessary devices 3. Disable any synchronization software 4. Turn off any wireless devices 5. Change the COM port of the NX-588E: a. Click the Start menu in Windows b. Click Settings then Control Panel c. Open System h. Click the Port Settings tab d. Click the Hardware tab i. Click Advanced e. Click Device Manager

6 j. Now you can change the COM Port number on the bottom of the screen to another number k.
