1 Near Field Imaging (NFI) Projected Capacitive Touch Screen Systems Read and understand all safety information contained in this document before using this product.

2 Introduction This is intended to help you to quickly set up a MicroTouch TM Near Field Imaging (NFI) Demo Kit so that you can get on with evaluating Near Field Imaging touch technology for your application. The Demo Kit comes with the items shown below: NFI touch screen RS-232 power/ communications cable Disk with touch screen linearization file(s) NFI Controller Page 2 of 18

3 1.0 Remove the touch screen from its packaging and place it on a non-conductive surface with the front of the screen facing up. Identifying the front of the touch screen The front of the touch screen is facing up when the barcode label on the touch screen is facing up and is readable. 4 2.0 Remove the controller from its ESD-protected envelope and place it on a non-conductive surface with the major electronic components facing up. Controller Non-conductive material (e.g., ESD-protected envelope) Do not touch shields with grounding wire. They are not grounded. If shields touch grounded metal work, the controller will malfunction. Page 4 of 18

5 3.0 Use two fingers to gently pull out the retaining clip until it protrudes slightly from the controller s connector. To protect the retaining clip from damage, do not remove it completely. Page 5 of 18

6 4.0 With the tail s conductive side (the shiny side) facing up, insert the tail between the retaining clip and the controller s connector. Connector Conductive side (shiny side) Tail Retaining clip Conductive (shiny) side of tail facing up Page 6 of 18

7 5.0 With a finger on each side of the retaining clip, push it until it fits snugly inside the connector. Page 7 of 18

8 6.0 Connect the grounding cable of the RS-232 power/communications cable to the grounding screw hole of the controller. Use the grounding screw, lock washer, and nut in the Demo Kit. 9 7.0 Connect the female 8-pin connector of the RS-232 power/communications cable to the controller. Grounding cable Female 8-pin connector Page 9 of 18

10 8.0 Connect the DB-9 connector of the RS-232 cable to the RS-232 port on host computer. RS-232 port of host computer DB-9 connector Page 10 of 18

11 9.0 Connect the DIN connector on the RS-232 cable to the DIN connector of a 5-volt grounded power supply. To controller DIN connector on RS-232 cable Grounded power supply (5 volt) (not included) Page 11 of 18

12 10.0 Connect the power supply to a suitable power source. Do not touch the touch screen while connecting power. When you apply power to the controller, it begins to initialize itself. If you touch the screen while the controller is initializing, you will interfere with the initialization and may cause the controller to register an error. Page 12 of 18

13 11.0 When the green heartbeat/communication LED (DS1) is blinking, the controller is ready. Unreadable touch (DS3) Valid touch (DS2) Heartbeat/communication (DS1) Error condition (DS4) When power is applied to the controller, all of the LED status lights on the controller will illuminate briefly. If all of the LEDs remain lit for an extended time, disconnect and then reconnect power. 14 12.0 Install software. For the host computer to recognize the NFI touch screen, you will need to install NFI touch screen driver software. Follow these steps: 12.1 Download the driver appropriate for your operating system from to a folder you create on your hard drive (e.g., c:\nfi) Close all open Windows programs Unzip the downloaded file into the folder you created, find the executable file in the folder (SETUP.EXE for Windows XP/2000/NT; INSTALL.EXE for Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS) and then run (doubleclick) the executable file Follow the on-screen instructions. 15 Troubleshooting To troubleshoot problems, refer to the MicroTouch NFI Integration Guide and the MicroTouch NFI Software User s Guide for your operating system. Uninstalling software To uninstall the software, refer to the procedures described in the NFI Software User s Guide for your operating system. 16 Intended Use The MicroTouch TM Near Field Imaging (NFI) touch screen system is composed of components for incorporation in electrical or electronic apparatus, equipment or installations. The touch screen system has been tested on integrated samples of touch screens and (NFI-3) controllers show compatibility for use in products requiring CE compliance under the following directives: the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC, the Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC, and the Machinery Directive 98/37/EEC (formerly 89/392/EEC). Caution: Changes or modifications to this equipment not expressly approved by the manufacturer could void the user s authority to operate this equipment.the manufacturer of the end apparatus will, under their responsibility, comply with the applicable Directives in design and construction. The NFI touch screen system is a UL Recognized Component. It has been evaluated to CAN/CSA-C22.2 No /UL for use only with a power supply marked Class 2, Limited Power Source (LPS). It is the responsibility of the manufacturer using this component to ensure safety compliance of the end-use product. Install this product and its wiring according to UL/CSA or applicable standards. This product is intended to be connected to a power supply marked Class 2, Limited Power Source (LPS). Interconnecting cable should be R/C (AVLV2), maximum 3.05 m, marked VW-1 or FT-1 or equivalent. To ensure safety compliance of the end-use product, install this product and its wiring according to the spacings and general practices for SELV circuits in UL/CSA or applicable standard. Safety Notices WARNING To reduce the risks associated with electrical shock or mechanical function which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury and/or property damage: Do not use a power cable that is damaged or frayed or a power plug that is damaged. Do not use a damaged power supply. Handle the power supply with care. Do not service the NFI touch screen system. There no user serviceable parts. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. CAUTION To reduce the risks associated with glass breakage which may result in minor or moderate cut-related injury, handle a touch screen with care to avoid breaking the glass. Be aware of broken touch screens with sharp edges. CAUTION To reduce the risks associated with environmental contamination which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury and/or cause property damage, dispose of components in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
