3 1 Introduction & Purpose This is the user manual for the CEL Device-Programmer software. The Device-Programmer is used for upgrading the firmware in the external serial ROM of the evaluation board, and the FLASH code area of the ZIC2410 ZigBee Device. Device-Programmer supports two firmware download modes, as follows: Direct-DownLoad mode Download the firmware to the ZIC2410 in ISP mode connected directly to the PC through a Serial interface. OTA-Programmer mode Download the firmware using wireless communication with the evaluation board through the Over-the-Air (OTA) software provided by CEL. The Device-Programmer can communicate with the ZIC2410 using the UART1 interface. On the ZIC2410-EVB1 evaluation board, the UART1 interface can be configured to connect to either a USB port or an Ethernet (TCP/IP) socket. On the ZICM2410-EVB2 evaluation board the UART1 interface is connected to the USB port. Finally, the Device-Programmer can Read/Write hardware information directly to a board-mounted device either through a USB cable or connected wirelessly. 1.1 DEFINITIONS ZIC2410QN48: CEL s single chip /ZigBee compliant transceiver (in a QFN-48 package) ZICM2410Px-1: CEL s /ZigBee compliant transceiver module solution (containing the ZIC2410QN48) ZIC2410 daughter board: CEL s /ZigBee compliant evaluation module (containing the ZIC2410QN48) ZIC2410-EVB1: a PC evaluation board containing a ZIC2410QN48 daughter board, to connect to host programs on a PC system. Figure 29 Diagram, Connection for OTA Download 4.1 HARDWARE REQUIRED Two Evaluation Boards (any combination of ZIC2410-EVB1 s and ZICM2410-EVB2 s) with Firmware Image files already downloaded o One board flashed as a Coordinator with a unique 64-bit IEEE address assigned and a channel frequency defined. This will become the INSTALLER device. o One board flashed as any of the example applications (including as a Coordinator, excluding the BAT application) with a unique 64-bit IEEE address assigned and the same channel frequency as the INSTALLER. This will become the TARGET device. A USB cable to connect the INSTALLER device to a PC (or an Ethernet cable for an EVB1 board). This procedure will assume a USB connection. Powering capabilities for the TARGET device (USB cable, 5V Power Supply, or two 1.5V Type AA Batteries). This procedure will assume Battery powering. 4.2 OTA FUNCTIONAL PROCEDURE The OTA function of the Device-Programmer software operates as follows: 1. The INSTALLER device locates the TARGET device Over-The-Air by using its 64-bit IEEE address. 2. The INSTALLER device sends Firmware Image files to the TARGET device. 3. The TARGET device stores the data in the External Serial FLASH memory (an AT25FS010N, ATMEL SPI Flash memory on the evaluation board). 4. The INSTALLER device checks the data integrity (CRC) of what is written in the External Serial FLASH memory of the TARGET device. 5. When the data integrity check (CRC) is successful, the INSTALLER device sends a RESET command to the TARGET device. 6. When the TARGET device receives the RESET command, the data written in the External Serial FLASH memory is copied to its Internal FLASH memory and the device is re-booted. Figure 31 Diagram, OTA Operational Procedure The INSTALLER configures the RF channel The INSTALLER sends a PING with an IEEE address to search (or search for any) A TARGET responds if it receives an IEEE address equals to its own. If there is no response, the INSTALLER changes its RF channel and repeats the search operation until it is successful. The INSTALLER sends an ERASE COMMAND to erase the external flash of the remote device. The INSTALLER sends a code-image to the TARGET device. The INSTALLER sends a CRC REQUEST to read the CRC value of the TARGET device. If the CRC is equal, the INSTALLER sends a RESET. The TARGET device copies the external flash image to internal flash memory. The TARGET device restarts. Note: OTA is implemented by using a 64-bit IEEE addressing mode and IEEE MAC DATA PACKET FORMAT (uses reserved field of frame-control field in IEEE ). 4.4 DEVICE SET-UP (1) Connect the INSTALLER device to the PC using the USB cable.
