3 1. Introduction These Application Notes describe the configuration of Avaya Aura Agent Desktop (Agent Desktop) with Transport Layer Security (TLS) using the default Avaya certificates or using third-party Certificate Authority (CA) signed certificates. Agent Desktop is a single-interface client application designed to operate with Avaya Aura Contact Center (AACC). Agent Desktop uses TCP protocol to interface with AACC. For customers who require secure communications, TLS can be used to secure the channel between Agent Desktop and AACC. TLS provides an extra layer on top of TCP which validates and secures communications between clients and servers. Certificates are required to validate a servers identity prior to initiating secure network transactions. Server identification certificates are either self-signed or signed by a trusted root Certification Authority. Clients are offered the servers identity certificate during initial communications; clients verify the certificate and proceed to secure the communication channel. Activating TLS on AACC requires a corresponding activation on Agent Desktop. Agent Desktop software installation uses Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 Click Once Deployment technology; the software is installed by using a web browser to retrieve software from AACC. Agent Desktop requires Microsoft Windows operating system to be installed on the target PC, together with some extra support software. If AACC is already configured to use TLS, the client web browser will require a TLS certificate to validate AACC s identity prior to Agent Desktop software download. Identity validation may be a one-way or two-way process. One-way validation occurs when the client verifies the server s identity and then both proceed to secure communications. Two-way (also known as Mutual Authentication) occurs when the server requires the client to present a certificate of identity. Currently, Agent Desktop does not offer an identity certificate and cannot be configured to perform two-way authentication.one-way authentication requires a root CA certificate to be installed on the client PC. This certificate provides verification of the AACC server s identity certificate. If default Avaya certificates are replaced with third-party certificates, both the Avaya product identification certificate and the Avaya trusted root CA certificate must be replaced. Note; servers and clients can have only one identity certificate, but may have several trusted root CA certificates. For enhanced security, only install a single trusted root CA certificate and ensure mutual authentication is activated (where possible). These Application Notes will concentrate on securing Agent Desktop with TLS and the necessary steps to activate TLS on both Agent Desktop and AACC. 3 of 32

4 2. General Test Approach and Results Prior to commencing securing of Avaya Aura Agent Desktop for TLS, Avaya Aura Contact Center must be installed and configured to use TLS. AACC has several deployment models and can also be installed as a High Availability configuration. Agent Desktop configuration is the same for all AACC installations. Agent Desktop supports various contact types; e.g., Voice, , Web Communications and Fax messages. AACC uses multiple services to handle contact types; voice contacts are handled by Communications Control toolkit (CCT) while Contact Center Multimedia (CCMM) handles all other types. All contacts are managed using the Agent Desktop toolbar; text or graphical contacts are shown in the Agent Desktop main window, while voice contacts are handled by a built in soft phone or an external telephone (connected to an external communication system which interfaces with AACC and uses CTI to control the external telephone). These Application Notes focus primarily on securing Agent Desktop communications with TLS in an AACC environment. This requires the installation of a common trusted root CA certificate in the client PC and modification of Agent Desktop configuration files. Intended users of these Applications Notes should be familiar with AAAC installation procedures and necessary operational procedures. It is desirable to carry out these changes during a maintenance window, as some procedures require restarting services and functions, which may impact service on live sites. When services may be affected, this will be highlighted in the section text describing the change Test Description and Coverage Test cases were executed to verify TLS is operational between Agent Desktop and AACC. Installation of Agent Desktop over a TLS connection. Operations to confirm Agent Desktop operation, including basic call handling and agent login/logout were performed. Associated telephone and communication system operation using TLS was not tested Test Results and Observations All test cases were successful. 4 of 32

5 3. Reference Configuration Figure 1 illustrates an example Avaya Aura Contact Center installation. In this model, three AACC components; Contact Center Manager Server (CCMS), Contact Center Manager Administration (CCMA) and Communication Control Toolkit (CCT) are installed co-resident on a single server (CCMS/CCMA & CCT #1). A fourth function, Contact Center Multimedia (CCMM #1) is installed in a separate server. AACC servers require Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 operating system. A fifth AACC component; Avaya Media Server, is also present and installed on a server running Linux operating system (Linux is required for High availability operation; otherwise AMS can be installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server or as a co-resident installation with other AACC functions). Servers enclosed in the solid box are mirrored in the dashed box, indicating this is a High Availability AACC installation. Each server has a hostname which uniquely identifies it on the network. Typically, the server identity certificate contains the hostname as the key element. Avaya Aura Agent Desktop s are configured to use TLS when communicating with AACC; Agent Desktop TLS configuration will be configured to only communicate with a server if its certificate is valid (server hostname is present in the certificate) and has not expired. 7 5. Configure Avaya Aura Agent Desktop for TLS Avaya Aura Contact Center servers are pre-configured with self-signed certificates generated during software install-time, in conjunction with a local domain controller. If these certificates are being used, validation of AACC servers by Agent Desktop will require the installation of the CCMM server certificates in the Agent Desktop client PC. If they have been replaced with certificates signed by a third-party CA server, the trusted root CA certificate will need to be installed in client PC s Obtain Default Contact CenterMultimedia Certificates using a Web Browser Using a web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer is the supported application for CCMM); enter the following url: where <FQDN_of_CCMM_server> is the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) or IP address of the CCMM server. The following page opens. Click on Continue to this website (not recommended). 7 of 32
