5 forward Let's face it: Access to Information and Access to market intelligence are considered to be the two most pivotal issues for SME Women Entrepreneurs Development. These issues have been opined by the Women Entrepreneurs on numerous occasions and we strongly feel that it is true to some extent if not all... Research findings suggest that there is a lack of available and organized information on SME Women Entrepreneurs in Bangladesh which is backed by proper data. Against this backdrop, there is a felt demand for a publication/ database containing information on Women entrepreneurs. This publication of 'SME Women Entrepreneurs Directory' is the fulfillment of that long felt demand of the SME Entrepreneurs which SMEF has taken the first step to create a platform from where we and all other concerned could build upon and there would be ample opportunity of fine tuning. SME Foundation is working relentlessly for the development of the SME Women entrepreneurs to ensure their empowerment because we believe that empowerment holds the key to all other issues that could be resolved. This publication is an important step forward towards that cause. I am very happy to be a part of this development initiative. We at SME Foundation are always open to others and ready to listen and incorporate any constructive suggestions, ideas and incorporate them pertaining to SME development including SME Women Entrepreneurship Development. 6 acknowledgement SME Foundation (SMEF), since its inception is working for the development of SMEs in general and women entrepreneurs in particular with the mission to eradicate poverty by creating employment through entrepreneurship development in Bangladesh. Keeping this in mind SME Foundation is publishing SME Women Entrepreneurs Directory for the first time with a view to promote women entrepreneurs in SMEs. This Directory is a database of SME women entrepreneurs in business in Bangladesh. The journey to publish this directory was not very smooth. It was a mammoth task. Collection of information was the major challenge we faced in making this directory published. At the initial stage we requested numerous organizations to provide us information in a preferred format. We also published advertisements in two national daily to encourage all SME women entrepreneurs to come up with information for their inclusion in this directory. This is not a statistical source of data. The information we received from different sources, were first verified on the basis of the criteria set, and then were included in the Directory. We tried our best to include all authentic information. However, if there is any mistake or error remains, we regret for that. We will try to correct it and also wish to include more information in the next edition. This publication is a significant effort of SME Foundation focusing the business information of women entrepreneurs in 11 booster sectors with the aim to create a link between buyers and sellers. This will definitely be helpful for the buyers to reach the sellers with ease and also create opportunities for the entrepreneur s access to market and other resources within and outside this country. We are very thankful to all the individuals and the organizations especially Banks, Financial Institutes, Chamber, Associations, Trade bodies, Deputy Commissioners Office and Women Associations who helped us by sending required information/ data in the stipulated time. 7 at a glance Introduction of SME Foundation SMEs are recognized as engine of economic growth and employment generation for sustainable industrialization in both developed and developing countries of the world. In context of Bangladesh, there is no alternative of small and medium enterprises for rapid industrialization and national economic growth through lower capital investment and employment generation. The SME Foundation is playing its role in helping the SME entrepreneurs including the women entrepreneurs by conducting various programs with an aim to develop the SMEs of Bangladesh. One of the major aims of SMEF is to bring the grassroots entrepreneurs into the main stream of economic development through employment generation, reduction of social discrimination and poverty alleviation. Legal base Small and Medium Enterprise Foundation got registration from the Ministry of Commerce on and from the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms on under the Companies Act (Act XXVIII), A resolution (Gazette notification) was circulated on regarding the establishment of SME Foundation. It is an independent and unique not for profit organization. Vision Promote Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for alleviating poverty, generating employment and thereby accelerating economic growth. Mission Assist for promoting the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises of all the productive and service-oriented enterprises of the national economy for facing the challenges of free market economy and globalization.

8 Objectives 1. To implement SME Policy Strategy adopted by the Government of Bangladesh. 2. To recommend SME friendly policies to different government ministries and agencies. 3. To provide business support services to the SME entrepreneurs. 4. To promote, support, strengthen and encourage the growth and developmentof SMEs in all productive sectors of the economy, including the service sector, throughout the country. 5. To institute SME Awards in order to promote competitiveness among the SMEs. 6. To create a database and provide all needed information about SMEs to investors and service providers. 7. To encourage, promote and assist efforts in poverty alleviation through SME development with focus on injecting new technologies and ideas, and generate, disseminate and promote application of appropriate technologies relevant to employment creation and poverty alleviation. 8. To enhance productivity, promote quality and viability of SMEs by designing programs for capacity building and facilitating service provision by contracting out to the provate sector. 9. To conduct sectoral study to ensure availability of latest information, identify challenges and recommend preventing measures. 10. To operate credit wholesaling programs for the SMEs through different banking and non-banking financial institutions. 11. To conduct training programs to create skilled manpower for different SME sub-sector based on their demands. 12. To bring women entrepreneurs into the mainstream of development and helping them to achieve economic self dependency. 13. To train up and motivate SMEs in using ICT tools for higher productivity and improving quality. 5
