KEY SECURITY REQUIREMENTS for Next Generation Mobile Networks A Prevention-Oriented Approach to in Evolving Mobile Network Ecosystems
A Prevention-Oriented Approach to in Evolving Mobile Network Ecosystems RAPID GROWTH AND EVOLUTION COMPLEXITY Mobile network operators (MNOs) are evolving rapidly to deploy transformative networks G, G, SDN/NFV. Meanwhile they are battling a new and different cyber attack landscape that could compromise BOTH their networks AND their subscribers. Network and subscriber protection are no longer separate problems in this new digital age. Legacy security solutions are inadequate. Growing Threat Landscape Mobile Applications, Devices, IoT Network security architectures have evolved from a primary focus on the network perimeter and network elements. Threats to and from subscribers, applications and devices were largely not considered. Legacy security approaches are reactive where a collection of point solutions are being developed and deployed to address the latest threat. This has introduced complexity with separate and uncorrelated security solutions in place. G/ G NFV/ SDN Network Evolution A new approach to security is needed with a focus on PREVENTION not just a reaction to prior known threats. Adopting a prevention posture enables operators to get ahead of the evolving sophistication of attackers. A Next Generation Architecture focuses on BOTH networks AND subscribers this is critical to establish a prevention posture. The approach must consider the entire mobile network attack surface, which now includes the subscribers and devices. HERE ARE SIX TOP SECURITY REQUIREMENTS FOR NEXT-GENERATION NETWORKS:...PRESENT AND BEYOND
ST APPLICATION LAYER VISIBILITY ACROSS ENTIRE MOBILE ECOSYSTEM You cannot prevent what you cannot see. The overall attack surface on service provider networks and subscribers has expanded. Strong adoption of smart devices and their mobile applications have fueled the growth of the digital economy, spurred billions in mobile network investments, and provided a lucrative economy for hackers. Devices and Applications Connected devices are projected to reach the tens of billions by 00. Attackers can rapidly infect large numbers of lightly protected smart, mobile devices and IoT devices, and leverage them as botnets threatening both the mobile infrastructure and the subscriber or enterprise customer. Application Layer IPX / Roaming Evolutions to G and virtual networks (NFV/SDN) will continue to shift the distribution of traffic across multiple network environments. DNS NFV/SDN G/G Presentation Layer Session Layer Transport Layer Network Layer In order to prevent security breaches and attacks mobile network operators must establish application layer visibility across all network points, for all users and applications, in all locations, regardless of mobile network technology or form factor. Data Link Layer Physical Layer Packet Core (EPC) IoT Devices Application Layer (L7) is Key Shared and Cloud RAN
ND All Traffic CONTENT Video Text Graphics Determine if this is a legitimate user and the right content for this mobile application. Cyber threats have become increasingly sophisticated over time, perfecting techniques of attracting victims and evading detection. APPLICATIONS Mobile Apps Web Browsing VoIP SMS Cybercriminals use multiple applications types to maximizing the financial gain and have learned to mask their exploits and malicious packages to avoid detection. Botnets, malware and other attacks are increasingly exploiting the application layer (L7) with mobile application usage growing at exponential rates. In order to employ the most efficient and effective security measures that will prevent threats, mobile network operators need to ensure that all traffic can be analyzed contextually and in parallel by application, by user, and by content type. This is a much more comprehensive approach than simple port or protocol-based protection and allows mobile network operators to keep ahead of the rapid adaptability of cybercriminals. USERS Roaming Prepaid Postpaid
RD CONSISTENT SECURITY AND VISIBILITY ACROSS ENTIRE MOBILE ECOSYSTEM Provide consistent security across entire mobile ecosystem. With increased IoT device connections, converged access and shared mobile infrastructure, the overall attack surface on service provider networks has expanded. Mobile network operators need to maintain the same security efficacy across their entire network and as they migrate to virtualized and software defined architectures. Devices and Applications Cybercriminals are not bound by network interfaces, ports or protocols. They will look for any vulnerability they can exploit in the network, in end-points or in applications, and try multiple times and in multiple ways to gain access. In response, mobile network operators need to adopt a consistent and more holistic posture for security a comprehensive next generation security posture that is predicated on prevention. security efficacy is essential for adequately protecting mobile networks AND subscribers. IPX / Roaming NFV/SDN G/G Packet Core (EPC) IoT Devices A consistent, strong protection level is critical for maintaining a high quality of experience for subscribers, achieving the high efficiency levels needed for virtualized networks, and assuring the adoption and growth of new revenue generating services that are evolving with G and G. Shared and Cloud RAN DNS
TH Legacy Platform Maintain performance as security efficacy is increased. Mobile network operators need assurance that they can adequately protect their network, boosting security functions when needed, without impacting network performance or requiring continual re-engineering of security infrastructure. With legacy security architectures, there is a trade-off in performance as the number of security functions are enabled at any of the multiple enforcement points in the network, in the cloud, or at the endpoints. degrades as security efficacy is increased. Number of functions enabled Number of signatures enabled Management utilization (local logging, log forwarding, etc.) With the next generation security platform, mobile network operators can maintain high levels of performance as new security functions are enabled, achieve maximum capacity efficiencies, and minimize the over-provisioning often conducted to safeguard performance. Next-Generation Platform Number of functions enabled Number of signatures enabled Management utilization (local logging, log forwarding, etc.)
TH Legacy Architectures lead to Serialization of Manual Updates High Opex and Poor Threat Prevention capabilities Correlated security solutions decrease operational costs and improve response time. The security approach for mobile networks has remained largely unchanged through multiple generations of mobile networks, including LTE. When new threats were encountered, additional capabilities were simply added to address specific vulnerabilities in interfaces, ports or protocols, without rethinking the security approach. While each of these respective solutions helped to address certain security vulnerabilities, they were all born out of a reactive security posture and added to networks in a serial manner. Legacy Firewall IPS AV URL DNS Sandbox Port Sig Virus Web Category DNS Found Malware Platform provides more effective response and better cost efficiency. A typical mobile network operator now has a complex multitude of separate vendor solutions that are uncorrelated, with each solution addressing separate vulnerabilities and requiring separate analysis and maintenance. This is causing increased Opex for the operators along with a continued reliance on manual responsiveness to threat mitigation, poor visibility in assessing unknown threats, and an overall ineffective security posture. An integrated approach is needed to overcome these shortcomings and to provide the strong security posture and visibility needed for protection in evolving mobile networks.
TH THE SOLUTION A mobile network operator must respond immediately to unknown threats manual intervention methods are no longer viable re-programming of all security enforcement points and automated discovery and elimination of suspicious traffic ENDPOINTS New malware can spread exponentially once it is introduced. The volume and speed of cyber threats requires very fast response across the entire security infrastructure. Mobile network operators need to leverage global threat intelligence, real-time analysis, and contextual insights into threats all combined with tight integration across the entire security architecture and with a high degree of automation. Prevention Reprogramming,0 Instances 0 Instance 0 V E N TIO NETWORKS Prevention Reprogramming Rapid Spread of Malware Instances,7 Instances Detection N O C RREL CLOUD N A YS I S AL P RE THE PROBLEM 9,8 Instances IO AT N Along with all the other capabilities, this establishes the ultimate prevention posture and forms the basis of higher value prevention offerings that mobile network operators can make available to subscribers. Prevention Reprogramming PREVENTION Minutes
CONCLUSION: Adopt a Prevention Oriented Posture AUTOMATED AND INTEGRATED PREVENTION Mobile network operators need to adopt a prevention model for securing evolving mobile networks and services. As operators struggle to simultaneously add capacity, increase revenue and reduce costs, they have applied reactive measures to combat rising security threats. As a result, many mobile networks have ended up with a security posture that is not cost effective and lags behind the tremendous leaps in cybercriminal capability. Successful breaches or attacks can be prevented if application level malware is never allowed to install or execute in the first place. visibility This requires constant, application-level vigilance across the entire network combined with automated and near real-time re-programming of security enforcement points to prevent unknown threats Malware is part of the event chain in virtually every security incident. By stopping malware installation on mobile devices or disrupting its execution if already installed, mobile network operators can prevent threats to the ir subscribers and their own networks. Prevent all known threats Prevent new threats Analysis All Traffic Palo Alto Networks Next Generation Platform provides a comprehensive, cost effective solution that helps mobile network operators get ahead of the tremendous leaps in cybercriminal capability and relieve multiple, urgent mobile operator pain points. Reduce attack surface area The mission of Palo Alto Networks solutions is to prevent successful breaches.
