The RS-485 was specifically developed for industrial applications to transm it and receive data at high rates over long distances. Special c irc u itry ensures clean, reliable com m unication and suppresses com m unication line noise. This reduces overall network cost by sim p lifyin g installation and m inim izin g the num ber of cables, connectors, com m unication repeaters and filters required. Surge Protection H igh-speed transient suppressors protect the system from dangerous voltage surges or power spikes. Network Expansion The A D A M repeater s im p ly am plifie s or boosts existing signals, enabling them to travel over longer distances. Each repeater allow s you to add up to 32 A D A M units to your network, extending the network by another 4000 feet (1.2 km). Up to 256 A D A M /485, A D AM -5000E units can be connected to a single RS-485 network. Intelligent RS-485 Data Flow Control The R S-485 com m unication protocol w ill support ha lf-d uplex com m unication. O nly two w ires are needed for tra nsm itting and receiving data. Handshaking signals such as RTS (Request to Send) norm ally control the direction of the data flow. A special I/O circu it in the A D A M and A D A M senses the data flow direction and autom atically switches the tra nsm ission direction, m aking handshaking signals unnecessary. The R S-485 bus control is com pletely transparent to the user. Built-in RS-232 Communication A D A M /48 5 and AD A M -5000E system s provide up to 6 4 /1 2 8 I/O points and an RS-232 port. A host PC can be lo ca lly connected to the system to control and m onitor simple applications, thereby facilitating local troubleshooting. ASCII-based Protocol A D A M com m ands are issued in printable ASC II-based form at. A D AM applications can be w ritten in any high-level language that supports ASCII string functions, such as C, Pascal or BASIC. ASCII support means you can use v irtu a lly any com puter to manage your ADAM network. RS-232 to RS-485 Conversion R S-232 serial ports are standard w ith m ost industrial com puter system s. Though w id e ly accepted, RS-232 has lim ited tra nsm ission speed, range and netw orking capabilities. The R S-485 standard overcom es these lim itations by using differential voltage lines for data and control signals. The A D A M 's isolated converter lets you take advantage of an R S-485 on an RS-232 system by converting RS-232 signals to R S-485 signals. There is a standard RJ-45 m odular jack Ethernet port on the A D A M /T C P and A D A M L/TC P 's CPU board, and the field I/O m odules are able to link to an Ethernet network directly w ith o u t any other converter or data gateway. The com m unication speed can be auto-sw itched between 10 M bps and 100 M bps data transfer rates, depending on the network environm ent. In addition, A D A M /T C P and A D A M L/T C P can be used as an Ethernet data gateway. It provides an R S-485 interface to integrate serial devices supporting the Modbus/RTU protocol. Modbus/TCP Protocol M odbus/tc P is one of the m ost popular standards used for industrial Ethernet networks. Using th is com m unication protocol, A D A M /T C P and A D A M L/T C P is easy to integrate w ith any H M I softw are packages or user-developed a p plica tio ns w hich support M odbus. Users do not have to prepare a specific driver for the A D A M -5000/TC P and A D A M -5000L/T C P when they install the DA&C system w ith their own operating application. It reduces required engineering efforts. Moreover, A D A M /T C P and A D A M L/T C P w orks as a M odbus data server as w ell. It allow s eight PCs or tasks to access its current data sim ultaneously, no matter if they connect from LAN, an intranet, or the Internet. Hardware Capacity & Diagnostics AD A M -5000/TC P and AD A M -5000L/T C P is designed w ith high I/O capacity and supports all types of A D A M I/O m odules. Providing 8/4 slots for any mixed m odules, this DA&C system handles up to 8/4 m odules, pro vidin g 128/64 I/O po in ts points (only four A D A M s allow ed). D ifferent from other main units, the A D A M /T C P and A D A M -5000L/T C P has not on ly higher I/O capacity, but also sm arter diagnostics ability. There are eight in dicators on the fro n t case of the CPU m odule. Users can read the system status clearly, w hich includes power, CPU, Ethernet link, com m unication active, com m unication rate, etc. In addition, there are also Tx and Rx LEDs on the Ethernet port, indicating data sending and receiving. Event Handling & Data Streaming Though TCP/IP is the standard com m unication protocol for Ethernet, data transm ission management is s till a bottleneck when m any clients are on the network at the same time. Therefore, the A D A M /T C P and A D A M L/T C P also supports the UDP protocol to deal w ith regular data stream broadcasting and event/alarm trig gering. These functions w ill upgrade your system with intelligence and performance.
