4 iii Preface TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services is a light-weight, flexible server that provides a communication layer, a service layer, and a TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R, S-PLUS, or open-source R engine pool, among other features. 7 Release Notes 2 TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services Release Notes Notable Changes and New Features The following are new features in this release. Expanded LDAP to include anonymous login for manager. Updated engine TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R 2.0. Support for two versions of open-source R: 2.15 and 3.0. Changes in Functionality No changes in functionality this release. Deprecated and Removed Features As of TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services version 6.0, Microsoft Windows XP is longer supported. Migration and Compatibility Upgrading from a previous release of Spotfire Statistics Services requires a new installation. We recommend shutting down the previous version and installing the new version in a different location. Copy any.jar files from your endorsed directory to your new installation. For most configuration and data, you can migrate from the previous installation to the new one, with the cautions and exceptions listed below. (Configuration settings are stored in TSSS_HOME/conf.) Caution Do not modify the following entries in the file conf/server.properties: service.url service.id You should not need to modify the following properties, unless you need to change them from the values you selected during installation: jmxremote.port jmxremote.password jmxremote.username The conf/database.properties and conf/ldap.properties files have changed, so do not copy older versions of these files to your new installation.

8 Release Notes 3 Specifically, the entry database.url in the file conf/database.properties should not be just copied from the older installation. Instead, change the SPSERVER_SHARE location to point to the new installation. You can find previous user data in TSSS_HOME/data/common and TSSS_HOME/data/users. You can copy these directories directly from the previous installation to the new installation. Caution All other directories under TSSS_HOME/data contain temporary data from the previous installation and should not be copied. Closed Issues TSSS-2196 When you used Jconsole to view the jobs database, you would see only the H2 default database type, rather than the database type you actually used. This problem has been fixed. TSSS-2193 In some instances, the server becomes unresponsive after many job requests. This problem has been fixed. TSSS-2180 Spotfire Local Adapter empty folders would remain on the server after it was uninstalled. This problem has been fixed. TSSS-2164 If you used Spotfire data functions with primitive R functions, Spotfire Statistics Services job would fail. This problem has been fixed. TSSS-2040 LDAP referrals were not allowed in version 5.5. This problem has been fixed. Known Issues This section lists known issues in this release. TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R Engine Can Fail on Startup on Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 If you are running TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services on Redhat Enterprise Linux 5, you can encounter a problem with the TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R engine failing on startup. This is an issue with certain versions of Java (such as version 1.7.0_25 but not on 1.7.0_40). The error is displayed as follows: # # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x ac2cbbfa5, pid=17668, tid= # # JRE version: 7.0_25-b15

9 Release Notes 4 # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (23.25-b01 mixed mode linux-amd64 compressed oops) # Problematic frame: # C [libstdc++.so.6+0xbbfa5] cxa_allocate_exception+0x55 # You can work around this problem by adding the following code to the file init.d/spserver, immediately after the first line #!/bin/sh: LD_PRELOAD=libstdc++.so.6 export LD_PRELOAD Reported Uninstallation Error Could Be Incorrect on UNIX/Linux On UNIX/Linux platforms, the uninstaller might report that some items could not be removed. Due to platform open file semantics, the installer might be able remove all files and directories, but not be able to correctly detect the removal. Manual Startup on UNIX/Linux Might be Required In some cases, the TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services installation on UNIX/Linux does not result in the service starting, even if the installer specifies startup. In this case, the server administrator can start the service manually by running the following command from the installation directory: init.d/spserver start Unicode Limitations with SAS and MATLAB Arbitrary Unicode characters in column names can be mangled by both SAS and MATLAB. If you use SAS, you can address this issue by using alphanumeric characters in the column names and using arbitrary Unicode characters in the labels associated with the columns. If you use MATLAB, note that version 7.13 allows creation and manipulation of strings with arbitrary Unicode characters; however, for structure names (used for storing column names), arbitrary Unicode characters are mangled. This is due to a limitation of MATLAB. Spotfire Statistics Services 6.0 works with Open-Source R version 2.15 and version 3.0. If you must work with a version of open-source R earlier than 2.15, use version 3.3 of Spotfire Statistics Services.) R bitness must match Spotfire Statistics Services bitness If you use 32-bit R, you must use the 32-bit version of Spotfire Statistics Services or the 32-bit version of Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter.

10 Release Notes 5 If you use 64-bit R, you must use the 64-bit version of Spotfire Statistics Services or the 64-bit version of Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter. You can run 32-bit R with 32-bit Spotfire Statistics Services on a 64-bit operating system. Note This is not a concern for the TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R engine or the S-PLUS engine, because the matched bit version of these engines ship with Spotfire Statistics Services. Memory limitations When you are running R code, you might encounter slowness or failing code because of inadequately assigned system resources. You can correct this problem by setting the following options in the file RHOME/etc/Rprofile.site on UNIX or Windows: Increase the memory limit to 4000MB by adding the following code: library(utils) memory.limit(4000) Adjust the java heap size to 2GB by adding the following code: options(java.parameters = "-Xmx2g") Adjust these settings according to your machine's capabilities. Slow at first startup Spotfire Statistics Services unpacks and deploys the statistical engines the first time the server is started. This causes longer than typical startup times on initial startup. Future restarts of the server will be much faster. Updating the spserverapi using the workbench with authentication enabled The Spotfire S+ Workbench package plugin does not support uploading or updating packages on a Spotfire Statistics Services server that has authentication enabled, according to the steps outlined in the Spotfire Statistics Services update page. See the TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services Installation and Administration Guide for information about updating packages in an authentication-enabled environment. APIs assign a default user name and password In this version of the Spotfire Statistics Services APIs, the constructors require authentication credentials to work properly. We highly recommend that you use API constructors that include the username and password arguments, even if authentication is not enabled on your server. If you use a constructor without providing username or password, the constructor provides defaults. (username is "nobody" and password is a randomly-generated unique ID.) Note that you can use the default username to call methods, such as delete or getjobs, that take username as an argument to manage users' jobs.

11 Release Notes 6 TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter When you start the Statistics Services Local Adapter, the dialog displays the Local Adapter's URL. It might take another few seconds for this URL to register. If you click the link, and you see an error, wait a few seconds and try the URL again. This issue is especially evident the first time you start it after installing it. The Spotfire Statistics Local Adapter does not support TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R. (This engine is embedded in Spotfire Professional.) In some cases, when you try to start the server process from Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter, the process does not start because no Java process is detected. You will see an error if this problem occurs. Click Start again. If you run any other process on the same port (by default, 8080), the process does not start, and you will see an error. Check that no other service is using the port you specify and try again. If you install the Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you must be logged on as an administrator. If you are not, the installation fails. In some cases, uninstalling the Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter might prompt you to restart your computer. This issue occurs if the server's Java processes are running during the uninstallation. Check the Task Manager Processes tab to make sure the Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter is not running before proceeding with uninstalling. If you cannot run calculations, but you can see the service landing page (the URL for which appears in the application's user interface), the Local Settings directory may be corrupted. Delete this directory and reinstall the Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter. (For example, on Windows XP, by default, this directory is C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\TIBCO\Spotfire Statistics Services Local Adapter\) Using style sheets for displaying job results Some browsers, such as Firefox, have problems rendering a page with a stylesheet that does not belong to the same domain. Server administrators must ensure the stylesheet is available via a URL that is always in the same domain with the server (or a cluster URL) used to service the request. Note that if users try to retrieve a list of jobs with such a browser, and they see only blank pages, they can always view the page's XML source to display valid data. 12 Release Notes 7 New Features The following are new features in this release. Expanded LDAP properties and a separated property configuration for Active Directory, as well as improved documentation, make establishing authentication easier. Engine log files now use log4j to support improved logging levels. TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R AsterDB package is included for use with TIBCO Spotfire Data Functions. (Developers using the package must have Java 6 or higher, with the JVM installed, and must set JAVA_HOME to that installation location. See the Help for more information.) Embedded Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version updated to release (update 21). Updated third-party dependencies. Changes in Functionality No changes in functionality this release. Deprecated and Removed Features As of TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services version 5.5, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 is no longer supported. After TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services version 5.5, Microsoft Windows XP will no longer be supported. Closed Issues in Spotfire Statistics Services TSSS-2152 When you had a long string as output, and you had set the logging level to debug-enabled, the job would fail. This problem has been fixed. TSSS-2109 When you called GetStringValue using the Spotfire Statistics Services API, the call would return the enum name, not its value. In this release, the API returns the enum value. TSSS-2108 The method GetFolderContents() returned a list of contents of the URL path, but the part of the URL was repeated, meaning the URL returned was incorrect. This error has been corrected. TSSS-2012 If a trailing slash (/) were supplied as part of the jobs URL, the browser

13 Release Notes 8 would append an additional jobs/ to the path, thus resulting in a broken link. This problem has been fixed. TSSS-2069 When the engine output exceeded 256k, the default H2 database would result in an error. This problem has been corrected by changing the output field type to CLOB. TSSS-1866 In the C# API, XML job serialization displayed problems when sending a function argument or returning text that included double brackets (]]). This problem has been fixed.
