1 System 500 Firmware Upgrade Process The following Guide is split into three sections. One section describes how to back-up user files and settings from an instrument, format the entire RAM of the instrument and then load back on the user settings. The second section runs through the process of loading the instrument with the latest release of Firmware and application programs. The third section takes you through the process of updating your time and date to allow the instrument to track satellites. Please read the ENTIRE guide before attempting the Firmware Upgrade Process. Page 8, the 3 steps required to manually set the time and date on your instrument, once you have upgraded to Firmware version It is not required to reformat the System Ram before loading on new Firmware but it is a process that is often advisable as it will clear out any unneeded files from the system and can assist with the Firmware upload process If only a Firmware load/reload is to be done please go straight to Section 2 (page 7). *Please Note Only use a PCMCIA card to upload the firmware. DO NOT use a CF Card with an Adaptor as this may not work and cause firmware to fail that will result in the instrument having to be sent to service. Leica UK Technical Support Group 1

00 of the firmware loaded you will need to upgrade to version 5.06 first and then to version 5.10. This will mean that you will need to follow Sections 1-2 to upgrade to Version 5.

2 Checking your Firmware Version. If you have Firmware Version 5.06 of the firmware loaded you will only need to load the 5.10 firmware to your instrument and can follow this guide, Sections 1-3, once to complete the upload process. If you have Firmware Version 4.00 to 5.00 of the firmware loaded you will need to upgrade to version 5.06 first and then to version This will mean that you will need to follow Sections 1-2 to upgrade to Version 5.06 and then Sections 1-3 to upgrade to version IF you have a Firmware Version below 4.00 please contact us for advice on upgrading your instrument. Checking your Firmware Version 1 To check your firmware version please press the Status Button on your instrument. This will take you to the Status Screen. The Reload of the user files and settings. The Back-Up of user files and settings onto the Card 1 The first step is to back up the configuration settings on the instrument. From the Main Menu Select 7 Transfer This will take you to the Transfer 2 From the Transfer Objects Menu ; First select 02 Config Set. This will take you to Transfer Config Set Screen. 3 From the Transfer Config Set Screen; Set From: Sensor and To: PC-Card. Then press F3 ALL to transfer all codelists in one go.

5 6 From the Format Memory Device Screen Select F5 SYSTM. Accept any on screen prompts and this will reset the System RAM. Note: It is important to select F5 and never F1, as F1 will reformat the PC- Card wiping off any files that it contains, i.e. Jobs and backed-up user files. The Reload of user files and settings 7 Now the backed-up settings shall be loaded back onto the instrument. 6 9 From the Transfer Objects Menu ; First select 02 Config Set. This will take you to Transfer Config Sets Screen. 10 From the Transfer Codelists Screen; Set From: PC-Card and To: Sensor. Then press F3 ALL to transfer all codelists in one go. Accept any on screen prompts and the file will transfer, the instrument will return to the Main Repeat steps 8-11 to transfer the following items Coordinate Systems, Codelists, Modem/GSM Stations & Format Files. Section 2: To Load the Instrument Firmware and Applications IMPORTANT NOTE: It is important to do this process with a full battery as it takes approximately 15 minutes and the instrument MUST NOT

IMPORTANT NOTE: PLEASE ONLY USE A PCMCIA CARD WHEN UPLOADING THE FIRMWARE. 1 The System Firmware for your Instrument is attached to the please copy these to the GPS\PROG folder of the PC-Card. 2 The New version of the Firmware can now be uploaded; From the Main Menu ; Select 7 Transfer This will take you to the Transfer From the Transfer Menu Select 10 Firmware This will take you to the Transfer Firmware Screen. 3 From the Transfer Firmware Screen Set From: CF Card and To: Instrument, check that the Firmware Version is showing the correct version that is to be installed. Then press F1 Cont. Accept any on screen prompts and the Firmware will install The instrument will reboot and the firmware will begin to install. Do not turn off the instrument during this process. 8 Section 3: Setting Time and Date. 1 As the new firmware has been uploaded it is necessary to set the time and date before your instrument will track satellites. From the Main Menu Select the large CONFIG button This will take you to the Configure 2 From the Configure Menu Select 3 General This will take you to the General Settings Screen. Select Time & Initial Position This will take you to the Configure\Time and Initial Pos screen. 3 In this screen set your time and date as current and press F1 Cont. This will then return you to the Main Menu. It is now necessary to reboot your instrument which will then allow an update of the satellite almanac and begin tracking satellites.
